[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] "Donkey Kong Returns HD" tops the charts with over 100,000 units sold! "Dynasty Warriors: Origins" and "Tales of Graces F Remaster" also make the top 10 [1/13-1/19]

Sales rankings announced by Famitsu. Here is a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for video games and hardware from January 13th to January 19th, 2025 in Japan.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, an HD remaster of the title released for the Wii in 2010 is doing well. It has sold over 100,000 units and took the top spot. It also includes additional levels from the Nintendo 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D released in 2013, making it an extremely satisfying game to play and we can expect continued sales in the future.

Coming in second is Dynasty Warriors ORIGINS while in third and fifth place are the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 versions of Tales of Graces F Remaster. The former is the latest installment in the Dynasty Warriors series known for its exhilarating action. It is an ambitious title that aims to return to its roots and allow players to enjoy more strategic battles than ever before. The latter is a remaster of the RPG released on the PlayStation 3 in 2010, both versions have sold a total of 41,370 units making for a solid start.

Also ranked in 10th is SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada DELUXE EDITION, a survival TPS game in which players pilot a bipedal mech to explore and fight, meaning that five of the top 10 spots are taken by titles making their first appearance.

The Switch is UP YoY despite the Switch 2 announcement, DKHD over 100K wasn’t expected (Better than Tropical Freeze 96K), and the PS5Pro is now below the PS4Pro launch aligned (139,902 vs 145,937 MC)
yeah, but there is no release date in horizon, the buyer might buy NSW1 first for now.

I asked last week how it would effect sales, going up YOY was not in my thoughts at the time :messenger_hushed:

I had my doubt Donkey Kong Returns would reach number one but here we are.

The biggest competitor for the Switch 2 in Japan is going to be the Switch 1, If Nintendo drop the price for the Switch 1 it’s going to be an epic battle.
Thankfully for buyers all the software should transfer over once they are ready to upgrade.

100+k for DK isn't good though, it's more expensive than when it originally came out and Nintendo seem to know they can keep doing this.

Good week. Much better than expected for DK, which bodes well for a brand new game and not a minimum effort remaster.

Tales and DW:O also did decently, and the latter had good word of mouth which should affect legs.

Looks like the switch 2 announcement didn’t really tank switch 1 sales this week, another week of doing great. PS5 err lol well it’s something I guess, plus three whole new releases too talk about spoilt for choice.

As much as people online shitting on DK it sold more in a single week than astrobot has done since launch. Not bad for a “shitty” overpriced DK 3DS remaster with terrible graphics. It’s almost like people care about fun over pretty graphics.

And before the cryhards come in I don’t wanna hear about digital. This thread is for stuff you pick up in stores. Something that’s conveniently forgotten again & again.

Maybe sony price gouging japan isn’t the best idea if you want to increase your userbase. The sales show it’s having a negative effect. Sony treats Japanese gamers like some loyal diehard cash cow to milk to make up for western Sony’s fuckups like crapcord.

Astro Bot seens to be very fun though. Its sales have nothing to do with graphics vs. fun.

And you might not want to hear about digital but it does change sales figures (though I agree DK will still be ahead than Astro Bot overall).

Definitely, it’s going to be interesting to see how Nintendo will manages both systems. My impression is that a lot of people expect Switch 1 sales to just fall off a cliff post Switch 2, which I think is pretty unlikely.

I’m just hoping they provide both a steady stream of exclusive Switch 2 software alongside the cross-gen stuff like Metroid Prime 4, Xenoblade X etc.

Dishing the Lite model and the OG Switch and dropping the Oled model to $249.99 could work great.

Looking at these numbers…. they’re not gonna make the first version of Switch 2 OLED, are they?
I’d be surprised if they did, unless OLED has become cheap as lcd as Nintendo don’t usually slap in expensive components hence the price bump between vanilla and OLED switch 1.

My guess will be lcd on release then a slightly refined upgrade a bit later. I’m still curious about battery life as my OLED gets approx 6-7 hours on one charge depending if I’m using WiFi or not. Bigger screen in switch 2 is going to pull more power for sure.

Wow, I am very surprised the second remaster of Donkey Kong Returns with basically no additions to it (unless I missed them) sold this well. While that game is great, I don't want this to set a precedent of remastering already remastered games for full price, because I am not buying into that.

it does have the extra 3DS levels.

Which is fine, but its still a $60 remaster of a remastered game. I have no qualms with a remaster (once) of an old game, but this is something different and I want no part of it. Guess we will see how it does long term, but this is more than I expected to see it sell.

Tbf Switch 2 isn't out yet. I'm pretty sure things will look very different once Switch 2 and MK9 drop
For sure, I should’ve edited in the announcement trailer or something instead I guess.

When Switch 2 is actually out I expect it to pretty much obliterate Switch (1) from there on out in terms of hardware sales.

The 3DS version was a port, this is a remaster. So this is the first remaster of an old game.

The last two big DQ spinoffs were Switch exclusives, and it's the main platform for HD 2D games. So it isn't that surprising I would say .

I'm putting here the top digital PS5 games and their last known etail sales, to see how they compare:

FFVII Rebirth - 339,168

Dragon Quest III - 243,003

Dragons Dogma 2 - 83,751

Rise of the Ronin - 128,110

Palworld -

Like a Dragon 8 - 138,411

CoD: Black Ops 6 - 46,992

Stellar Blade - 132,647

Granblue Fantasy Relink - 63,121

Black Myth: Wukong

Unsurprisingly it looks like COD has quite a high digital ratio, which is common for online multiplayer games. DD2 seems to have had a big digital ratio at launch, but then no legs.

I'll update when we get the Famitu top 100. And I can do further analysis of anyone is interested.

It's a (old school) JRPG, in Japan. It was always destined to perform much much better on the portable hybrid system.
