I paid $23K for my wolf suit — now I’m free of human relationships

He’s a man in wolf’s clothing — and proud of it.

Japanese engineer Toru Ueda likes to wind down from a busy week with a drink just like anyone else. But rather than heading down to the local bar, he likes to entertain at home — dressed up in a giant wolf suit worth 3 million yen [$23,000 USD].

According to the Tokyo professional, his obsession with animals stems from wanting to escape from the general hassle of being a person.

“When I wear my costume I feel I’m no longer human,” the 32-year-old told the UK Times. “I’m free of human relationships. All kinds of troubles, related to work and other things — I can forget about them.”

Ueda had his suit made last summer by Zeppet, a company that makes costumes for television and movies. Their costumes span from monsters and robots for sci-fi and horror films to animal suits for children’s television programs.

A man in Japan has spent more than $22,000 on an amazingly realistic full-size wolf suit to fulfil his childhood dream of being an animal. The man was howling with delight when he finally got to wear the gray and white costume modelled on a timber wolf and created by Zeppet Workshop, which cost a staggering 3 million yen (about $22,650 USD). He said: ““At the final fitting, I was amazed at my transformed self in the mirror. “My order to ‘look like a real wolf walking on hind legs’ was difficult – to say the least – but the complete suit looked exactly like what I imagined.” The satisfied customer added: “Because of my love for animals since childhood and some realistic animal suits appearing on TV, I dreamed of being one someday. “Thanks to the studio, one of my childhood dreams has come true.” The suit comes with an imperceptible ventilation slit, along with special features that allows the wearer to put it on by himself. According to Zeppet, which specialises in modelling, costume suits, and animatronics and robotics, the customer and creators looked at images of wolves to get every detail right during his visits for measurement and fitting, The man said: “It only took about three days from the final fitting to the delivery, but the three days felt very long. It was a kind of excitement I have not felt for a long time.” *BYLINE: ©BLAST Inc./Zeppet/LIFESTYLOGY/TMX/Mega. 10 Jan 2023 Pictured: A man in Japan has spent more than $22,000 on an amazingly realistic full-size wolf suit to fulfill his childhood dream of being an animal. *BYLINE: ©BLAST Inc./Zeppet/LIFESTYLOGY/TMX/Mega. Ueda exchanged more than 40 emails with the team and they had over three face-to-face meetings, in which he showed them images of his dream suit and finer details, like the pattern of the coat and texture of the fur. Although he wanted the human-sized suit to be as realistic as possible, he also requested it allow him to walk normally, according to the Times.

“When I look in the mirror, I see a wolf, and that is very moving,” he reflected. I’m not a werewolf — that’s a kind of monster, and I am not a monster.

The company that created the lifelike suit also made headlines in 2022 for a man-sized border collie suit, which is reportedly worth $15,400.

The company also produces lifelike replicas of people’s pets, with prices ranging depending on the size of the dog.

A smaller dog, like a Chihuahua, will set you back $2,300, while a larger dog — like a Great Dane — would be closer to $3,500.

Although cosplay is incredibly popular in Japan, Ueda said none of his friends dress up and he generally doesn’t wear his furry frock to gatherings with other cosplayers.

For Ueda, the costume gives him a power that he doesn’t feel like he has in everyday life.

Obligatory:
You have a society with lonely men and lonely women who refuse to talk to each other and pair up. Instead doing insane things like buying furry suits and paying for companionship at hostess clubs.

It’s weird, how do we fix this. You have the same situation too in every western country, especially in the cities, so we are no better.

There's definitely a difference. A coworker who had experience there took me with him years ago and we had a blast by just being forward and aggressive with women. We always started very polite of course because of the culture. But they literally craved masculinity to the point it ended up being a paradise island. Target the ones that spoke at least some English. They were super shy the first 5 minutes, after they started smiling and laughing it was game over. These chicks were basically 25-30 year old virgins who had maybe 1 boyfriend but just boiling over with years of sexual tension while trying to appear ladylike and proper. The Japanese dudes were looking at us like aliens from another planet, but we were on a mission.

It's a good question, I work with a few people who have worked over in Japan and they have had no problems with dating. 2 I know for sure got married to the women they met in over there.

They said the biggest thing women love over there is confidence. They like men who are confident and conversation starters. There is a consensus that they prefer to date western men because of how outgoing and approachable they are.

I am saying this is a societal problem. It is a problem Japan needs to fix itself, and it is a huge problem. Right now it looks like it resembles one big high school dance with the girls on one side and the boys on the other. And each side coping with these insane things and weird behavior that comes from loneliness. If it’s ostensibly an easy fix - “just talk to her, bro” - then why isn’t it happening. This is literally a civilization-ending problem for this country.

Well if Japan wants to fix this problem they need to start in the work sector. The amount of stress put on their workforce doesn't help. Most of them don't want to start families because of the added stress of raising one. Which leads to them to not want to date.

Also, I remember reading a thread on here a few years ago about how ass backwards their sex education is so I'm sure it adds to the issue.

I have no proof of this or anything, but I think some of it has to do with their obsession with anime and hentei. So you get stories of anti-social behaviour, people in animal suits and that article I saw one time of a guy marrying his anime pillow.

What happens IMO is they become nerdy hermits. Instead of trying to hang out with friends, get laid, and at the same time find a significant other to marry like everyone else does, they get accustomed to watching and playing anime TV shows and video games and jerk off. By the time they grow out of it (maybe), it's too late. They are too weird and nobody wants to get near them.

I mental & societal problem. I have a Japanese friend who's been single for most of his life (in his late-40's), teaches at a school, walks his dog and plays drums in a band as a hobby. He's told me he gets lonely but this isn't normal. If I saw him drop 3 million yen on a car and say...he it helps with my loneliness. I get it. But this...

To each their own, but man that is a huge chunk of money that I would use for everything but a wolf suit I guess. A little car, drugs, some girls, Dr Pepper and BBQ chips.

At least he didn't buy Forspoken and Japan please get your shit together and stand strong in the face of demographic uncertainty and fix that without immigration changing your country's integrity too much.

Shame he couldn't just be like, "I bought this because it looks cool and why not?" Cause the costume is nice work.

Is social media and the computer the reason we as humans are losing the ability to communicate face to face?
also.. 23K for a wolf outfit??? Seriously insane that somebody would drop that on a costume.

Yes. A lot of young people outright refuse to answer phone calls from numbers they don’t know.
Reddit is full of questions where the answer is always: “Have you tried talking about it to him/her/them”?

Well no shit it could easily be some guy who typed in the wrong number or some spam caller calling me to advertise some junk I've never heard of. That's not a problem

It isn't much different from some random weirdo showing up in your dms or some dude just randomly walking up to you trying to strike up a conversation
