I've just checked 2013 vs 2011 and this is how new OP volumes sold:

1 3,147,224 One Piece 69 (2013/03)
2 3,039,487 One Piece 70 (2013/06)
3 2,890,263 One Piece 71 (2013/08)
4 2,354,005 One Piece 72 (2013/11)

01 – One Piece Volume 61: 3,382,588 copies
02 – One Piece Volume 62: 3,207,568 copies
03 – One Piece Volume 63: 3,073,175 copies
04 – One Piece Volume 64: 2,652,700 copies

The difference is not that big between those 2 years. So the difference is how well old stuff was selling.

For what I've seen Attack of Titans is The Shit right now. Just wow.

Correct, volume wise per sales did not decline that much.

What really happens was the hype from the a event in OP world that boost all previous volumes of OP sales. That is a common occurrence for any series that gain anime adaption, be it the recent examples of Magi or SnK. Or even Nisekoi.

Nanatsu would follow into the same footstep, it's actually a competent battle shounen.

Predict how much these titles will sell in the month (from May 26 to Jun 29):

[WIU] Hardware (35 days) - 80,000
[WIU] Mario Kart 8 (32 days) - 350.000

[PS4] Watch Dogs (4 days) - 40.000
[PS3+360] Watch Dogs (4 days) - 55.000
[PS3+WIU] Kamen Rider Battride War 2 (4 days) - 40.000

Let's see how this goes :p

Correct, volume wise per sales did not decline that much.

What really happens was the hype from the a event in OP world that boost all previous volumes of OP sales. That is a common occurrence for any series that gain anime adaption, be it the recent examples of Magi or SnK. Or even Nisekoi.

Nanatsu would follow into the same footstep, it's actually a competent battle shounen.

I don't know what that Nanatsu series is. Despite the spike in sales usually bounded to anime released I think Shingeki no Kyojin has actually sold much better than usual. Even the game sales were quite good despite the shortages and all that.

The manga even suprassed Naruto last year.

What's so fun about Nisekoi? I read a few chapters when it started and it was as generic as a romantic comedy as it could.

I don't read/watch as much stuff as I did a few years ago though. The last stuff I saw was SAO (it was ok), SnK (I really liked it) and I sometimes watch Gintama now (which is amazing :p)

It really depends on how long the PS4 is selling before we get the next system or whatever. For a large portion of the PS3's life, mobile wasn't really relevant in Japan. Now it is. At the very least, the PS4 will sell pretty terribly this year. The question is when would titles that could pick up Japanese PS4 hardware sales actually come into play? Even the PS3 wasn't much above 4m after 4 years there, so I could see the PS4 in a similar state sadly. Sure eventually it may climb to 6-7m at that pace, but it's still pretty bad.

Well, in Japan it doesn't matter all that much when the system is launching. It could still sell around PS3 numbers (8-9 million units) even if the generation is shorter since Japan usually waits 18-24 months to jump on new systems xD.

Japan Studios needs to get their ass together if they want the PS4 to be succesful. That means more collaborations and more internal developed games. Hope that SSM guy can help to make those guys get some focus.

Didn't that have a lot do with length of the generation? If it was a standard generation length even Ps3 would be a abysmal failure.

I don't see this generation lasting that long.

Luigi's Mansion 2 has sold 1,011,955 copies according to Game Data Museum (Famitsu numbers). There are some other 3DS and PS3 game updates as well but this stood out the most.

Japan doesn't wait 18-24 months to jump on new systems and don't expect anything from Japan Studios.

I dont expect anything for them. Every game they release is a gift xD. And by Japan I meant japanese developers. Obviously japaneses are going to wait if the games they want dont hit the new console.

Didn't that have a lot do with length of the generation? If it was a standard generation length even Ps3 would be a abysmal failure.

I don't see this generation lasting that long.

Well, the PS3 was at 8.5 million units sold on Christmas 2012. Which means a 6 years cycle. And around 7.5 on Christmas 2011. Those dates look like the moment when new consoles would have launched on a normal lifecycle.

People are gaming on PS3: same game with worse graphics at no additional cost (they already have a PS3)

Longtime PS1 owners didn't have a choice in 2001 (They had already played the best PS1 games and MGS/FF/GTA/GT/J&D/SH/Onimusha were PS2 exclusives).

That explains why the PS2 sales went off into the stratosphere in 2001 while PS4 sales are starting to resemble to PS3 Fat sales (at 399). And things could get worse after the Kinectless XBO launch.

I'm confused, why are you comparing separate fiscal years in the first two and then breaking up the first fiscal year instead in the third?

I must have lost the turn where Freedom Wars became such a big title.

Made by the developer as God Eater. Has Attack on Titan like grappling action, which is the rage right now. Gameplay looks solid. Aestetically more pleasing to an average consumer than Soul Sacrifice.

I think at the very least it'll do better than Soul Sacrifice. Beyond that, it's a tough call.

Do you think any known title on the Vita will have a bigger opening week than God Eater 2? Anything that might eventually outsell it? I'm not really aware of the Vita's JP release schedule.

Puzzle & Dragons W will be coming out on July 17th: https://twitter.com/serkantoto/status/470602758765019137

It's essentially an update that makes the game now have two modes. There's traditional mode, and then there's a new mode with a lighter aesthetic that just focuses on playing the puzzles without the whole monster raising/dungeoning components. Instead, you earn aesthetic items to put on your avatars.

You can see the new start screen in the second image below along with the aesthetic for the new mode.

This basically allows them to target the Candy Crush/Bejeweled audience that might find P&D's dungeoning/collection elements either uninteresting, inaccessible, or not as fun as the puzzles, or anyone who plays the game and wants a break from the dungeoning aspects.

Additional details are here: http://www.indienavi.com/2014/02/20/gungho-reveals-pd-follow-up-puzzle-dragons-w/

As a side question, would people like me to report on Japanese mobile/social game news in general in this thread?

It would mostly be in terms of market performance, though obviously there's be some notable announcements thrown in.

This is a legitimate question since I don't want to clog up the thread if people aren't interested.

I put the P&D news in here since they might make another retail game based on P&D:W at some point, but if there are people interested in more news I can provide that as well.

Btw. How the hell does PvD work without a real account system? How do it handle all the iAP? Let's say I play it on my Android for hundred of hours and spent a bunch of money on it... If I loose my phone, is there a way to get all the stuff back?

And there is still no official release of the game on the european Play Store - how can they justify not releasing the game in one of the biggest Android markets. Don't they like euros?

Thanks guys.

Well in that case I'll start off with a boil down on the Square Enix apps that appear in the top 100 highest grossing apps. Tomorrow I will do Sega, who is doing much better than I thought they would be. However, I think Square Enix's recent behavior is probably of more interest to people.

Square Enix currently has five top 100 apps. I've included the rank charts for their complete life cycle, and set all scales to 100 so as to make them more easily comparable. I've also included notes about each title.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light
iOS: Rank 35
Android: Rank 18
Judging by how this game is performing, its revenue (and ability to maintain position top tier positioning) is presumably tied to in game events. Unfortunately I don't speak Japanese, so I can't confirm this, but the swings from the lower 20's to lower 30's (depending on platform) all the way up to rank 3 on iOS and top 5 positioning on android leaves no other logical situation. This suggests people find the events really compelling, but the game doesn't have the kind of critical mass to stay in the top 10 solely on regular stamina and monster spending. Overall, still by far their biggest title.

Final Fantasy Agito
iOS: Rank 36
Android: Rank 65
This game is kind of unusual in that it's a large file size game, runs on a very select number of devices (it requires an iPhone 5 or higher), and is based on a game targeted at the PSP audience. Obviously not the most natural fit for the mobile market, but it seems to be doing all right for now. The reviews for this product are currently toxic, and quite a few of them apparently note it's buggy (notably there seem to have been six patches already) and has aggressive monetization, but given the way the review chart looks, I have to imagine a lot of the 1 star reviews are driven by FF fans being pissed this is on mobile. Whether or not this remains relatively stable will be interesting to watch, since it's the least obvious fit for a social game, but that also means it stands out. Given this is the most international friendly game of anything on the list, its worldwide performance (if localized) will also be interesting to factor in.

Sengokushi Rumble
iOS: Rank 38
Android: Rank 63 (This is oddly linked incorrectly on App Annie)
This is one of Square Enix's oldest titles to still be a top grossing hit, having released in July 2013. On iOS its position seems to be incredibly linked to events, whereas on Android it's much more stable. However, on Android it's seemingly also only been out since April. Overall, this game's longevity in the top charts is an encouraging sign for Square Enix in terms of being able to actually maintain presence for more than a few months, even if there's clearly been some decay. So far all the other titles on this list have yet to prove that for a 6+ month period.

School Girl Strikers
iOS: Rank 41
Android: Rank 13
This game is another new release that has shot up the charts. While not shown here, it's currently the #3 most downloaded app on iOS in Japan, so there's clearly a huge influx of users. Whether or not they will stick around and keep this game in the top charts is yet to be seen. I'm honestly kind of surprised at how popular it is given it seems to be some kind of... well just look at this, but we'll ignore that for now. Agito by comparison is much lower in the download charts, so this encouragingly high performance is a good sign that they can at least make games that appeal enough to people for them to download them en masse.

Dragon Quest X
iOS: Rank 67
Android: Rank 58
Yep, this is the iOS/Android cloud version of Dragon Quest X, and it's doing surprisingly well considering what it is. Apparently this was a much better decision than I would have expected. It's obviously not quite up there with the other titles, but hey, it's a streamed MMO on a phone. Nevermind, this is the companion app.

Nirolak, considering how many times DQM:SL has been downloaded (was it 3+ millions?), how would you rate the current performance, relying so heavily on events?

Instead, for Agito, we probably have to wait some more before stating anything more concrete about its performance, right?

This is a good q uestion. I'm unsure. The people in the OT might have the best answer.

As for why the game isn't on Android in Europe, that's also a good question given it's charting decently on iOS in the US now so it seems like something compatible with the West.

Nirolak, considering how many times DQM:SL has been downloaded (was it 3+ millions?), how would you rate the current performance, relying so heavily on events?
In Japanese social games this is pretty common as a whole. After Puzzle & Dragon, the top 10-15 slots tends to fluctuate heavily based on what games are having events. However, while I haven't studied this heavily, I do feel that most of the big hitters stay a little higher than the low-30's when out of the event cycle. I would expect something more like the 20's.

At 3 million downloads, Dragon Quest would still be pretty low for a top tier social game. For comparison, Puzzle & Dragons is at 25 million downloads, and Quiz RPG is at 17 million. If it isn't that far past 3 million, this might go some ways to explain why it has trouble stabilizing in the off season, and were I Square Enix, I would work on acquiring more users so my baseline sales were higher instead of just my whales spending me to the top during events. Dragon Quest is a very broad audience title so it shouldn't be impossible to attract a very broad audience.

Instead, for Agito, we probably have to wait some more before stating anything more concrete about its performance, right?

Yeah, it's still pretty early. Agito isn't shooting up to the top like DQM and it doesn't have a massive amount of downloads, so I suspect it won't ever be a top 10 performer, but beyond that the real question to me is if it can stay in the top 50 or if it steadily falls off into oblivion. As a whole I suspect that, if successful, it would be more comparable to how Real Racing is for EA where it sits in the middle area of the top 100, but does a decent business overall. Real Racing's the kind of game EA notes as a money maker in earnings reports, but doesn't share actual revenue numbers for like they do with The Simpsons: Tapped Out since it's decidedly on a lower tier.

This is also why I mention the international market as an interesting one for this game. If they can't get into the top of the Japanese charts, which seems quite likely, the best argument for making a higher production value mobile game like this would be "We can make a lot of money in aggregate around the world, even if we're not a top performer in any individual market." Otherwise there's not much benefit over the other titles on this list which all look like they probably cost quite a bit less.

Edit: Well that school girl maid angel dating fetish game thingy (School Girl Strikers) looks like it has pretty high production values too actually. That said I doubt either of these games cost an especially large amount overall, but I would still think Agito is probably one of their most expensive mobile projects.

I'm all for a little more insight on that segment of the market, since I don't really have any other means of getting exposed to it. I think we're at a point where we need to accept that this is the course Japanese gaming is taking. Surely we are reaching a point where a mobile release might affect the sales of conventional releases. The notable announcements and the larger trends will definitely give us a clearer picture of what they're buying and playing, which is ultimately what these threads are about.
