In a recent Famitsu interview, Final Fantasy franchise creator Hironobu Sakaguchi confirmed that he is not planning to retire yet. In fact, the legendary RPG creator is working on a brand-new game that has yet to be announced (as he has previously teased on X).

“I made Fantasian thinking it would be my final game before retirement, but I’ve changed my mind.” Sakaguchi explains. Talking about the unannounced game in the works, he reveals, “It’s almost the same team that worked on Fantasian, but I can’t reveal what we are working on yet. One thing I can say is that working on it is really fun. It’s more a source of enjoyment than a job now.”
“Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I’ve realized that it’s nice to be part of a group of people. I’m really excited about getting to develop a game with everyone again.” He adds. “Also, this is about my private life, but my grandchild will be born soon. I’m hoping to incorporate my feelings on this into the game.”

Little is known about Hironobu Sakaguchi’s in-development title, however it is interesting to note that Mistwalker filed a new trademark for the name “FANTASIAN DARK EDGE,” in June. This might mean that we will be getting a Fantasian sequel, although nothing has been confirmed. Regardless of what Sakaguchi’s new endeavor turns out to be, we can probably expect an engrossing RPG with an engaging and emotional storyline.
Before that, Fantasian Neo Dimension is coming out on all major platforms. Developed by Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker Corporation and published by Square Enix, Fantasian Neo Dimension is shaping up to be the definitive version of the Fantasian RPG released on Apple Arcade in 2021, boasting added voice acting and 4K resolution. It also features a score by Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu.

It's cool that he's still directing games. I am curious about Fantasian.

But I also secretly wish that he and Matsuno would team up again at Square Enix for one last big effort. One last big Final Fantasy.
