I'm one of those people who can't stand an aged game, the only way you get me to is if you remake the game, I usually prefer remakes over their originals since it takes alot to screw up the experience for me. I don't even want a "3D" remake, just a remake period.

Link's Awakening is not aged. It looks awesome. There is literally nothing a remake can do except make it look worse.

Link's Awakening has aged like fine wine.

I've never owned a duck or a parrot, but I think the bond you can get with a dog or a cat is much different than those animals. You can't cuddle and play with them like you normally could with a dog or cat. Oh what the hell, just buy Nintendogs +cats and see how you like it. :lol

Ducks are certainly tastier than dogs (pekin-style duck > boshintang), perhaps there is a relationship here (the tastier it is, the less likely you will give a damn about creating a bond with him.)

I should taste cats and parrots for a full analysis, anyone knows a good recipe for cats?

I don't appreciate pixelated art as much as you guys, it's why I use filters when I play emulators, shoot me. :lol

I love dogs and I love eating them, there goes your theory. :lol

I even thought LA DX's introduction of limited colors was a decrease in quality compared to the gray scale of the original.

Damn! Well, a kitten is spared then.

I know I'm just restating the obvious, but doesn't the fact that it still plays DS games negate some of the need for a great launch lineup?

Nah you should try em anyway, I hear it taste nice, even though I would never be able to, for some odd reason I find it normal to eat dog meat but not cat.

Did that help the PS3?

To be fair with 3DS line-up Nintendo could release more 1st party games at day 1 but it was their decision not to.

I agree. It is clearly their decision to stagger their releases to avoid the deadly dry periods. Maybe they have learned from the recent years of the Wii.

That and give 3rd parties room to grow on their systems.

Iwata said pretty much exactly the same thing.

Nikkei said:
"It's important that you be able to supply software with no pause," said Iwata. "With the DS and Wii, following the titles that were released at launch, the momentum dropped when there was a gap in software releases. We're making plans so that this type of thing won't happen."

Regarding the 3DS equivalent of the DS' Brain Training, it wouldn't surprise me if it ultimately turned out to be a rather traditional title, especially if the 3D effect really does help the player judge distance.

Apples to oranges. Handhelds are by far the #1 type of system in Japan these days and the DS(i) is still selling boatloads in terms of both hardware and software.

You can't count on the old software to convince people that they need the new hardware, though. That would basically take a person who
*Does not already have a DS.
*Now sees a DS game they must have.
*Won't be satisfied with an older, cheaper model.
I can't imagine that's much of a group.

I could see some non-traditional titles filling that gap, too. What about some sort of gardening game, for instance? We know Miyamoto likes to garden.

Also, it'll be interesting to see what Brain Training 3 is like, since we know it's being worked on. I mean, the last two titles had you hold the system sideways, "book style." Seems that wouldn't be an option on the 3DS...

True, i wonder how this will work.

I already mentioned this in another thread, but i also wonder if the 3DS will see less stylus based games. Seeing that the bottom screen has touch screen (like the DS has) while the big selling point is the 3D screen, how will this work? Take the Layton games for example which only uses touch screen for gameplay. But if you want the 3D effects as well, do you need to switch focus between the screens "all the time" when solving a puzzle?

From what we've seen so far the touchscreen is used as a touchpad to move a cursor on the top screen.

I haven't played the Layton games so I can't speak for them specifically, but I have played DS games where the gameplay is controlled with the touch screen but the action is on the top screen. If it's something like moving around and pointing and such I don't see why you can't focus on the top screen while controlling on the bottom screen. Think of the touch screen as a mousepad, you don't keep your eye on how you move your hand when using a mouse, do you?

Andria Sang actually just put a Layton preview online:

To investigate areas of interest in the backdrops on the top screen, you make use of a new investigation tool. It works like notebook-like mouse pad that covers the 3DS's entire bottom screen. As you slide the stylus around on the bottom screen, you move a pair of goggles on the top screen. When you see a point of interest, you tap the spot. This actually ends up working just as well as directly pointing.

You guys doubting Nintendo's ability to get the mainstream market onboard... You do realize the moment they drop a traditional Mario title or Mario Kart, they're going to jump in really fast, right? The current version of the expanded audience on the DS won't prove so hard to get, which is why Nintendo is focusing on expanding its own audience by getting the PSP folks upfront.

If Sony appeared capable of producing a mainstream hit equivalent to a Mario, Mario Kart, or whatever the hell else Nintendo's people can come up with, it might be a concern.

Ah ok, i didnt think about this, thanks! :) All the DS games that i have tried so far (which admittingly isnt really THAT many) where the stylus has been used, have all been games where you had to see where you clicked to be able to play (games like Brain Training, Layton and Picross). But if the touchpad could be used kinda like a computer mouse, i can see that this will work indeed =)

So much to reply to here, let me begin:

Exactly, I think it's more fair to judge the 3ds launch based on Nintendo's strategy this time around(aka comparing launch windows, not just launches then nothing for months). re-take a look at What is coming out before May: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/software/spring2011.html

You think of March: Zelda, April: Steel Diver, May: Pilotwings. Suddenly things look up.

Although the strong 3rd party support right out of the gate is very encouraging. Not to mention that the PSP2 is a no-show and will launch after the 3DS.

PSP2 doesn't need to show up in Japan just yet. I'm noticing a trend on specialist retailer blogs where they say they are unsure about 3ds(shipment to non-major stores, etc) and are going to be pushing PSP instead, where there is profits assured. This is the 3rd party gamer market Nintendo wants to go after.

Add in the fact that the PSP bundles are technically equivalent to semi-price drops and you have a very interesting situation.

I don't think the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad or Android are huge threats to handheld gaming in Japan.

A tendency on neogaf to just look at things through the western market view. Smart phones are not a threat and won't be till they gain a stronger user share(docomo is starting to transfer the main line to smart phones later this year, but 2012 is really the year to talk about this)(I can go get sources for user share if you wish)

But, in Japan, everyone and thier brother talks about mobile social cell-phone gaming and the effect it has on mainstream gaming/casual gaming. This is more of a threat to discuss.

Not the same thing at all. Touchscreen brings accessibility via a very natural and intuitive input system, what does 3D bring to the table other than "oh cool, it's in 3D"?

In every single 3ds as a standard, Camera, Gyroscope, Always on communication, that's the real new 3ds power.

6/10 Wii games....when was the last time that happened ?
SaGa 3 bombed as expected.

Square's DS sales are really going into the toilet.

FF3 -> FF4 was a 40% drop.

FF4 -> 4WoL was a 70% drop.

KH358 -> Re:Coded was 60% drop.

SaGa2 -> SaGa3 looks like it's going to be another 50%+ drop.

DQ is the only brand which continues to do well for S-E on the DS, but I wonder if DQMJ2P will see another huge drop.

.

Well to be fair, how long can these retailers continue doing that. Regardless of what anyone else thinks, it was a mistake to allow the 3DS to launch first in Japan before the PSP2.

This week's #6 sold about as much as last week's #10. I think that tells us enough. :)
