Members of a family in Bantaeng, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, murdered a 16-year-old girl after finding out that she had premarital sex and was allegedly involved in an affair with her 45-year-old cousin.

Rosmini, the victim, died after her own father Darwis allegedly ordered her brothers to stab her on May 9. They then took three neighbours and the 45-year-old cousin, Usman, hostage in their home.

Neighbours told local media that they believed the entire family was possessed and involved in black magic, but police later dispelled such rumours.

One hostage managed to escape and rush to a nearby police station to report that he saw a dead body in the house. After much resistance from the family, police entered the home and found Rosmini’s body.

Twelve people lived in the house where she was killed, including her father, his wife, in-laws, children, and grandchildren. Police believe all family members were present during the murder.

True story- I was 20 years old at the time (I'm an Italian/Australian) and my girlfriend at the time was Lebanese. This was almost 20 years ago... We were going out for 6 months but were really in love. I mean, we were talking about a future together and the works BUT, I couldn't be seen in public with her. We worked together and I would always see her father in the shopping centre with other women (yes, he was cheating on his wife). Her father was strict and, even though her mother knew about us, she disapproved of the relationship. It mattered not to us as we were in love.

After 6 months of sneaking around (she would tell her parents she was seeing a friend, then I'd meet her at the train station near my house to go out together) her mother decided that my girlfriend, her mother and youngest brother were going on a trip to Lebanon. My mother told me exactly what would happen but I was young, naive and in love with her that I didn't think it would happen.

She was to go overseas for 3 months. With 2 weeks left to go, she called me at my house in tears. She was forced to get engaged to some guy within her religion. She told me she fought it and said no, and once her father caught wind of it threatened to fly up and kill her. And he literally meant kill her, not just false bravado. Unfortunately there was nothing her or I could do about it, and she was stuck with a guy she didn't love.

My religion was the reason I wasn't allowed to stay with her (I was Catholic at the time, Atheist now). I have seen and spoken to her since then. She tried to get back together with me after she had been married and had 2 kids, but as I was already married with 2 kids of my own, I wasn't willing to go back with her. The feelings are still there for both of us, but unfortunately it never materialized in the way we both desperately wanted it to.

This "honor" killing is a fucking joke. If 2 people are in love or, in the case mentioned in the OP, wanting to fulfill a sexual desire, let them be! It is natural and the thought of killing a family member, especially your own child, is abhorrent. Fuck them and their beliefs.

There is a lot of cultural misunderstanding going on in here.

Our western individualism makes it very difficult to think of our honor being sullied by the actions of a family member. But it is a powerful and pervasive force thru much of the world.

Second, looking at the story gives no indication if this had anything to do with Islam. Westerners do not generally recognize how powerful the fear of black magic can be in a lot of countries.

But I do not approve of honor killing.

On a side note, I felt weird typing this. Why is it that we talk about our society having made ‘progress’, and progress is a relative term, but we are not allowed to say that we have progressed beyond societies that perform honor killings and female genital mutilation? Ah, it is progress compared to what our society was before. Calling it progress legitimizes the current state of affairs.
