Not to mention that the sum of all Otome game sales released in one year for Vita probably amount to 1% of yearly 3DS software sales, so neither Nintendo should lose their sleep over them, nor they would mean anything for Nintendo in an hypothetical situation where the handheld market collapses further and the 3DS successor fails to take off.

I love the idea that there's a significant Vita audience to migrate anywhere.

It still has games that somehow lack on Nintendo system. I think that, IF PSP3 will not show up, in order for the 4DS to stay relevant could be positive to attract those titles/demographic

Not to go totally off track, but I think what's more important than any specific percentage of raw title count is investment.

While number of titles is certainly part of that, the other battle to focus on is getting major franchises and major new IP (and important entries in those brands), high quality third party staff working on games for their platform, a large amount of money from the publisher itself going into building a 4DS development pipeline, and strong launch investment around each of these titles as well.

If you manage to keep X% of titles released, but they're notably less important titles, then you end up with the disparity between the 3DS and Vita where the Vita is currently getting more software, but is still leagues behind the 3DS.

Now, for the Vita that was obviously an improvement over "dead platform," but given Nintendo's position, during the transition I think what's more important than courting Falcom, Idea Factory, Nippon Ichi, or the otomi market would be just picking up a couple of key franchises like God Eater, Phantasy Star, and Toukiden or Namco's bigger licensed titles that show up on Vita like Sword Art or whatever is relevant at that point in time.

Like, to put this another way, I don't think it matters where Valhalla Knights shows up, but in Nintendo's ideal world something like SaGa shouldn't have even been considered for Vita, much less being exclusive to it.

Of course, we're ultimately talking about a system where the peak software sales are 400,000 units. There's kind of a question of how much you'd really gain even if you got every last bit of notable software. The bigger focus might just be on retaining the third party franchises they do have that do much, much better, and trying to convince third parties to make more of those for their next system instead of almost every new major effort going to mobile.

I totally agree. Mine was a semplification, but the concept was the same. I was exactly thinking about that type of game you cited

Yeah, sometimes I feel people overestimate how much PSV games tend to sell. For example, I read often about these otome games, but the best-selling one is at about 35k units, which is really nothing in the grand scheme of things (on PSP there is some otome game that sold more than 100k).

I believe that the games Nirolak cited could be a good opportunity for the 4DS to keep on track with the 3DS in terms of sales, even with the mobile growing, despite them being less important than YW.

There's also the potential for the Vita to just get an extended lifespan, but how will 3rd-parties feel about that? I think once 4DS comes out, people will want the newest platform
That's not what happened with the PS4. Or the Wii U. Or the Vita. Or the 3DS really.

and 4DS should be more powerful so right away the superior visuals will be an incentive to draw away the Vita crowd.
With which development budgets? I mean, if you look at third party Vita games, there's practically no one who has the budget to really push the Vita graphically. You get some nice models and effects, but still nowhere even close to the level of Killzone Mercenary or even Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Outside of Nintendo's own games and a few big franchises, I doubt the 4DS would be able disgusting itself as a significant graphical upgrade to the Vita.

Sony handheld audience want console like games on handheld it's not that true for Nintendo handheld, kids games never does well on sony handheld unlike Nintendo ones

Maybe, but what I was saying is that such contribution would not being as meaningful as people expect. I don't think that God Eater, Sword Art Online (which is probably going to be PS4-locked), SaGa and some visual novel such as Dangaronpa are "a good opportunity for the 4DS to keep on track with the 3DS in terms of sales". They might sell well, and sell a few units of hardware, but their impact would be almost irrelevant.

I think Monster Hunter itself would basically get everyone who would have played the hunting action games on 3DS anyway.

For SaGa there are a variety of bigger RPGs and then Danganronpa I imagine has cross-over appeal with things like Ace Attorney.

Anime licensed games are kind of a particular audience and getting all of Namco's support might be helpful, but as pennywise mentioned, I see the PS4 as still a notable challenger on that front.

However, Sony announced an $1100 Walkman at CES so obviously there's some level of insanity and flagrant monetary waste going on at the company, so I'm not going to write it off entirely.

I think that doesn't correlate with waste money on a handheld again. Sony is aiming to high end market with the new Walkman, a market that is willing to not listen "crappy" MP3/I-tunes on their android/IOS devices. It is a product aimed exclusively to a high end market, something that doesn't correlate to current status on the handheld market since there is no demand for a high-specs/High priced device on the portable gaming industry (otherwise the Vita wouldn't be dead as it is) meanwhile on the music industry there are already different portable devices that only focus on high end market.

What kind of unit volume do these things tend to sell?

What kind of unit volume do these things tend to sell?

Ten of thousands or more. Also the Pono Kickstarter got over 18K backers, so there is a niche market for it that is willing to expend $400 or more on one of this kind of devices, and the new Walkman seems to aim even higher market than the Pono which is more practical and with less whistles. Though I don't know the number behind the AK240 it seems to be a market willing to pay up to $2500 for one of this things.

I guess Sony is just following a new trend in a niche market and waiting for it to become mainstream in the future, business as usual for Sony on the last 10 years.

Like... indefinitely?
Well, certainly long enough for the 4DS to get off to an even rougher start than the 3DS.

I'm just thinking that seems to me that Japanese publishers more and more just want to wait for a platform to prove its worth by itself before investing in it, and cling to what works until it completely collapses.

It will be interesting to see where the PSV support goes if there's no successor.

I think the niche devs like NIS, D3, GUST will stick to PS4. Falcom has a sizeable audience on PS3/V and are delving into PS4.
All the big anime games, Naruto, DBZ, One Piece, SAO? will remain on PS4.
You have your monster hunting genre like God Eater, Tokiden Phantasy Star with several of them getting PS4 ports now (presumably for the West). I don't see the audience for those types of games going to PS4 so they will move to the 4DS.
What else is there? VN's? I don't know.

SaGa is a very interesting case. Its a big seller (relative to PSV's library) and is SE's first real push on the system, though I would not be surprised if this got a PS4 port.

Why do you expect Monster hunter games being on ps4 Monste hunter it's not doing big numbers of home consoles,God eater will doing a lot better on psv then ps4

it is a matter of perception, not only direct sales. if people will perbeive develmpers shifting away from portables to mobile or coming back to home it would be worst than people perceiving portabl gaming consokjidating on N platform, for them. especially with their home side so jeopardized

I quite agree on this scenario, even if I actually think that big anime games could come on 4DS as well...in the same way they come to PS3, PS4 and Vita: as multi-platform releases. Nis, D3, Gust and the other niche devs could start seeing a Nintendo platform as an actual choice, but they won't come in droves and they will surely continue to develop mainly on Sony consoles, given their audience / sales targets.

I just want to address this point first. I think there has been some denial over the fact that the Vita sales have held back software sales in the same way the Wii U sales have. God Eater only sold 400K on the Vita but sold an additional 200K on PSP and if the Comgnet is representative those 200K PSP owners haven't upgraded to Vita and/or PS4 for Rage Burst. It's very likely, with MonHun being exclusive, that those 200K upgraded to 3DS instead.

As to the other point I think the number of releases does actually help the sales of hardware, even if a lot of games target a similar niche. Having a fuller, richer line up keeps interest in the device between the tentpole releases.

I don't think it's a 1:1 situation. For instance, to use a much smaller scale, if the PS4 and Wii U's lineup were instead combined on one platform I think that platform would be outselling the PS4 and Wii U combined and the software would be selling much better. Do you disagree with that?

Well, for the last part, that's not implausible since the bar is so low already that all the software combined could win a few more people over than either line-up alone.

However with the 4DS I feel that's going to either pass or miss the "worth it" bar on the merits of other, much larger software to the point where a couple of extra lower end mid-tier games won't really change things.

You have to go through 32 3DS games before you hit the sales of the absolute best performing Vita game: https://sites.google.com/site/japanltdrank/show?platform=3DS

Beyond that, it takes going down 43 games to hit the #2 best selling Vita game, and #3 drops five more past that.

I just feel the sales aren't here to drive things. If we were looking at a PSP type situation where there were 24 games above 400K sales (which is higher than the top Vita game) and a bunch not far behind, with several of the top ones either over or nearing a million, it would be a pretty different situation.

In fact, I feel it actually was, since the 3DS ended up picking up Monster Hunter which was a major boon to the system, and we don't have kid focused Level 5 games on the Vita a la Little Battlers.

That's definitely true but as I suggested earlier that 400K cap might simply be because of the Vita and not the software.

However you might be totally correct that the amount of audience that doesn't already overlap is small. I do think there could be a (small) subset of people who didn't buy either a 3DS or Vita though because their individual lineups are not strong enough.

I think the biggest (positive) effect on the hardware side would be making the hardware sales less seasonal. There are still periods of time where Vita is receiving comparatively bigger releases in between the big 3DS releases.

The only way to truly judge comparative software sales potentials is day-and-day multiplatform releases. Which Japenese handheld teams aren't doing. So we can keep spinning this wheel forever.

so psycho you think everything will stay on ps family? I dont know. development cost, portable popularity, and so on could play a role for the N handheld imho. not mentining mobile

I don't think that's true, you could simply end up dividing sales that way. Exhibit A: Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 sold better on Vita but the sales of the two versions still only equalled Samurai Warriors Chronicles 2nd at best.

Actually, I think (going by Dengeki) the 3DS version should be higher than the Vita one. But the difference shouldn't be that big.

The niche devs like GUST and NIS have always had a focus on Playstation home consoles. Falcom also has a notable base on PS3 and I expect them to try PS4/PSV releases. Big anime games are popular in the West. Naruto sold 1.75 million in the West. Those franchises will continue being on home consoles that are relevant in the West.

Other way around on who's sold more, iirc, as the 3DS version had longer legs.

I think there's actually a lot to be said about how the Vita's limited population pool ultimately cripples the legs of a title/franchise even if that franchise were to occupy a similar niche/market as the big sellers.

Quality title + word of mouth + larger pool of population means you get a bigger spread. Higher the population, in fact, the more sway WoM will have on the fate of a title.

Has these hardware sales numbers any significance? Seeing the huge difference between Famitsu and Media create?

Media create numbers seems to be as proper as numbers from the "chartz" side we not talk about.

All trackers, Media Create, Famitsu and Dengeki, uses real sales data, but they are also estimating a portion of the sales (because they dont have sales data from all stores etc.). Since there is estimating also going on, the numbers can be different between the trackers, sometimes more noticeable than others. All trackers are concidered as official trackers though, it is nothing like "chartz".

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Atlus Best Collection) announced for March 19th release for 2,980 yen.

Edit: Sorry, that was old (other than it being an official announcement):
Two more releases - Doraemon Kanji Battle 3DS 26 Feb and Soul Hackers budget version 19 March.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Is it me or it seems that Nintendo are pro-actively licensing pre-order incentives with Amazon.co.jp

It's like every release announced has a special something with Amazon hahahah

Huh, Dengeki have Final Fantasy Explorer at 265k:

10./07. [3DS] Final Fantasy Explorers (Square Enix) {2014.12.18} - 7.906 / 265.221 (-76%)

That's surprisingly high. Quite a bit higher than MC and Famitsu.

Since a few days ago we were talking about F2P on portable consoles, I suppose this news should fit here

The game just informed me that, in the first month (the game launched December 17th) there have been over 1 million unique players. Baito, the friendly sales-rabbit informs us that there's been many interesting customers, including one who's collected over 100 Isabella (Animal Crossing: New Leaf) badges, a customer who only collect badges that look like money or coins, and someone who's great at the practice machine, but sucks when it gets to the real thing.

As a celebration of 1 million customers you also get 2 free plays on the real machines.

He also announced an update/patch coming for the game in about March, but gave no details.

Did a search and couldn't find anything, but please feed me to the claw if old.

Brief explanation of what it is always from StreetsAhead

Basically, it's a free to download game where you pay 90 yen for five plays at one of a dozen catcher/claw machines to collect Nintendo themed badges for use on your 3DS home screen. You can 'win' free plays on the machines through a daily practice mode and sometimes the game with give you free plays on special occasions (like New Years Day).

Also, I think it literally appeared on eShop without relevant promotion / anticipation, but if anyone can confirm / deny this, it'd be heavily appreciated.

why in the blue hell a 3ds game cost that much? or am I reading it wrong..?

So has Kirby been on Comget at all?

I don't think so. uberbomb? or it doesn't mean much for such a cute mascotte game?

Big anime games are popular in the West. Naruto sold 1.75 million in the West. Those franchises will continue being on home consoles that are relevant in the West.

I'm not saying that everything will go 4DS, but I'm not so sure that everything will stay on PS4/5: hunting games for example became so popular on portable for reasons, not because of fate. If MH5 (IF, I don't know) will be on 4DS, if SE will be satisfied with FF Explorer sales, if Nintendo will somehow incentive third parties (as I mentioned) in bringing games from the start on 4DS to consolidate the perception of the console even more in Japan. we could end up seeing more third party properties on 4DS; other will migrate to mobile; other to PS environment/home. Some, as the anime/manga ones, could be multiplatform to reach both the West and the Japanese audience (it's not that on 3DS we don't see Bandai developing licensed games even today).
Plus, it's not that software houses historically ner to PS environment, could not change their approach to Nintendo portable, if it will be the only relevant console in Japan (remember that we are talking based on the hypotesis that there will be no PSP3 at all), if the development costs will still see a gap as it is today, if the portable console will still be so way more popular than the home ones as it is today and so on.
I think that we saw on DS and 3DS various examples of software houses/properties that were PS exclusive or more oriented to PS environment before. I think that if there will be no PSP3 at all, some could at least try to propose its games on the 4DS, while continuing proposing them also, or partially also, on PS4/5.
Without forgetting mobile.
I think that if there will be no PSP3, we'll see a fragmantation of the previous PSP/VIta developed games/properties across all the three "platforms", with different incidence.

Since a few days ago we were talking about F2P on portable consoles

I didn't get the details, but it seems that with Pokemon shuffle, Denpa Man free and this, Nintendo and the Pokemon Company are somehow trying this business model on the 3DS.
On the other side, N and mobile developers (so far, only Gung-ho, right?) moved toward each other to mix their brand awarness and find mutual success.
I wonder if Deep Down and Project Treasure could be seen as the main tentative to bring that business model into the home console segment too.

The latest Dragon Ball Xenoverse trailer didn't list Xbox 360 or XBO platforms.

Bandai sure waited late to cancel this if they indeed are.
