[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] Touhou rhythm game "Touhou Danmaku Kagura Fantasia Lost" takes the top spot! "Astro Bot" and "Ace Attorney Investigations 1 & 2 Mitsurugi Selection" also off to a good start [9/2-9/8]​


Sales rankings announced by Famitsu. Here is a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for video games and hardware from September 2nd to September 8th, 2024.

This week's rankings have titles making their first appearance in the top three. Taking the top spot is Touhou Danmaku Kagura Fantasia Lost, it is an officially authorized derivative rhythm action game of the Touhou Project and many additional music packs are currently available.

In addition, free downloadable content is scheduled to be released at a later date, so we can look forward to future sales.

Coming in second place is Astro Bot, this is a completely new game developed as a full-sized game based on the 3D action game ASTRO's PLAYROOM that comes pre-installed on the PlayStation 5. It got off to a good start with over 10,000 units sold.

Coming in third is Ace Attorney Investigations 1 & 2: Mitsurugi Selection, this is a detective adventure game in which you play as Mitsurugi Reiji, a prosecutor from the Ace Attorney series and uncovers the truth behind the incident. It includes both games in the series and adds many new features and elements that were not in the original version, making it a true definitive edition and it is also selling well.

I genuinely thought Astro would be at number 1 this week. It’s a joke that Sony thought to only ship that many copies of a game that got a good chance of expanding the ps5 user base over there, man talk about fucking it up.

That hardware drop is either people holding out for the PayStation 5 pro or people have finally had enough.

But I'll bite. This is over a week and only in Japan, being in the tens of thousands is a good thing. Not to mention it sold out.

My question is, if you do actually want to see it fail, why?
Stellar blade have been sold 4 times more and it reach 1M in two months lol
Maybe just not the right target audience tho

Hope those price increases were worth it.

Switch 2 will bury PS5 in Japan for good.
Remember a good chunck of PS5's was doing solely for importing out
1. Japanese Yen was devalued for good chunck,making it a perfect price to import be price hike
2. Japanese PS5 isn't region locked at all the only thing need to worry about is warranty

This means that unless they were selling the console at a loss and they wanted to get rid of these losses at all costs, it was a wrong move that did more harm then benefit.
They will be forced to backtrack in a few months.

PC actually started to gain more popularity in Japan, the steam count has rise up 60% last year.

Even the Japanese retailers are using PS5 Pro price increase to advertise PC now. Literally hijack the PS5pro hashtag to sell their PCs

As seen above, Applied (a major PC retailer with stores across Japan) even put out advertisements for gaming PCs using the hashtag #PS5 Pro, taking a direct jab at Sony with their 119,800-yen-deals.

Other Japanese PC manufacturers have been showing off their gaming PCs in the 120,000-yen range in similar ways, such as by updating their guides on how to choose a gaming PC in a bid to attract new users.


For example, Applied, a company with a well-known red logo and physical stores in the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions, posted on its official X account on the day of the PS5 Pro announcement, "We have a gaming PC for 119,800 yen." It's clear that they're aiming for it, as they also have the hashtag "#PS5pro."

In addition, Tsukumo, known for its green logo and especially in Akihabara, quoted their own product announcement posted in late August in the same price range, emphasizing "120,000 yen," "130,000 yen," and so on. Mouse Computer also updated its advice on choosing a PC, and other companies have made some kind of move.

It's not a matter of care, it's a matter of financials which is what they get.
The move has sense only if they knew they were losing money at the previous price point and now at the new price they're profitable. In this case they made a choice, profits instead of sales.
But if the console was already sold at a small profit overall, the sales decrease far surpassed the extra margin which is a miscalculation on their part and it's just a damage for no benefit.
In this case they'll backtrack or suddenly they'll make continuous promotions.

Imo in general they're not understanding that without more affordable prices and promotions their 18m target will be a dream this year.

Damn, Touhou domination.
Astro Bot did as expected based on the available stock, hoping for great legs going forward thanks to word of mouth. Even Install Base is positive about it.
I hate the dumbheads at Sony Group, tho.

IIRC Astro Bot is supply-limited in Japan right? So the physical sales are more representative of a supply constraint, not a demand one. Though it's idiotic SIE did not provide enough copies for Japan of all markets for a game like Astro Bot. One of the few 1P they've put out this gen that is a no-brainer there and they gimped the supply. No foresight whatsoever.

Meanwhile those PS5 hardware sales are painful. Down by 2/3 the previous week. There's a chance the new weeklies could be even lower, I'm talking like 8K-ish here. Sometime during the next six months the PS5's LTD should definitely end up tracking behind PS4's if it hasn't started already (I'd have to take another look at LTDs launch-aligned to know, help me Luminoth-4545 Luminoth-4545 !), and the Pro sure as hell isn't going to help.

Honestly without a price cut and more software that helps in the market like Astro Bot or Rise of the Ronin, I don't know how SIE salvages the PS5's sales situation in Japan. At best they tie with PS4, but it's very possible total LTDs in Japan come in under PS4, let alone PS3. And of course none of that bodes well for PS6. Switch is still going strong in the region and Switch 2 should have more than enough value proposition (even if it comes in slightly higher in price than the Switch did) to maintain or even grow its market in the country. In fact Switch 2 could probably clean PS5's clock a good bit in many global markets, including those in Europe, though I'd expect the US to be a lot more contentious and PS5 still maintaining a lead, if less so over Switch 2 than it has over Xbox.

We don't have digital, but I think if it had done well we would see a bigger hardware increase.

Although we don't have the specific data, I'm gonna guess Astro Bot probably didn't set Japan on fire at this juncture..

Looks like you were 100% spot on Woopah Woopah about the Astro Bot being supply limited. Only 12.6k physical copies sold.

But woof, that PS5 nosed dive in sales after the recent price increase.
Probably would be top spot with more stock. Let's see its legs next week.

Is it time to discontinue the original switch and just go forward with Lite/OLED in Japan?
I don't see much benefit in that.

Original Switch outsold the Lite last year, but then momentum between them changed when Nintendo launched a new Animal Crossing Lite bundle.

Momentum might change again with the new Switch bundles that are coming.

Currently the PS5 is 300,391 ahead launch aligned.

But that's about to close as, launch aligned, PS4 just entered the holiday period. Next week is PS5's 201st week, and in its 201st week the PS4 sold 70,581. PS5 ain't doing that next week.

Whew, well it was fun while it lasted. Still kind of crazy to me they're basically giving up the Japanese market. They must be counting on growth in markets like Korea & China to make up the difference.

We'll see how well that plays out for them.

I'm sure it's going to sell well everywhere else.
12k in Japan is a flop

It debuted 2nd in UK with digital included after Dring initially said it underperformed in physical next to Rift Apart.

Plus we already know Astro Bot was supply-constrained in physical copies for Japan. Stupid as that may be, it was the case.

So chances are high, it's selling well even in Japan, let alone other markets. It's just that a lot of the sales are probably digital.

Don't they usually go by preorders?
If the preorders were low they're not gonna ship a lot of extra copies.
Hope it picks up for them, i didn't buy Astrobot but Sony needs these kind of games, not everything needs to be storydriven.

Maybe, but they should trust more in their product, 12K is really low for a first shipment and Japan people loves go to store on launch date. Also the second hand market is big in Japan for single player games, that could affect second week numbers. They lost a great opportunity with this game due they incompetence to understand the Japan market… Or maybe the game really flop in Japan.

Sony should have taken a hit on margins. If it gets under 10k is alarm bells going to ring? or are they just giving up on Japan?

If you can't sell hardware, well then you won't sell software.

So much for the xbox bump. Plus these numbers are for Astro Bot are basically pointless to me without digital at this point. The game has been top 5-top 10 since it released over there. Those PS5 sales though;(

Astro bot had a 45%-55% physical to digital split in the UK, if it's digital sales percentage is the same here then it's under 30K which is really actually quite good I think
