Famitsu Sales: Week 8, 2025 ( Feb 17 - Feb 23)

EWTXHET.jpeg

[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] "Yakuza 8 Gaiden" tops the charts with 100,000 units sold! "It Takes Two," a new game from the same development studio that will be released next week, also makes it into the top 10 [2/17-2/23]

Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. This time we bring you a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from February 17th to February 23rd, 2025 in Japan.

The action adventure game Ryu ga Gotoku 8 Gaiden: Pirates in Hawaii starring Goro Majima, a popular character from the Ryu ga Gotoku series is doing well. The PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions are tied for first and second place with cumulative sales of both versions reaching 105,161 units. In addition to exhilarating action this title is packed with addictive content, so we can expect continued sales in the future.

From third place onwards there are a number of titles that are regulars in the top 10, such as Donkey Kong Returns HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Party Jamboree but one that stands out is It Takes Two, ranked ninth.

This is a two-player action adventure that won Game of the Year at "The Game Awards" in 2021, and the latest work from the studio that created it, "Split Fiction ", is scheduled to be released on March 6, 2025. It is likely that sales of "It Takes Two" have also increased significantly due to the increased attention given to "Split Fiction" .

PS5 Pro selling roughly 60% (head math) of the regular models is pretty good IMO. I’m sure PlayStation in general will do well next week, but it’s always interesting to see the ratio of Pro/Regular models.

Great to see Yakuza at #1

Monster Hunter Wilds will decimate it next week though.

Monster Hunter will be interesting to see so I’m looking forward to that.

I think ps5 can push 60k with MHwilds , and MH should sell at least 300k. I’m expecting a similar drop off to FF XV - FF XVI just because of the move to digital and the handheld market being the main market over there.

Finally ps5 at number one and ps4 is number 2 as a bonus thanks to Yakuza. Ps5 just needs a very good game for Japan taste to be number one. Good sales number for Ps5 and Ps5 pro console. MHW and Death Stranding 2 will be big for Ps5 and even for Ps5 pro.

Worth mentioning that Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is ranked 21st among PlayStation games on the Japanese PS Store for games over 5,000 yen.

There seems to be a massive disconnect between physical and digital sales. And I think if you're not buying games at launch, you're not caring about physical on PlayStation in Japan. Dynasty Warriors is 12th. Again, this is excluding games under 5,000 yen which would ofcourse encompass F2P.

That ratio is going to get blown up, even if the Pro model sees a healthy increase. Sony's decision not to make a Pro bundle is quite interesting. Also think they're beyond cheap for not including controllers and covers with these bundles.

I wonder why they didn't do a Pro bundle? I feel like MH is a game that looks/performs better on Pro and would be a good showcase.

DO you mean custom controller/cover?

I think they don't want to cheapen the Pro yet since it only launched less than 4 months ago, but I think a special edition pro would have still sold even if it wasn't discounted.

DO you mean custom controller/cover?

They have a special controller and console cover for Monster hunter sold exclusively in japan, but it's not part of the bundle.

Yeah, I can see how maybe they don't want the optics of it "being on sale" but it seems like a missed opportunity.

Gotcha, I'll have to look up the controller. MH is so big in Japan that I feel like they could have easily done both a bundle and a SE bundle and both would sell very well.

Yakuza is one of the franchises which has made the best transition from PS5 to PS4 in Japan (in terms of retaining its strength). MH will probably join it in that.

40K-50K for PS5 next week? What are your predictions?
80k PS5, 750k Monster Hunter Wilds.

I think the disconnect is coming from the fact those charts are measuring different things, not a disconnect between physical and digital.

If we compare "physical units sold" to "digital units sold", there's not much of a disconnect at all. The best selling physical PS5 games in January were also the best selling digital PS5 games in January.

The main physical sellers which didn't chart digitally were Black Myth Wukong (due to the launch of the physical edition) and Astrobot (likely due to holiday bundles and/or holiday presents for kids).

Your response didn't refute anything that I said and just segways to saying something else... In this case we're not talking about January, but February.

And while these charts cover revenue, when the price of these games are similar, it's pretty analogous to units sold, especially in games that don't have heavy MTX.

I mentioned January because that is the most recent month we have both the physical and digital PS5 sales from. And they showed that there wasn't a massive disconnect between physical and digital sales (which was your claim I was refuting).

When the February digital PS5 charts are released, we can see where Yakuza, Kingdom Come, Dynasty Warriors etc. rank. That will show whether a massive disconnect has happened or whether there was a small disconnect like January.

And yet when we did this little exercise in December it didn't match at all.

I'm not saying that the games can't be the same, but when they aren't that should tell us that they're not tethered.

There's somewhat of a disconnect, but generally the top games we see chart for PS5 physically give us a good idea of what will chart digitally.

This is the case in most months, though you're right that we couldn't do it in December (due to the low physical sales outside of holiday bundles).

My main objection was in terms of scale and use of the term "massive". Certainly the physical/digital disconnect on PS5 is smaller than it is on Switch, so the possible disconnect PS5 could have is a lot bigger.

If a game is #1 (relative to physical) but is #35 (relative to digital, within the same price point), there's a disconnect anyway you slice it.

You don't see nearly as much of a discrepancy in the US or the UK.

The over reliance on physical only charts continues to leave a lot to be desired when it comes to accurate data/sales analysis.

Which game are you talking about? Could you post the chart you're looking at?

We should compare a physical unit sales chart to the digital unit sales chart. That will show us whether there's a disconnect or not.

In December Dragon Quest 3 was much higher on the physical charts than it was on the digital charts at the time.

In December Dragon Quest 3 was much higher on the physical charts than it was on the digital charts at the time.
In November it was 1st on the physical charts and 1st on the digital charts. In December it was 1st on the physical charts and 6th on the digital one. In terms of 2024 as a whole it was 2nd on the physical charts and 2nd on the digital one.

So there is some difference, but we could use the physical chart numbers t work out where DQ3 would place overall.

Which games is the 1st / 35th one? And is this the chart you're looking at? https://store.playstation.com/ja-jp/pages/browse/1?5000-*=webBasePrice

If so then yes, there is a massive disconnect between that chart and Famtisu. But that disconnect would still be there even if Famitsu contained digital sales.

Woopah

Member
It was hyperbole. I didn't mean a specific game, but I've seen games on famitsu charts, I believe even DQ3 pretty low on digital but high on physical for the week.
Because they are two separate things. Famitsu is based on unit sales. The weekly chart I believe you're looking at is revenue based and includes money made from DLC / MTX and pre-orders.

That's where the disconnect you're seeing is coming from. Doesn't matter if it includes physical, digital or both, unit sales charts don't include MTX and pre-orders.

As I mentioned, I removed F2P games and based this solely on games above 5,000 yen, most of which are not dependent on MTX.

I did exactly the same and this was is what I got - https://store.playstation.com/ja-jp/pages/browse/1?5000-*=webBasePrice

In that chart I see several games that would be helped by MTX (FIFA, NBA, COD, DQ X etc.) but also several games that aren't even out yet as of this Famitsu chart (MH Wilds, Atelia Yumia, Winning Post 10 etc.). That's the disconnect.

When we get the digital unit sales chart for Feb, its going to be much closer to Famitsu than it is to the PS Store chart.

My point isn't that there is always a discrepancy, but that they do happen suggests the charts aren't aligned.

You can also sort by downloads which gives you a picture without revenue. (albeit you have to account for games in PS+)

Why not just compare the physical unit chart to the digital unit chart? Surely that's the best way to judge the disconnect.

When the Feb digital unit charts come out, we can look if Kingdom Come 2 is on there and if there is a discrepancy or not.
