Square Enix's Vita support is just perplexing. They were there at launch with a cross-gen Lord of Arcana sequel and a low budget original game. I feel Lord of Apocalypse did as well a sequel to Lord of Arcana could, but Army Corps bombed. Then they tried to ignore that Final Fantasy X HD was a thing they announced. Then that came out and sold well. Then Vita became the phone port factory. I guess Million Arthur is doing okay, Chaos Rings flopped and TBA on the other things. Then they announced SaGa is happening. It's such a weird lineup of content that's all over the place in origin, and stuff you'd think would make sense to release (DQH, DQ phone ports, FFDim, FF phone "remakes", etc. + prediction: Dissidia and FF XII HD) isn't being released.

Square Enix support for handhelds has been erratic. Of course 3DS got the best games, especially because of Dragon Quest games, but their support to both handhelds pales in comparison to what they have done to DS and PSP, and their games outside Dragon Quest and KH3D have been mostly experiments instead of games they'd likely release for such platforms (games out of their franchises and established genres, rhythm games, MH-like without polish, etc).

At this time, it looks like SE is just using handhelds to generate some money to fund their mobile endeavours. I can see them releasing less and less traditional games as their mobile games start generating more money. They will likely retain FF, DQ, Eidos and can the rest.

Right now it looks like Sony has buried Vita in Japan, too. I was actually surprised Persona 4 DAN is getting a wide-release LE handheld since the last game that got one of those was FF X|X-2 HD in 2013.

It became clear in 2014. They just released what they were already developing (Freedom Wars and Oreshika). Since PS4 initial success, they clearly abandoned all the rest worldwide. It is clear that Sony is pushing other companies to make PS4 versions of their games (even with late ports of Japanese niche games), and I wouldn't doubt that things like Type-0 on PS4 weren't incentivated by Sony higher-ups.

There wasn't any hype for ALBW. When holidays rush died it died too.

MM 3D was a Saturday release by the way, OOT 3D and ALBW released on Thursday.

Why was there no hype for ALBW anyways =(? It was a brilliant game imo too and the first 2D Zelda in a while.

I think despite the nostalgia that people have for the 2d series, more people just want 3D Zelda today. Of course, we would need to see a brand new Zelda on 3DS to really confirm considering how Skyward Sword did as well.

It does make me really sad they probably won't go 2d for a long time, especially as their handhelds get more powerful

I think Tabata did address that. It seems like the answer is the same as FFXV. Now that's not to say that Type-0 could not have been ported to Vita, obviously it could since the original was on PSP, but I think this is really a matter of technical efficiency. If their development process for a game allows it to be on both PS4 and XB1 easily, then there's little reason not to release it on both in markets where it would sell anyway.

Even if it does like 500k on PS4 and 100k on XB1 for example, the minimal effort makes it a net benefit for them. On the other hand, if they wanted it on Vita, there would be more specific effort put into developing that, and even if a Vita version sells more in Japan, it might not be worth that extra effort. That's how I see it from S-E's perspective. The development process they are using for Type-0 HD is clearly not easily compatible with the Vita or it would have happened.

I honestly think you are overstating SE's commitment to the XB1 if it wasn't for the FFXV demo I seriously doubt SE would consider it worth the time to develop the XB1 edition. I think SE expected the XB1 to Dominate in Europe and the UK again and as time goes on to show it's not I doubt they bother to port anything to XB1 that is going the to sell them less the 1 million copies on the platform world wide.

PS4 YTD > PSV YTD

2015 - Year of the PS4

Well in the beginning some were saying that ps4 was DOA, others were saying it wouldn't sell until some significant titles dropped in Japan... It's starting to appear that the latter view does have some merit, at least it's leaning that way slowly

So...seeing Xbox One drop to the hundreds, makes me beg the question. How low does Xbox One have to sell for MC and Famitsu to stop tracking it?

Wonder what boost that will give it? 200+ consoles for next week?

Sumikko Gurashi passes 100,000 (https://twitter.com/sumikko_3ds/status/568252977930043393). I wonder if they included those Famitsu digital 'sales'? :-O

They have already shipped 100k a month or so ago. Famitsu has it at 99k this week, so they might have included downloads, or just this week's sales.

Perplexing? To me, it just seems the usual SQEX support on a platform the company doesn't really want to support but on which there must be some presence because of reputation, relationship with Sony and whatever. Also, it seems that PSV came a bit later, when SQEX was shifting heavily towards mobile, was already investing some efforts in the 3DS and was setting things up for the new generation of systems. I don't think those games made much sense on PSV, to be honest.

Every company's support pales in comparison to what they have done to DS and PSP. It's not only SQEX, it's everyone in the industry. SQEX was using handhelds to generate money to fund other platforms' games back then as well; DS saw a lot of shovelware (relative to SQEX production, of course), such as a huge amount of FF spin-offs (many of which were quite forgettable), terrible Mana games, and a lot of "experiments" as well.

Also, you might want to rephrase: "Square Enix support for handhelds has been erratic." into "Square Enix support for 3DS has been overall good given the period, while support for PSV has been pretty terrible, basically non-existent".

PS4 Vs Vita YTD sales could actually be interesting to watch :p

Good job Japan. Buy that Majora's Mask.

Should outsell the N64 version within a few weeks lol.

You sure about that? The first week sales are notably lower, so it's behind at the moment. I mean it'd be great to see, since the N64 version's sales potential was stifled somewhat, but I wouldn't be so confident.

If the game has the usual Zelda legs, it should break the 500k mark without problems. It's also supply constrained, so this should help.

It still up in the air what PS4 has in the latter half of the year. So far I'm guessing FF Dissidia, DDO, Hot Shots Golf, Gundam, Persona 5, MGSV and Tales of Zestiria f. Tekken 7 could make it.

almost certainly, considering how I think it will catch Wii U's LTD by the end of the year/early next year.

FF15 as well right? PS4 seems to be selling okay I guess. Guess there is still some feeble life left in the home console market it seems.

Yeah, 2014 was the last year of growth for PSV.

That's a weird statement when the best selling Zeldas in Japan in the past decade were 2D Zeldas.

This is true. I wonder if it's possible then that those titles somewhat poisoned the 2d Zelda well in Japan considering Spirit Track's dropoff from Phantom Hourglass. Otherwise, it just seems strange then that ALBW performed like it did.

I don't see Tekken and Dissidia hitting consoles this year. Are we even getting Dissidia in arcades this year?

That's my optimistic outlook. It wouldn't be up to MM N64 though, which sold >600k.

Eh. Before the DS games was Minish Cap which sold <250k. You could say the DS games actually boosted 2D style Zelda as ALBW is still well over that. I'm still shocked at how badly Minish Cap performed.

Terrible games and forgettable spin-offs on DS that sold more than the "great support" on 3DS. If you think 3DS support has been "overall good given the period", it is your problem. For me, if you exclude Dragon Quest, it is bad, and has nothing to do with the fact that some companies release less games now than during DS generation.

It won't pass the Wii U's LTD by then. But why is this even a thing? It will pass the Wii U at some point, you'd imagine.

The PS4 is just coming up on one year in Japan. The WiiU has been out a little over a year longer. Shouldn't we be comparing the PS4's numbers to the WiiU's first year numbers rather than LTD at this point? I think PS4 is ahead of WiiU in first year sales, IIRC.

No, the PS4 has sold 1,118,805 units in it's first 52 weeks now. The Wii U sold 1,219,474 in that time.

Then came the Wii U's second Christmas, and by week 57 it was at 1,576,701. So it's going to take the PS4 a while to overtake.

Yeah SE's 3DS support is far from good, especially in comparison to last gen. What probably hurts more than anything is SE's clear reluctance to develop new IPs outside of mobile. Even Bravely Default started as an FF spinoff.

Don't we still have another week before its 52 weeks? I thought the PS4 released in Japan last year around Feb 20? So wouldn't there be another week of sales to be added to the PS4s number before calling it 52 weeks?

EDIT: Yep, it was released on 2/22. So we don't have numbers for its first 52 weeks yet.

So, it was released in week 8/2014. This week is 7/2015, making this the 52nd week it has been featured in the charts.

Sure, the first week wasn't a full week, but it was the same with Wii U, both were launched Saturday.

It was on the Playstation blog right? Then S-E released their own press release and it said PS4/XB1 or something. Really terrible communication failure.
The way these blog posts seem to work is that the third party writes the body of the post, but the various regions social media teams write the title (because you often see the same PR piece on the US and EU PlayStation blogs with different titles). The body of the Type-0 post never mentioned the platform, so whoever was manning the US blog at the time (while the blog manager was at E3) must have assumed it was for Vita and posted it in a rush to get all the E3 news up.

The funniest thing about Type-0 HD and Vita is still the way it was announced during E3. Sony was so sure it was a Vita game! Square Enix had other plans! Roflmao. :(

The reveal thread was pretty funny.
It was the quickest shout of joy followed by a massive cold water shower.

SQEX support has a lot to do with the fact that everyone, including SQEX, is shifting resources to mobile, and is supporting less and less traditional devices. It has also to do with the fact that SQEX, as a company, is not really able to diversify its portfolio in a way to exploit each platform peculiarities. A lot of DS games bombed as well, a sign that while the platform was surely able to deliver best-sellers, some games did not really fit it (because of various reasons, such as unfortunate release dates, technical limitations and so forth).

3DS support comes also from the fact that, after 2008, basically all DS games outside KH and DQ bombed (and it's not a coincidence that 3DS had a quasi-mainline KH from the start -DS entries sold incredibly well worldwide- and DQ entries one after the other).

Many DS FF spin-offs sold really well (FFXII:RW at 500k+, FFCC:RoF at 380k+), alongside with remakes (FFIII at 1m, FFIV at 600k+) but many others underperformed (FFTA2 at 290k, FF:4HoL at 200k, Chocobo's Dungeon + at 70k+).

If you look instead at non-FF, non-DQ and non-KH games, you can see how many games bombed or underperformed, or sold really few copies: Heroes of Mana (98k), Front Mission 2089 (45k), Sigma Harmonics (59k), Blood of Bahamut (103k), SaGa 2 (170k), SaGa 3 (77k), Lufia (43k). The huge numbers of releases SQEX put on DS screams a lot "DS selling like hot pancakes, we HAVE to be there!" and while some IPs did incredibly well (DQ), others were so-and-so (FF) or sold well elsewhere, at least in Japan (KH).

Then, you have some successful projects such as Chrono Trigger (500k) and Nanashi no Game, that became a cult-hit; and some projects that might have bombed back then, like TWEWY, but we will never know.

Furthermore, SQEX had A LOT of low-budget / shovelware games, such as kid games with licensed IPs such as Snoopy and Winnie the Pooh, or forgettable puzzle-games (Yosumin) and training / software games (Maji de Manabu) that sold a really low amount of copies.

On the other hand, 3DS is getting way less support, but more concentrated on what could sell on the platform, considering also that most of the company is now targeting mobile and high-spec home platforms (which require more manpower with respect to, say, PS3, which was not even much supported by SQEX during early and mid-DS era). Bottom line is, 3DS support is of course not as good as it was on DS, but it is not bad considering the context; and, of course, it is quite extreme to put 3DS support along with PSV ("SQEX handhelds support is terrible") because on one hand you have a reasonable support (which is also quite successful), and on the other hand you have a support that is the minimum effort possible to say "ok, we are supporting the platform to please Sony / shareholders / whatever".
