FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

Those face offs became pretty popular this gen. I imagine Digital Foundry would lose a lot of revenue if one console was clearly more powerful than the other. ;)

Sorry, which blade? I didn't get the part where Sony fucked up. Seems to me the RAM is all still there, some being saved for a later date, and every last dev is excited by the power of the console. Same as yesterday.

Did they replace the GPU with a hamster wheel or something?
I wanted that significant advantage we were all thinking was going to happen and now it's looking like much less of an advantage and also a lame launch lineup compared to XBone in my opinion.

There is zero advantage, NADA, zilch that Xbox One has over PS4. One machine is clearly more powerful than the other.

Here's a question for developers:

Is it possible that Sony has blocked off a certain amount of RAM from developers for now because having them under utilize a large amount of memory might in fact be detrimental to game performance? I'm just wondering if for launch window and 2014 games that will only really use 2-3GB realistically would having a large amount of GDDR5 being accessed but not used might actually hinder overall performance.

Just speculating, I don't know anything about programming, but wondering if that be something they're looking at as a reason for the 1GB of "flexible" RAM.

No that wouldnt happen.

I for one enjoy their insider posts, even if they are wrong on occasion (though they seem to be mostly right). Maybe just not read their posts if they bother you? I'm sure I'm not the only one that appreciates the information they give us. Why ruin it for the rest of us by discouraging people that come forward with information just because you do not like to share?
Dunno, at times it feels like they deliberately try to throw in some wrong information to create some sort of narrative. I mean, telling gaffers that MS paid publishers to not mention PS4 versions of their games is going to make people have negative sentiments going into the E3 conference. Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid over this.

I also think gaming companies should be allowed to make announcements at their own pace, even if some of their employees have loose tongues.

Lol at Xbox fans making a bad thing out of this. First the 8 GB of gddr5 is still there, second if the rumor are true then Sony is trying to make the Multimedia abilities of the PS4 future proof and the OS more smooth which is a good thing because I'm going to use the PS4 as a DLNA media server.

Unused ram does not affect performance whatsoever.

what I would like to see questioned and answered, Is why is this 1gb separate, why isn't it available to everyone, IMO it has to do with the PSeye, they already have a back up for the OS to add stuff.

Excellent speculation. This jives with the rumor that they dropped the packed in PSEye for increased price advantage. In that case, what does this mean for that extra OS GB? But once again, we have absolutely no evidence that any of this is even true.

Why am I embarrassing myself. They took out the ps eye to lower the price which renders the controller features (i.e. light bar) useless and now are dedicating an awful lot of system ram to the OS.

This is untrue. There are uses for the light bar that do not require the PS Eye and if you want the Eye, buy it. I did.

I wanted that significant advantage we were all thinking was going to happen and now it's looking like much less of an advantage and also a lame launch lineup compared to XBone in my opinion.
A few things:

1) The advantages of faster RAM and a better GPU are still significant. It's not like any dev on Earth (except maybe one with the sloppiest code ever) was going to use all that RAM. Not for the first few years--at which point the OS will no doubt shrink and free up additional RAM.

2) Neither side has revealed their entire launch lineup.

3) Launch window games are this much __ of a game generation that lasts this long ______________________________________________________. Considering Sony has the far better track record of supporting their consoles beyond just the first year, I'm much more confident in what'll be coming to PS4.

4) Dat price. Sorry, but it's still not worth it to me to spend so much more for so much less, just because Microsoft insists I should have their stupid camera shooting infrared rays at my dong all day.

You're embarrassing yourself, because you're being incredibly melodramatic, about a thread based solely on speculation.

Stop it, you're ruining his fictional narrative.

And that fictional narrative would be? I got on the One for using so much resources for non gaming purposes, and now that the PS4 is doing it, I don't exempt Sony from criticism. The only fictional narrative is the one where a lot of people on here were laughing at Microsoft for using so much RAM and resources for non gaming purposes, but now that Sony is reserving just as much, if not more, all of a sudden 'it's fine' and 'the developers can't use it all.' What I'm so curious is what exactly is the mean-lean, gaming machine doing that would require so much RAM if this story ends up being true.

i thought jonathon blow said it was nice having his game able to load fully on to the ram, 5 gigs wirth at the time. he didnt sound like he was reaching some kind of ceiling. i hope we get official word soon. this thread is cray cray

If the rumors are true... does the PS4 still retain a noteworthy tech advantage over the Xbox One?.

1. The PS4 has a GPU that is 50% more powerful than Xbox One. (1.843 TF versus 1.23 TF).

2. PS4 has much higher quality RAM (176 GB/S versus an esoteric system with inherent complexities). The type of RAM is far more important than the amount. However, even if the PS4 has the worst case scenario presented in this thiread- it still has MORE RAM than the Xbox One given to developers.

TL;DR - PS4 is more powerful than Xbox One.

Can't decide who's approach was better to letting me down as a consumer. Microsoft ripping the bandaid off all at once with their policies or Sony slowly sticking the blade in my back. This just persuades me to not keep any preorders because obviously both companies are playing cat and mouse with each other and consumers.

Theyre both that way. Multi mediaboxes with fun games. Just keep an eye out for the games you like and ignore this forum's spec waving horse shit. Both machines will provide cool games for years to come.

Yes, a very significant one. This changes very little, but does change some. The biggest advantage has always been the GPU. PS4 has a similar GPU(but does seem to be more heavily customized), that has 50% more raw power with 18 CUs, and double the ROPs(1.84tflops vs 1.23tflops). The 2nd biggest advantage has been the much faster memory and higher bandwidth that comes with GDDR5. Both of these things remain unchanged.

The 3rd advantage was the amount of memory, which is no longer an advantage it seems.

edit: beaten. thuway has explained it nicely.

People were also upset that Microsoft made the unoptimal decision of going with DDR3/ES RAM as a configuration instead of forking out the proper money (which they have in spades) for GDDR5 and a more powerful GPU.

It is no narrative. The Xbox One was designed as a media device, the component choices reflect it.

Oh my, this thread has completely blown up! I'm never going to have the time to read it all.

My apologies, but considering the thread title...is this 5.5GB available for games all still a rumour? Or has any insider/develop/Sony themselves confirmed something along these lines? Thanks.

This fictional narrative:

The One is running three OSs compared to Sony's one and it is STILL using less resources than the PS4 is full hog if these rumors are true, and that's pathetic.

That's factually inaccurate. No one is saying Sony can't get flack or you can't be disappointed, but how about refrain from fudging details.

So, has Sony made a public statement yet? They need to nip this in the bud if it's a false rumour. Please, don't pull an MS and ignore it.

The most important advantages (GPU, Bandwidth) are completely unchanged. Even when the PS4 was rumored to have 4gigs of RAM it was still believed to hold the graphical advantage.

1. The PS4 has a GPU that is 50% more powerful than Xbox One. (1.843 TF versus 1.23 TF).

Thanks for clearing it up guys.

The XBone's 5GB of available slower RAM is more than the 5.5GB available around launch for PS4? With another possible gig being released later on?

This is an obvious oversimplification of the Xbox's memory architecture. What PS4 offers is still superior, but you don't have to sell the Xbox short to make yourself feel better.

Microsoft's box was an abomination when it came to gaming in my eyes, especially with their original policies. I'm not getting a One period, but when I see something Sony does that stinks, I'm not going to give them the okey doke.

As said before, the difference is still less than the PS2 vs Xbox.

More like GameCube vs Xbox.

Yeah, I bet they were counting on the point that even if their specs were weaker, third party titles would be brought down to their level of performance and they wouldn't lose money on the hardware.

You really think Sony needs to issue a press release stating " That 8 gigs of RAM we said the PS4 had.... it's still there"

Honestly, let the games speak for the system.

No, I meant the amount of RAM used for OS.

Wait, a sec, the 1GB for OS was never confirmed, right? It was based on speculation and leaks, yes?

Vaguely think of it as like say you can partition your harddisks and run two oses which have different hard disk spaces ... But for basically memory and resources ... Vaguely you can think of it that way .

I got it. I currently do this with my computer now. So its basically a partition within a partition to use for other stuff. So in actuality, the X1 has 1 solid OS for gaming purposes but has an additional partition that is split into 2 which essentially isn't 3 but since they are running different "Kernels" (not sure if that's the term) it would make them 3 because they require a different type of access?

The only thing I'm trying to understand is the rationalization for disappointment. Wouldn't Sony be frivolous and pedantic to not attempt to match feature set with the Xbox One.

Sony is focused on games (GDDR5 is not purchased in bulk for media streaming); but is it that foreign to accept Sony implementing safety nets just in case a special feature or a unforseen advance is made in technology? No one could have predicted off screen play, asynchronous gaming, and save states would be such a huge deal; and suddenly they did.

Sony nor MS want to be caught in a position where they have no room to breathe. The OS experience on the PS3 is the most criticized feature, it would be a shame for Sony to skimp out on it because GAF is angry.

Thats very debatable. Only time will tell, we wont know for sure until 4 years from now. The main reason why I would suggest the difference is bigger than either of those because the architecture is directly comparable now. The GPU/CPUs are 90% the same from an architecture point of view. There much more comparable now, its apples to apples. This means any difference in raw power should make much more of an impact this time around and should be more apparent.

thuway

That won't stop DF/Eurogamer making it seem like they are comparable.

The situation between Call of Duty Black Ops 2 on PS3 versus Xbox 360 will be the norm next generation.

Xbox One will perform like the PS3 version, lower resolution, worse performance.
PS4 will perform like the 360 version, definitive console experience.

Wow this thread doubled in size. Has there been any confirmation or denial.

Are there any particularly good meltdowns to read?

When did these become a huge deal? As far as I'm aware that no one really cares about either is part of why the Wii U is tanking.

I just saw this being linked from reddit:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=73022081&postcount=2780

And, this guy makes a good point.

reddit user said:
DF has been really inaccurate lately and considering FreeBSD only uses a total of 1gb RAM I would file this under rumors.
Edit: The more I think about this, the more it doesn't make sense. Why would Sony double the RAM to 8gb just to use almost all of that extra RAM for the OS. I smell more bullshit from DF. This is probably a placeholder OS size for Devkits or their info is completely wrong. Killzone was using 3.5gb of RAM before the upgrade so the OS was only taking up .5gb of RAM. Why would it jump in size so much? They already had the sharing capabilites and things like cross game chat with the .5gb so what could be increasing its footprint by so much. This sounds like another error by DF like the time they were so adamant the PS4 only recorded 7 minutes of gameplay when in reality its 15 minutes.
Edit2: It looks more and more likely that this was an issue with Devkits only have 8gb of GDDR5 so dev tools bloat the OS to 3.5gb. They only have 5.5gb maximum RAM available until they release a Devkit with 10-12gb GDDR5 for developers. No one has a final PS4 devkit yet and launch games won't be using more than 5gb of RAM is my guess but hey its just a guess. We need to wait for more info from Sony but one thing we can count on is that the number won't be final and they will reduce the memory footprint over time.

@Thuway: Do you have any guesses as to what percentage of GPU processing power would be sequestered for non-gaming functionality (at all times) akin to Xbone's 10%?

The Wii U might tank, but Sony is betting on Gaikai, cloud gaming, and remote play to push the Vita which is tanking worse than the Wii U. I own a Vita, and I love it, but this is a feature many of us will grow to love if its properly implemented.

Maybe this will allow multitasking of apps and games. I assume apps would be run from within the non games portion of ram.

Even then, what kind of apps you will be running to need such amount of RAM?

Hell!, I just checked and Windows (a general use OS) + more than 10 Firefox tabs (Including HD Youtube videos, and pages with tons of GIFs) + League of legends + Antivirus and all that background crap doesn't take 3GB!
