Media Create Sales: Week 11, 2014 (Mar 10 - Mar 16)

Nintendo is the most secretive company in the business currently. Nintendo is known to dev games and release the same day as the reveal.

Nintendo is more than willing to say it fucked up, they have been doing it for a while now.

Just gave it a rest. They are in a bad place and they admitted it already.
I can't wait for Secret-Big-Budget-Wii U-Saving-Game #3's same day reveal and release. I hope it has Kaiju. I bet it's 3 years in development now.

We should put it on the chalkboard.

As soon as their QOL stuff takes shape, they'll jump off the Wii U train with jetpacks

Seriously? It's hard to imagine QOL succeeding at all, let alone even coming remotely close to picking up the slack left by their flatlining console business.

Nintendo can barely compete with declining companies like MS and Sony in the console gaming market. It's going to be a freaking bloodbath seeing Nintendo try to compete against juggernauts like Apple, Google, Nike, etc in the health tracking market. It's going to be even worse than when everybody and their mom tried to compete against the iPod.

IMO Nintendo will give console gaming at least one more shot. They probably won't succeed, but they simply can't bet the future of a $17 billion company on a brand new market segment + handhelds (which are also in decline).

Who will buy 3DS for Smash and Dragon Quest? Hardly anyone.

Why not? There was never a portable version of a Smash Bros game before, so it'll be a brand new experience. Don't be surprised if the 3DS version outsells the Wii U in the end. In Japan this will most likely will happen (worldwide, too).

We don't know what QOL is yet. It's not a health tracker as far as we know, at least it's not just one. It's a bit shortsighted to just dismiss it based on your own personal views of what it may be.

I agree, from my anecdotal experience serious fitness folks want to use Garmin or Polar and the casuals are only interested in anything to do with Nike.

Regardless whether it's a health/fitness tracker or some other type of health-related product, it's pretty hard to imagine Nintendo doing something that Apple/Google can't do better. I'm curious to see what they come up with but I'm extremely skeptical that it will succeed.

I don't think making a big budget game is going to save the console. I think that coasting along and not making a lost or huge lost until next gen will be key.

They just don't have the install base to support a big budget titles. Nintendo is the best at keeping budgets very low tho which is good. They are not bloated or anything, they only have what they need and that is it.

Big budget doesn't mean good games you know. Many big budget games fail. They just need to provide some great games and survive this generation. Rethink and execute next generation.

Screw that damn chalkboard also.

Generally if you are making a new market the current markets as they exist are not so important. You'd need to examine what needs exists (whether or not people actually know they want them), and how the product fits. We have only a vague concept of the needs and no concept of the product so it's impossible to judge. Quite honestly this whole talk about fitness devices is a red herring because it encompasses so little about what Nintendo has described anyway.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
To ne honest, they seemed quite humble during last Investor meeting: no absurd dreams about Wii U anymore, just the reality of trying to do as much as possible with it. Of course, they received a reality slap with the force of 2,000 suns and moons, but still they seemed much more humble.

Vita and PS4 in a heated battle for 2nd place. Vita still hanging in there. I expect to see a small pre-Miku bump for Vita over the next week. :)

Vita outsold PS4... VITA outsold PS4!!! WTF is going on? So wrong, but so right for their market. Japan needs some devs to get PS4 games out on shelves, this is crazy bad for the console. At this rate, NA may never see any console jrpgs this gen.!!!

The Vita has a much better library.

PS3 was really slow for 2 years, but then JRPGs started picking up over the next couple years, and it's gotten/getting some good ones this year. Plus P5 and probably Zestiria and the new Atelier game localized next year...

It will see FFXV and Kingdom Heart 3 unless they get cancelled. Japan will be a really slow starter this gen, nothing we can do about, maybe in 1-2 years.

So just like last gen.

well, you never know, we are talking about SE here....

PAtience, I know, but dammit I want some next gen JRPG goodness sooner, lol.

Even if the PS4 was selling better it'd still take 1-2 years for RPGs to start popping up.

PS4 should be OK in the long run. Play PS3 RPGs for now...or don't play them at all on consoles.

I can see smaller low investment titles still being made. But outside of the already announced well before release untitled The Legend of Zelda title, I doubt there'll be much more in terms of major releases. I just don't buy the idea that there's a slew of major titles in the works for a comatose platform. It would seem much more prudent to invest more in the platform that's actually providing income but is seeing sharp declines, or to a successor to that platform in a market that you have traditionally dominated.

---

On QoL, I'm curious whether the FDA will classify whatever they're making as a medical device, considering mobile medical apps are now regulated depending upon the claims they make iirc.

Ps4 drops as expected. Lol @ everyone who got excited over that first week number...

When does the Wii sports Wii u SKU come out? Expected Wii u to jump to 9k that week

I'll laught if it turns out they are taking all the casual wii fit, wii sports stuff and making it a new fitness platform with some mario/zelda branding as a cherry on top of casual pie.

ba·si·cal·ly : in a general or basic way

Of course MH4G, DQ11, SSB4 and PKMN Z will move hardware, but these are all heavy hitters.

Mario Party would be a system seller years ago, 3DS is past the growth stage. The audience is already there.
Did I miss something?, thats a WiiU/PS4 game bro.

Oh man I don't know. I'm sleep deprived and so this conversation feels like it was written by Lewis Carroll.

According to Garaph the DS saw a big hardware sales bump in the DQIX release week, from a roughly 50K for the previous week to 150K, according to Famitsu. It's also worth to note the DS hadware ltd was already at 26M. That's what Chris want to say I think : we can expect a bump for - if - DQXI.

Yes mainline entry always brings good number of people to platform who didn't buy it previously for demos/remakes/spinoffs.

The irony is the fact that the same people who claim that the QOL is definitely going to fail are generally the same people who claim the Sony VR is definitely going to succeed.

Hilarious.

The DS still had 6-7 million units left in it at that point. I doubt we can say the same for the 3DS. Not to mention the fact that I was predominantly questioning the selling power of Pokemon Z and MonHun 4G, rather than a title that hasn't even been announced yet.

I think you're right though, that was what he was getting at.

It's pretty pathetic how Nintendo is trying to emulate Apple/Google's pursuits, believing they can incorporate those ideas into the isolated sphere of gaming, when they're failing to understand that video games are overlapping more and more with other software markets dominated by bigger, more successful software companies. The only thing those companies can't do that Nintendo does best is make great games, so they should focus on that and improve their online infrastructure.

Assumption. We have no idea where they're going with the QOL platform. There is no evidence that they are trying to emulate Apple/Googl'es pursuits.

Sony really needs to open up a few more manufacturing plants. They can't push enough of this systems out.

From a long term business point of view this is a bad idea, because once the demands drops to regular levels they would end up with too many plants, wasting tons of money on operating overhead.

Better to not have enough now, than to be stuck with too many later.

These next few months are gonna be dark for these consoles.

Do Sony or Nintendo care about a consistent release schedule anymore?

The greatest criticism I've repeatedly seen is that they aren't emulating Apple/Google.

The phrase "Quality of Life" doesn't reconcile with my idea of traditional gaming. How does this new direction make Mario, Zelda, or Metroid more improved game experiences? How does it gel with third party developers, or does Nintendo not give a sh** what third parties think of this new direction (as usual)?

It doesn't. It's completely independent to their home console and handheld departments.

Because it's new avenue for revenue and userbase. Sony would not still be in the gaming market if they didn't sell insurance because the sustained effort would be too much for them financially. MS wouldn't be if they didn't sell business software. Nintendo would like to be more sustainable and part of that comes from diversity. It's not either/or, it's both. They aren't taking your games.

Think of Nintendo's upcoming QoL platform like SEGASammy's pachinko division or Konami's health centers/spas

PS4 has a slow year ahead of it. Wonder what the final LTD will be.

vita holding up surprisingly well? Still not good numbers though I don't think

And the 3DS isn't doing so well either I guess?

Surprised by how the PS4 held. But this is the beginning of it falling behind the PS3's sales.

Exactly. It's all about becoming more than just a games company. Nothing wrong with video games but why do you think Amazon and such and even *gasp* Apple want to get into video games? It's all about diversity. Picking into each little pocket and spreading out. Sony make, or at least at one point made PC's and Televisions and mobile phones and Walkman and medical devices, movies as well as video games at any given time. Nintendo is unique in that it only deals with video games. Chances are we won't feel the effects of QOL on the gaming side.

I know people worry about resources but I feel that the people working on such experiences will be specialised in that area. It's no different to the current output we get from Nintendo in fact. We still get Wii Fit and Sports and Wii music and Party today. These types of experiences will just be found on the other side.

I don't see how you can be surprised with PS4 numbers when Battlefield 4 was its best selling title. It needs games for that market.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Hilarious.

A market with Apple, Google, Samsung, and Nike dominating and continue to dominate with smartphones as the QoL delivery mechanism of choice stretching beyond billions.

A market that consists of a rival still in development kit releases.

That's a pretty okay score for Vita, not incredible but it should stay at this level as a minimum for the next few weeks considering there's Jump Vs, Sengoku Musou 4, Atelier something, Hatsune Miku and SRW Z3 coming over the next few weeks.

Granted, a number of these are also on PS3 and part of niches Vita has already been tapping but they should eventually add up.

Who is going to make those games, though? It would be suicidal to start cranking out games specific to Japanese tastes given the console numbers lately.

Mobile or die for that market, apparently.

ah, cant wait until Smash restabilishes some divine order
Pretty sure the handheld with Doodle God, Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims, God Eater 2 and God of War Collection is the one that ought to be at the top in that case.

Edit: forgot Sorcery Saga: Curse of The Great Curry God.

Edit 2: oh, and Injustice: Gods Among Us.
