Gabe Newell says 99% of the industry thought Steam won't work as a distribution platform at the start, because "people want physical copies"

To be fair a lot of PC gamers were against Steam at the start, especially as it was needed to play Half Life 2. Me and my friend were pissed when we tried to install HL2.

Times change though, and Steam is life today.

I love how everyone is trying to nail down Steam for comment on its "Nazi" situation, and Gabe's public comment since then amounts to "btw, I'm a genius".

Found a few interesting gems deep into neogaf around steam debacle

More positive than I thought. Although, neogaf started sometime in 2004 so its missing the launch period of Steam, would have to dig into time capsules of gaming-age for that.

People thinking this started with the force steam from half life 2.

Actually If you were an avid CS player and everyone played CS 1.5 back in the day because online games were far less than today.

They forced you to have steam for cs 1.6. 1.6 was such a bait too, because it introduced 2 new guns. Everyone wanted to play it.

And by god steam was so shit back then.
