Destin Legarie: Xbox Buying Activision Was Pointless

Summary:
The video expresses Destin's disappointment with Microsoft's lackluster approach to integrating Activision Blizzard's games into the Xbox ecosystem. Here's a breakdown:

Destin's Expectations:

  • Game Pass Benefits: Access to new Activision games and a revitalized Xbox Game Pass library.
  • Promotion and Fanfare: More promotion for Activision games and a larger push for the Xbox Game Pass.
Current Reality:

  • Limited Integration: Limited additions of games to Game Pass with minimal promotion (e.g., Diablo 4, Call of Duty).
  • Backwards Compatibility Issues: Existing Activision games not available on backwards compatible consoles (e.g., Prototype).
  • World of Warcraft Exclusion: No mention of bringing World of Warcraft to Xbox or Game Pass despite its popularity and potential.
Destin's Concerns:

  • Missed Opportunities: Xbox squandering the potential of the Activision library by not actively promoting and integrating it.
  • Limited Game Pass Value: Limited incentives for Xbox players and a lack of engagement with the Activision games.
  • Lack of Strategy: Uncertainty about Microsoft's future plans for the Activision acquisition.
Destin's Suggestions:

  • Game Pass Bundles: Promote bundles of classic Call of Duty games on Game Pass.
  • World of Warcraft Integration: Offer World of Warcraft access on Xbox or a special promotion on Game Pass.
  • Backwards Compatibility: Make Activision's classic games backward compatible on Xbox consoles.

How the hell WoW would work on consoles? All the acquisition did was ending the console wars sooner rather than later. MS is now scrambling to make back all that capital that was used to acquire Activision bringing everything to PlayStation. The guys at Sony probably couldn’t be happier.

After the acquisition, Xbox put more XGS games on PlayStation than they put Activision games on Game Pass for Xbox users. lol

You can probably count the older 360 CoDs out, they are rampant with hackers still to this day and some games have hacks that can destroy your account. It would be compromising to do it on their behalf and there is no way to fix it unless they updated all the older CoDs. Baring in mind BO6 is full of hackers and they haven't a clue how to stop that i wouldn't count on it.

It really wasn't, they understand that at some point owning the big IPs is going to be really important in the digital locker & subscription era.

I think Xbox dropped the ball all the way to the center of the earth in general.

Having said that. I don't think it was pointless. Xbox had a content problem. ABK mostly solved that for them.

They can throw everything ABK has ever made onto Gamepass. Technical/logistic issues aside, THAT would be pointless. They need a way to monetize that content. Just throwing old CoD games on Gamepass will take time/money, and if that doesn't move the needle in Gamepass revenue then what's the point?

The ABK acquisition will take time to fully integrate within Microsoft. ABK was a massive organization.

Now, do I think Microsoft will successfully deliver on what they need to here? Absolutely not. Nothing in the history of Xbox tells me they're going to be successful here. But it's far too early to call it pointless.

I'm so glad GP money is not going towards anything related to WoW.

As for Activision, I don't play much of their stuff. I already got 2 new Call of Duty games, THPS coming soon, and some old Crash games so I would have to lie to say I saw nothing from it.

It's primarily about boosting revenue though, and it's a good thing they did do it. I think every Xbox Studio would be shuttered at this point if they didn't. It bought them a ton of time to try and transition out of being a 1st party / console. They're now the biggest publisher in gaming, and this is the whole reason they're able to transition out relatively painlessly. So I think he's just wrong.

I do wish they'd get access to some of the older shit and upload it again, like Tenchu and some of the licensed games, but I'm sure that will take a while and cost money. THPS 1+2 was added to PS+ in 2022 and I do wonder if they signed something blocking it from GP since 3+4 are coming day 1.

Lol maybe he should have asked Spencer about that when he had an interview with him like 2 weeks ago.

He expects WOW free with GP sub. lol

So if a telcom company bought another telcom company, and someone had sub services with each company, he'd expect everyone in this situation to get the sub plans from the bought out company to be free.

What a retard.

Well StarCraft 3 will never happen. Theres no one there anymore who even knows how to do RTS. Just read Jason Schreir’s book. They tried to get one off the ground but couldn’t convince management to greenlight. All we know is there’s a chance of a Ghost-like FPS StarCraft game but it certainly wouldn’t be an RTS.

Pushing WoW on Xbox could've been an amazing idea... 20 years ago. I also think maybe something like SWTOR would've been an incredible move, when that released. Star Wars was at the time was still massive, it was a sequel to the cult classic KoTor games, that were exclusively on Xbox Console, and PC.

It's not pointless at all when you realise that Microsoft are inevitably going fully third party.

If you earnestly believed that Microsoft were trying to 'save' Xbox with the purchase, then maybe.

What an idiot!

Sorry, but you don't need a degree in economics to see why sacrificing multiple revenue streams to prop up an existing one's growth is not a viable business proposition.

The only way you could believe such an approach would be realistic is if your thinking was entirely centred upon damaging the opposition regardless of impact to one's own bottom-line. Which is fanboy thinking, not business.

They can spin it however they want, but the reason all these Xbox fanboys wanted Activision was for Xbox to dominate or kill PlayStation.

These guys aren't upset about GamePass or even Microsoft's profits. They're upset those games aren't exclusive to Xbox, like they swore for years was the only reason Microsoft was buying them. "You don't spend 70 billion on Activision and keep the games on PlayStation".

They're also realizing buying Activision has led to Microsoft putting all their games on PlayStation. I don't care how much they claim otherwise, but they HATE that.

Fact of the matter is that Microsoft hasn't been nearly as quick to put ABK games on Game Pass as they were with Bethesda. There's probably good reason for that.
They are never going to put the old classic cod titles on gamepass because they would split a good chunk of the player base from their newest title and lose money from them not buying micro transactions since the older titles don't have them.
