Huh; do you have Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/Platinum final numbers? I'm curious to see how B2W2 has compared to the iterations more similar to it.

[NGB] Pokémon Yellow (Nintendo) {1998.09.12} - 851.091 / 2.294.065
[NGB] Pokémon Crystal (Nintendo) {2000.12.14} - 707.580 / 1.871.307
[GBA] Pokémon Emerald (Pokémon Co.) {2004.09.16} - 643.987 / 2.197.017
[NDS] Pokémon Platinum (Pokémon Co.) {2008.09.13} - 967.675 / 2.603.358

[NDS] Pokémon Black 2 / White 2 (Pokémon Co.) {2012.06.23} - 1.618.621 / 2.990.161

Dengeki Weekly Software Highlights:

Pokemon X won first place for 4 consecutive weeks with 138K units sold to consumers this week.

  • 74K units of Pokemon X (1.529 million LTD)
  • 64K units of Pokemon Y (1.434 million LTD)

Best-selling 3DS games:

  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 3.4 million LTD
  • Pokemon X + Y - 2.963 million (first four weeks LTD)
  • Monster Hunter 4 - 2.93 million LTD

Wii Party U took second place with 71K units.

  • About 50% of Wii Party U's 70,556 sales came from the Wii U Family Premium Set hardware bundles (¥32,800 to ¥34,800, Black or White)
  • Wii U sold 38,904 this week, so the bundle deals made up the vast majority of its weekly sales (around 95% bundle ratio)
  • Original Wii Party performance: 2.35 million LTD (sold to Japanese consumers). Because of this, pay close attention to Wii Party U performance to see if it has legs like its predecessor

The debut game Little Battlers eXperience: Wars from Level-5 was also in the Top 5 software sold this week.

  • First week sell-through percentage was 55%
  • With a sell-through figure of 47,044, we can assume Little Battlers eXperience: Wars had ~85,500 initial shipments to retailers

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Dengeki?
Dengeki is a website (it's also a brand of magazines / a book and manga imprint) that publishes sell-through Japanese sales data tracked by ASCII Research Institute, courtesy of ASCII Media Works, Inc. Every week they publish a nationwide snapshot of Japanese video game sales with the cooperation of more than 3,000 specialty game stores and convenience store chains all across Japan.

Why post Dengeki numbers when you have Media Create / Famitsu in the OP?
1) Unlike any other tracker, Dengeki gives us software numbers for Top 50 sales so we can track low-performing titles for a longer period of time
2) Unlike the others, Dengeki gives us total software sales for every platform, so we can track the relative health of platform software ecosystems
3) Dengeki is a respected sales tracker with 5 consecutive years of being reported each week in GAF threads

Is Dengeki less accurate than Media Create / Famitsu?
1) Dengeki is just as accurate as Media Create and Famitsu. Just because each tracker has quirks and natural deviations from the others doesn't mean one is inherently superior to the rest.
2) Dengeki is the tracker most unfamiliar to GAF / the public, and sometimes people confuse lack of dissemination with inaccuracy in sales figures
3) The amount of retail stores Dengeki tracks is similar to Media Create and Famitsu

Here are the differences between the trackers:

Media Create:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Media Create Co., Ltd.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 20 software sales with numbers
+ Top 50 software sales without numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sometimes presents sell-through figures
+ Releases first (at the same time as Famitsu)
+ Nintendo uses these numbers in their investor presentations
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not track download cards
- Does not provide software sales figures past the Top 20

Famitsu:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from Enterbrain, Inc.
+ Tracks about 3,600 retail stores / chains
+ Top 30 software sales with numbers
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through ranges for all titles
+ Has the most historical data available for GAFfers
+ Tracks download cards
+ Releases first (at the same time as Media Create)
- Does not distinguish between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Does not report total software sales

Dengeki:
+ Nationwide Japanese sales data from ASCII Research Institute.
+ Tracks more than 3,000 retail stores / chains
+ Top 50 software sales with numbers
+ Top 3 software sales per platform
+ Total software sales per platform
+ Total hardware sales per platform
+ Sell-through figures for a few titles
+ Distinguishes between 3DS and 3DS LL
- Inconsistent data reporting over the years
- Does not track download cards
- Releases nearly 24 hours after Media Create / Famitsu

Nice to see ife in the wii u :) What this really shows me is there is interest in the system but people are just waiting for the best value before they pick one up which i cant blame them for lol.

Nintendo needs to be working on New Super Hotcakes U 3D.

I just don't see it holding any momentum next week. Expecting under 20k.

When do we get some pictures of lines for VitaTV? Just one person will be twice the number for the 2000 revision.

That's pretty disappointing for Tears to Tiara II, I thought the demo was pretty decent and it deserved to do a bit better than that

I just remembered there's the Monster Hunter 4 3DS bundle coming out today. Probably won't have much of an impact, but that's at least one thing to look forward before next week's charts.

Pokemon Black/White are still the best in the series so far so I'm glad to see their dominant sales position remain ;)

The fanbase is probably annoyed that it isn't originally a PC hentai game like the first one.

Also, why is Danball Senki not dead yet? You disappoint me Japan.

{2013-10-31} [PS3] Tears to Tiara II: Haou no Matsuei - 24.621 / NEW

This title is the winner of this week, what an impressive second week hold!

For example, the PS3 and PS Vita versions of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 have already outsold their previous entry. The cheaper price probably helped a lot, and maybe the release date (October instead of July)? I don't know, I'm not into Baseball.

Second week for 2013 edition vs lifetime sales for 2012 edition:

[PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 (Konami) {2013.10.24} - 60.157 / 144.260
[PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012 (Konami) {2012.07.19} - 134.431

[PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 (Konami) {2013.10.24} - 32.139 / 70.121
[PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012 (Konami) {2012.07.19} - 82.791

[PSV] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 (Konami) {2013.10.24} - 13.339 / 35.735
[PSV] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012 (Konami) {2012.07.19} - 32.765

Tsutaya mentioned Japan Series, which happened last week.

07./05. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V <ACT> (Take-Two Interactive Japan) {2013.10.10} (¥7.770) - 33.929 / 471.522 <80-100%> (-31%)

Another great hold. Grand Theft Auto V was expected to be big, but not that big. Usually a title like this would be more front-loaded. This game is having strong legs in addition with a very high first week sales.

It's already over Dragon's Dogma last known total: 470.141 (Famitsu).

Japanese 3rd party support is moving towards smartphones and Wii U and Vita are the two platforms to best catch ports from that sector. As we can see from L5's strategy most of those smartphone games can (and will) easily be ported to all traditional game devices but U and Vita are the ones that come equipped with both a touchscreen and gyro.

L5 are leading the way for smartphone games with console appeal anyway, DQ9 had perfect touch controls for an RPG (I wonder why SE doesn't use that control scheme for 1~8) and Layton works perfectly well on smartphones too.
I dont know if it will become a trend, but wiiu already got a port of an smartphone game in togabito no senritsu. Which is a damn fine game, i must say. The problem with that approach is that those companies are only going to do the minimum and release on the eshop, with no changes whatsoever, so, wiiu retails presence is not going to get much different than it is now because of it, nor it is going to be a huge changer, since theres already cheaper ways to play those games.

That is, if the companies start to port their games, right.

And looks like Mario advertising already started. Maybe that will help the system to stay above awful levels. Also, zelda got an up of 32÷. Its nice. It shows some people waited on it, unfortunately, looks like this is the only game that got a bump.

I wonder if people on this board are too caught up in games when discussing sales. It seems to me image and hype are the bigger factor. How much is Nintendo advertising in Japan? I just walked out of a Best Buy. The Wii U section is appealing with its selection of games, bundles and prices, but of course it was barren. On the way out I saw a dad buying 3 (yes 3) PS3s, and someone else buying a 360 game. I think Nintendo needs a big marketing push that makes the Wii U more desirable to the 18+ audience that Sony and Microsoft have, because at the moment people don't even seem to care or know that it exists.

The biggest selling point for the WiiU are Nintendo games, those generally aren't very appealing to the MS/Sony crowd.

Tamagotchi would've been better without a demo. The promotional videos are all amazing, the demo appalling.

This is going to take a while... 2015 most likely.

Around 15 million by the end of this year, and I don't see 3DS selling another 5 million in 2014, even with the help of Dragon Quest XI and a new redesign?

3DS is running out of system-sellers in Japan, it's time for Nintendo to offer SE some incentive, get that FF up and running.

I thought we had all concluded that Puzzles and Dragon Quest is going to be multiplatform on smartphones anyway.

What, a Western game selling even better than a well-known Japanese franchise? Ok, Yakuza is no Monster Hunter, but that's quite impressive, really.

Looks OK for eXstetra, though I'm not expecting huge numbers. Not surprised it's selling better on Vita either, though the gap seems smaller than for Conception II (maybe because it's an original game?).

I'm surprised that retro-collection game is selling that well. I know it's just %, but I was expecting that thing to have 40% sellthrough... after 4 days, not from Day 1.

You're really setting yourself up for disappointement if you're looking forward to an FF on 3DS or rather on anything rather than the next gen consoles. The only new and original exclusive I see 3DS getting from Square is BD2.

You don't see TWEWY 2? I see at least a 3DS exclusive before an iOS version later down the road.

I was wondering this the other day, is DQ XI targeted to the 3DS? Also i thought the DS remakes of the traditional FF games did well, what's holding up Square Enix for doing the same for the 3DS?

The only thing FF I could see is maybe the Type-0 subseries and even that looks happily smartphone bound instead of handhelds.

Bravely Default is a nice alternate though. It doesn't have the name brand but it's pretty much the most Final Fantasyish game in the ways that matter to me. So much moreso than the mainline games at this point too.

I don't see TWEWY until KH3 is out of the way.

Why? That would contradict the nature of that type of game.

TWEWY was outsourced to Jupiter with only some involvement by SE staff. Therefore it was easy to do on the side since obviously as director and character designer Nomura can work on more than one project at the same time.

I don't see why a sequel would be different in that regard. The real question is, is 3DS the best platform for it since KH3D didn't do too great and the touch gameplay would maybe work better on a smart device.

KH3D underperformed in Japan but it did okay in the US. Same with TWEWY I believe.

Article about next-gen development cost and Japan:

http://sankei.jp.msn.com/west/west_economy/news/131109/wec13110912000001-n1.htm

I can't read Japanese but using the Google translation they apparently say average development cost for the PS3 was around 100m yen ($1m) per title or something like this if I understand correctly. They also expect PS4 development to be higher than PS3.
Just how much is that, the Mega Drive, PC-Engine and Saturn had their own fanbases but saw a lot more support.

That Medarot DUAL number would be higher than what the previous two mainline games sold, and this game doesn't have a tie-in manga.

A lot of developers there are making yore zed low end PS2 titles.

Also given its Japan you have scenarios like the average programmer salary being 85% that of a janitor: http://www.worldsalaries.org/japan.shtml

In comparison in the West programmers are often incredibly expensive, so you're looking at quite a cost base disparity that likely applies to most if not all roles on a project.

Just look at those expectations a few posts above...20K sales expectations for the Year of the Amazoness RPG at 6,090 JPY ($61.42)? That's a gross profit of $1,228,480 and a net of $600,000 (50% to publisher is just a random estimate)...apparently this is a figure that Arc System Works is happy with.

But are niche and mid-tier retail developers (aka. not Square Enix, Sega Sammy, Capcom, Nintendo, Konami, Namco Bandai or Sony) going to transition over to the PS4 with those PS2-quality titles? Or are the expectations for PS4 too different than PS3 for niche Japanese developers to switch from PS3 / Vita (for retail titles)?

In the article they were talking about soaring development costs and the vicious cycle that accompanies it (companies produce "safe" titles to recoup extravagant development cost, take less risks as a result, and the sequel sells less than the predecessor). But as you pointed out, few companies in Japan are taking the "skyrocketing development costs" seriously.

Many have stopped caring about the latest and greatest graphics...for the sake of maintaining a strict budget.

I keep worrying that these companies have reached a plateau in terms of aspirations...i.e. they're not going to move onto the next iteration of consoles...and they'll stay behind on mobile, PS3 and handhelds where there is fully-realized, reduced expectations of where graphics must be.

When I imagine the "plateau" of mid-tier Japanese graphics, I think of Toukiden for the Vita...clearly a step up from the PS2 generation, but nowhere near graphically intensive...and perhaps inappropriate as a retail title for the PS4?

This ties into concerns about the health of the Japanese console market as a whole. With the Wii U doing incredibly poorly and the Xbox One setting itself up to fail (in terms of third-party relations), does this set the PS4 up to take the reigns from the PS3? Or is it filling a need that doesn't exist?
