Yes, expect a 1 - 2 million first week depending on how much Capcom ships. It is coming out in the winter also. It will be huge.

Pretty interesting it is going up against pokemon. Japan may see a loss of productivity that week.

I don't think it's certain. MHP as a series is very similar to how certain Nintendo games sell, which is a good indication that the series is very successful and popular among mainstream audiences including kids and people who aren't particularly the type who are super hyped up to rush out and buy a game on the first day.

Certainly, it will do very well in the first week, and I doubt it'll sell less than 900k. Capcom will definitely ship over a million, like they did with MH3, but it doesn't mean it'll sell a million in the first week that easily. Ultimately, it means very little to the series, since it has never been particularly front loaded, and it keeps selling because the interest and appeal is there.

I can't see MHP3 doing less than 1.5 million in the first week. MHP2G didn't sell >1M in the first week only because Capcom didn't ship enough copies and now the franchise is more than twice as big as it was when that game launched.

MHP3 should be much more frontloaded.

Media Create had an estimated shipment of 920k. For them (and from reports from Japanese retailers) there was a first week sellout.

Going with MC's sales numbers, it still would've had 89% sell-through on the first week and needed a 400K second week shipment just to cover the sales that week. That indicates that supply wasn't flowing freely on that first week, at least.

As pointed out by Chris1964 above, MC's estimated first week shipment was 7% less than Capcom's reported first week shipment. There may be some statistical worth in using MC's shipment estimate with MC's sales estimate, but the actual shipment according to Capcom was 0.99m.

If Nintendo cleverly release the 3DS around the same time as Pokemon Black/White, and add 3DS enhancements to PB/W, then I think that will give both the 3DS and Pokemon itself a fairly large boost, which should be more than enough to push it past MHP3.

This indicates to me that Atlus actually had difficulty restocking SJ, as opposed to them not being interested in shipping more copies. I bet using a 1gbit cart factored into their problems. The same thing happened with Infinite Space for Sega. It seems if you have a low print run for a 1gbit game, and demand is higher than expected, you can't immediately ship more as fast as you would need to capitalize on the demand.

it sold almost 500k copies, not bad at all. factoring in a PAL release it should be able to reach 600k copies, possibly something more.

MHP is some whack phenomenon rarely ever seen in the industry. Every time its looks like growth have finally levelled off, it just keep out performing.

When MHP came out everyone barely noticed it and said it was a pokemon clone PS2 port. The series went out to be a surprise hit.

Then MHP2 came out and people were predicting it might make 1 million before budget release. The series grew to being one of the top 3rd party franchises in Japan.

Then MHP2G came out and most people didn't think it would outsell MHP2. I mean expansion+ rarely ever outsell the original. The series grew to become the 2nd biggest 3rd party franchise in Japan (Maybe the 2nd best selling 3rd party game ever in Japan too) and the best selling non-Nintendo, non S-E game ever.

Who knows what MHP3 could do. All I know is never underestimate a MH game on the PSP.
