Alan Wake 2: Lack Of Sales Update Suggests It Didn’t Sell Too Well

I regretted not listening to players about Death Stranding. I won't make the same mistake with this game. I've read many comments about it being boring, so I think I'll wait for it to come to Gamepass.
Death Stranding was amazing what you talking about.

this game had the most anemic pre-release marketing strategy I've ever seen.

it felt like it was accidently announced then just a couple months later just showed up in digital stores.

I’m a big fan of this franchise. But, the first game did not sell well, particularly because it launched at the same time as a RockStar game. The game was great though. The second game, they make most of the promotional material focus more of the detective lady than the actual main character. It makes no sense.

I think one of my biggest complaints is that it all feel so mundane and they pretty much ignore stuff from the first game and American Nightmare. Sam Lake even admitted he forgot a lot of stuff about the first two games and uses Wikipedia to try to keep everything consistent.

A good example for me is how they mention alien intelligences and lovecraftian beings that supposedly dwell in the Dark Place in the first two games. There's no weird creatures or no appearances by any kind of lovecraftian type being and instead it's just a bunch of shadows. I guess you could count the Dark Presence that only shows up a couple times as one of these beings but all it shows up as is a warp in the air.

They had a chance to really do something interesting with the game and instead pretty much ignore the really interesting parts of the first two games.

This is the karma they get for reselling Control 60fps next gen patch for the price of a new indie game. Not even a discount for previous owners was offered. I had to wait until it was on sale. Now I own Control digitally and physically. Yeah, this time I'll wait until this goes on a deep sale and releases with all of the DLC and patches.

The first Alan Wake didn't do well either. It was beloved and adored by us fans, but it took a long time to break 1 million (after many discounts). Control wasn't a huge hit either. Remedy make quirky and unique games that don't appeal to the masses. So while I'm disappointed it apparently didn't do well, I'm not shocked. I hope the attention from TGA may help a bit and that we'll get some positive news soon. The game deserves to be played.

No physical, EGS, lovely trend of replacing protagonists in their own games, extremely questionable gameplay..

Recipe-for-Success.png

It at least exposed an awful lot of frauds/hypocrites who entirely change their tastes/standards/videogame priorities based on hosting platforms.

They should've added lots of quick time events, the simple PlayStation folk like those.
Let me take the emotional derailing bait on behalf of all PS bros.. "QTE" wouldn't help when simple PlayStation folk's woke walking simulators play like this.

Maybe Remedy should have put more of what made them famous in this industry in their latest game.

To be fair, 505 Games were the ones who took that decision not Remedy.
Same thing with AW2 physical edition, that was up to Epic not Remedy.

There are a culmination of reasons why this didn't do well commercially.

- Sandwiched among high profile IP's, specifically Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Assassin's Creed Mirage and Forza, to hit deadlines probably set by EPIC to release during the halloween timeframe thinking it would be a great PR move to maximize revenue. There's a reason why Alone in the Dark was postponed. They're not stupid.

- No physical console release or a pc steam release, means a death sentence, to a niche IP like this one.

- Very minimal PR. Understandable that EPIC's footing the bill. They only care about recouping the cost of devices, and the console initial sales will do that for them. They don't give a crap about later sales as it's already EGS exclusive on pc.

- The game is visually phenomenal, but their previous outing, Control, is not that far off. They could have tried and squeezed in a PS4/Xbox One port if they tried, but again that's more work and deadlines strike again. Also, Control was an absolute shitshow on lastgen consoles, at launch. Playable, post patches later. Outsourcing is a gamble until you know the team well enough.

- Relying on 3rd party publishers like EPIC, will always bring in bad PR and loss of freedom. Remedy are too big of an "indie", in 2023, to not self-publish their games. Believe in your work more than external investors, for once, maybe?

Those are some things on the top of my head when thinking why this game underperformed.

The detective lady is the main character. Alan Wake was just a minor supporting character.

Sam Lake has dementia? How do you forget the script for your own game. I mean it is not THAT old.

People wanna beat their back catalog first, they have a choice, it's obvious, it's too early to jump to conclusion.

Don't think I've heard anything more disrespectful towards RE fans.
RE games actually got gameplay
This battle is getting dumb but I'll join in. For some reason when I was playing Alan Wake 2 I couldn't put it down. Now I'm trying to play through the RE4R after never playing the original and I'm super bored.

People have opinions man

of course is not going to stick because a "sony game" means the highest production values and polish in the biz.

only salty and ignorant boys will used it as some kind of pejorative that tries to imply that a sony game is not a real game.

I thought it just meant you look at the character's back most the time.

Epic fucking funded the game, of course it was gonna be exclusive to the EGS. I don't know why people are still going "they should have put it in Steam etc".

About the physical release I don't understand why they did it, to be honest I don't care because I'm all digital but some others rightly do so that one is on Remedy/Epic.

They have an upto 50/50 split on revenue with Epic Games Publishing and the development costs have already been fully covered.
Alan Wake 2 being a benchmark game it is highly highly unlikely to flop.....noting that success/flop for this title likely doesnt match what SquareEnix execs would call a success/flop.
But I was told this game wouldn’t flop, lol.

Economy sucks balls, I'd buy it next month just to support them but I have way too many games to play and so little time to complete them.

Y'all know the saying: "go EPIC, go broke"

But seriously, the EPIC deal probably fucked them. They helped developing AW 2, sure. But at the same time, they couldnt release physical copies probably due to an agreement with EPIC, and no Steam release.

I've never seen Epic releasing physical games before (corret me if I'm wrong). And they've probably prohibited Remedy to seek another publisher.

They made a deal with the devil to make this game happen, unfortunately
Alan Wake Remastered was also published by Epic and it got a retail release on day1.

Also if it wasn't for Epic's funding Alan Wake 2 would never see the light of day, because it was a very risky project in terms of needed funding and (lack of) potential sales. You can hate them along with their exclusivity deals, but they still made the sequel happen.

My game of the year. I feel like Steam and a physical release definitley would have helped it. Not many people like the Epic store and buying digital on Xbox or Playstation means you never really own the game.

If I can't buy it on Steam first (or if it's a half-assed port) then i'll buy the physical disc for consoles. It will probably be locked to EGS since they backed it, but that store isnt going to be around forever since it's not profitable. And if we're not getting a physical release then I'll wait for it to hit gamepass.

RE3 Remake and RE4, for sure. RE2 Remake? Alan Wake has a dodge, a mechanic to remove armor, and fast enemies. Wake has better gameplay than RE 2 Remake. Did you even play it?

This game has more walking and talking in its first two hours than the entire RE franchise.

Personally, RE games are my favourites these days together with From's, and I got bored of AW2 a few hours in.

You bought it and only played a few hours? Or maybe you watched a stream and pretending that you bought and played it. You're missing out if so, also what a waste of money, lol! The newer RE games(7&8) are really slow in some parts with long cut scenes. Maybe you're only talking about the Remakes.

A good, complex story to much for you? AW2 puts Resident Evil to shame. This coming from a lifelong RE fan.

It’ll do fine like Control over the long run. It’s not for everybody but it’s an incredibly well produced game with some of the best visuals I have ever experienced. The writing is.. fine.. but it works.

It reminds me of the Silent Hill games more than anything else. I’d certainly rather play AW2 than dogshit games like RE5/6/RE3R/Village.

Lack of disc release hurt the sales perhaps? Didn't see AW2 pulling off a BG3 in sales (BG3 was a digital-only release across PC and PS5)
Considering Epic funded the game with exclusivity fees of some kind, Remedy probably doesnt care about unit sales. As long as they get marketing/funding to cover costs they are happy. Their game library has a history of hardware platform and e-store exclusivity deals. Being digital only is another limitation on their end, but they dont seem to care about releasing games holistically for everyone.

They know their games have limited appeal and sales, so it's too risky to release them on their own hoping for big sales the traditional way going disc and digital across every key platform at the same time.

BG is different IMO. Even though the last BG game came out 25 years ago (not including those Diablo-ish spin off games), it's still got a legacy across RPG gamers. On the other hand, there is no way the average modern day gamer thinks Alan Wake 1 is such a fantastic game, everyone would be stampeding to buy AW2 no matter how good the reviews are.

What sucks about this is that I'm in the middle of the game right now and it's the best game I've played this fall so far. Spider-man 2, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Super Mario RPG, I found to be all lacking big time this fall. Had no expectations for Alan Wake 2 cuz I didn't like the first one, but I loved Control, so I felt I had to check this out, and I'm super into what it's doing. Spider-man 2 is gonna sell millions just for the character and it's not even half as good of a game Alan Wake 2 has been so far.

Thats the power of branding. Superman 64 is always on any site's worst games list. It sold around 1M units, which at that time was pretty good considering the N64 user base count.

I don't think they thought it would be a commercial success, I hope it made money for them. Personally I thought the first game was mid, didn't get the hype.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
This is not funny at all , this is actually sad

We are going to get the same shitty blurprint games in the future
