Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Not shocking considering how much blind faith is going around when MSFT has shown NOTHING.

Come on now, think and get the systems with the games you want to play. Right now, the next Xbox hasn't warranted a lick of anticipation.

At least we have one pseudo next gen platform out in WiiU and the PS4 already unveiled.

We'll see about that. "It works for me so why does anyone else have an issue with this" is a poor stance to take.
I do have friends it will affect that live in places with crummy Internet. I don't see the point of it anyway but it probably won't affect my decision. What is the benifit for them to go always online? Is it to ban second hand games?

The thing about always online is, how does that benefit me? Why does the system have to be always online? What does it do that's so compelling that I have to be connected? I can't for the life of me think of any possible reason I would give two shits about.

Until the system bombs at PS3 levels, yeah. MS is in for a rude awakening if they think everyone is online-enabled.

"bombing at PS3 levels" means "selling as good or better than anything but the PS2 and Wii". I don't think PS3-level sales will do all that much to kill it, it would need to be a from-Genesis-to-Saturn fall.

Which I don't think it will be. I think if this is true MS has decided they've found a Gamecube-to-N64 level niche of extreme profit. And they're probably right, given the 20M+ Live Gold customers.

Orthy is a douche and pretty much confirms the always online.

I'm out. Mostly because of always online, but also because Orthy is super douchy about it and I will assume that is how the rest of the Xbox team feel about it.

Kaz...please accept me back into the flock. I have seen the error of my ways...

OP, include these earlier tweets, too:

What a load of sh!t.

This is what I see happening next-gen:

Except MS is doing it all by themselves apparently.
And what he said should be a new meme for the new-gen

Is there any possibility that forcing a game to always be online or not is just an option that's open to devs/pubs? I mean I can't imagine why MS would demand every single game not be able to be played offline, but I can see them making it an available option if someone wants their game to be like that.

I'm online-enabled. Still not buying it. If im gonna be forced into online drm, STEAM IT IS! Cheap deals and upgradeable hardware ftw.

Im not paying premium dollars for a closed platform where i dont own anything because not only do i need the internet, i need MS servers on the other end.

I'm an expert

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
Don't know about Janesville, WI, but a lot of college students live in Blacksburg, VA. The kind that would be the prime 360 demographic.

Not after they hear of this! They'll be outraged!

So it's real?

Well fuck.

Also, that guy is getting yelled at by his boss once he founds out...

He's not good with Consumer Relations. Let's hope for Microsoft sake that he's better as a Creative Director.

Honestly I have absolutely no idea what the benefit of always online is. It could be an anti-piracy DRM thing, but really, I have no clue.

So dumb. There's basically no value in me connecting my console to the internet. I don't play multiplayer. I have extremely rarely bought DLC or arcade games. I certainly don't need the stupid thing connected all the time, and for what? Ads? No, I'm not running out to eat at McDonald's or to buy the latest flavor of Mountain Dew.

My 360 doesn't need to be always connected. As it stands now, it's usually just always off.

I can't wait for the inevitable "In hindsight, always online was a bad idea. But who knew? Hindsight is 20/20 I guess!"

Bookmark this post.

"Honestly, the fact that nobody could use The New Xbox for a week after every major game launch was merely proof that we underestimated the demand for new exciting gaming experiences."

Sony is a truly international company while MS is really mostly a US operation. They know their products can and will be used in places without reliable internet.

It benefits the publishers and Microsoft, which indirectly benefits most consumers if it means they're more profitable.

I'm not justifying it, but that's why they are pushing for it.

So...if I decided I don't want/can't afford internet in my house anymore, Xbox Durango won't play games? Really?

Dear Sony,
Thanks for making a game machine and not a media hub microtransaction-filled game machine with laggy Minority Report controls, that requires an internet connection to work.
Sorry I haven't supported you so much since PS2. Count on me giving thousands of dollars exclusively to you, and none of it going to Microsoft. Win-win for you.
Love, me.
