MultiVersus has seen a drastic decrease in the number of daily players that has seen its peak player count on Steam drop more than 99% since launch.

The game enjoyed an extremely successful launch, with a peak of more than 143,000 players on Steam on day one, rising up to 153,433 the following day.

A month after its launch, Warner Bros stated that over 20 million players had already downloaded and played the game, suggesting a strong player base on which to build.

Since then, however, the daily peak player count has been steadily dropping, to the extent that this week it dipped below 1000 for the first time, according to SteamDB, hitting a peak of 986 on Monday.

This marks a drop in daily peak player count of 99.3574% in less than seven months.

These smash clones suffer from a lot of development based on survivor bias. They are to worried to fix what the smash community cries about, but don't pay attention to the things that attracted the smash community in the first place.

You can criticize anything you want about Smash Bros., especially online play, but at the end of the day is by far the best of the list when you care about gameplay and "feeling". Play Smash Ultimate 1vs1 Competitive is like being in the last fight of your favourite anime.

Also, thanks to Nintendo characters it has an attraction difficult to match for anything else.

I think the game is fine as far as gameplay and whatnot goes. The biggest problem for the game is the fact that season 2 had no content drop outside of the christmas event. For those that are unfamiliar and just posting "iTs NoT sMaSh" but actually want more real insight. The events they have had are halloween and Christmas. These required stupid amounts of grind for some cool rewards. Then the other thing is that everything in the game is really expensive compared to other games. Gleamite is expensive in general and the only "deal" is basically the battle pass. Which also requires a stupid amount of grind compared to other games. Last Character that dropped was Marvin the martian. Now compare that to last season? like 5 characters dropped then.

I would say a combination of those things is the real reason the game has not sustained. I am playing another game that is in a similar content drought and suffering because of it.

Sport style multiplayer has a wicked hard time in todays market. Gamers don't want that anymore.

Honestly, of the smash-likes I played I felt it really wasn't bad and had a lot of potential. But, like a lot of the GaaS titles that failed or are failing, there just wasn't enough content. I mean, yeah, it's F2P, but you still need to keep people interested. It just never felt like they had a solid roadmap in place, still doesn't. The character release cadence was feeling pretty good there for a bit, but everything else was just.... not there.

free-to-play is not the answer if your game is just not that good.

If Project L proves to be mediocre upon release, it will have the same fate.

Yes... Smash is a party game, made for people to have fun and be easy to play by kids... has a lot of dumb anti competitive shit, but casuals are dumb and love that... to be competitive the game has to be giga trimmed down but that's not a issue as casuals never do that anyway.

The problem with multiversus is too much focus on being "competitive " e-sport, you can't even play 2 players from the same pc/console playing online... each one has to have it's own setup, there's no casual mode(with itens and other random shit to level the playing field) for the dumb dumb to have fun... there's no japanese waifu shit for the people that likes that kind of sad thing.

They spent resources bringing 2 useless characters from a niche 80's trash terror movie(wtf were they thinking), the balance of the game is based on twitter/reddit complains... The game plays great, but the developers don't have a clear vision of what brings the numbers.

It was never any good. It was only held up because it was one of the better Smash clones, and that's pathetic.

Games don't stay popular forever.
Multiversus had a good year and probably made more than enough money during that time. I'd say it was a success. And as long as they keep the servers up, the remaining population will continue to enjoy it.

Publishers should stop expecting every game to have Fortnite's success and longevity.

More like games as a job. Never found fun on these Gaas.

Individual taste is a different matter. If you look at the GAAS that succeed in todays market, they're almost never sports styled games. The market shifted massively over the last ~5 years.
 
Loved the characters and animations so much that I really wanted to like the game but it just felt so horrible to play. That along with all the on-screen chaos made it easy to lose track of what was going on. It's always been in the back of my mind with all the GaaS shutting down this year.

Played it a couple of times, it was alright... Main gripes:

1. Unlocking characters takes way too long (I hate the F2P model)
2. No ranked mode

it's just a worse Smash Bros.
it's always hard to release a game that's so extremely inspired by another, but then be not as good in many aspects.

because it's so easily comparable, why would anyone play this over Smash? especially if the majority of the people that like this kind of game do have a Switch and can play this better version there

leaving only casuals, and casuals leave games quick if it isn't their main mp title

I never got the hang of Smash, but surprisingly I enjoyed Multiverse and played it for about 3-4 weeks. It was only fun until you faced some very good people. Since I'm not that good, and didn't want to spend a lot of time, I was out of there. And the first Season pass was a joke and there was also hardly and rarely new Content.

15 bucks just to buy a new costume for your character. No thanks. I'm thinking more along the line of $2.50. Maybe 5 at most if I really liked the character and was desperate enough.

I had fun the first few days until the sweaters became insane in the game and killed all the fun

Exactly my experience. It was fun for a bit, even though I'm not into Smash style games, but it wasn't the type of game I wanted to try to get really good at.

Kinda sad that we need the servers to stay up to enioy so many games.

I still play it daily but it's gonna die. The last character they added was nearly four months ago.

I need someone to help me grind the 500 co-op matches to get the trophy before it fucking dies, I have all the others.
 
Smash had a platform with an audience for it.

PC does not have a long-term audience for a game like Smash Bros, which requires a platform identity, nostalgia, and integration to sell long-term.

This is also why PSASBR failed, because half of the identity of the characters fighting each other were not relevant because the ones that were Sony had no rights to them, or they were third-party drop-ins you could play on other consoles. That works for gust characters but not the bees in the knees. They also cut corners on the production.

The best you can hope for these games is a year or two of good metrics, which is what this game did, but now the novelty and the hype is over. There's nothing to attach people playing going forward.

Is it me or is it always Warner Bros. is so egocentric, but it always falls short of Disney... Not even in its golden years was it the first place in its midst.

Speaking of the game... It's impossible to even compete with Smash bros.

BUGS BUNNY has more name recognition than all three of those characters. Popular characters isn't the issue. Someone upthread already pretty much covered it: some genres you simply can not replicate from scratch. There have definitely been SMASH competitors but you really aren't beating NINTENDO at their own game. . .literally. Look at how popular POKEMON is and how little lasting impression the far better TEMTEM has.

Mario and Pokémon tho are 2 IPs featured in Smash that are more recognizable than any DC IP these days.

Hey Hey Hey., watch out.. The best thing of PSASBR was the integration of Kat from Gravity Rush... That's why I bought it on Ps3.

Also, Kat was the best in that video game, she was the best character.

But without kat... I really wouldn't have bought the game.

I agree, though I will add that characters like Batman and Superman are no slouches in appeal versus Mario, Link, and Pikachu, but Smash Bros is a fun game with incredible flexibility. Hardcore players are finding new play-styles and strategies to exploit with its large array of unique playable gaming legends, and casuals have a large variable of randomness that can occur in every match with items on or off and stages doing their thing, while playing with characters we've grown to love and have been well honored and adapted to Smash Bros' core game.

The problem I have with Smash clones is that they only seem to be attracted by Smash's legendary roster, and its competitive scene, but turn a completely blind eye to the variety it offers to its larger fanbase getting a laugh at Sonic's spring board gimping Solid Snake off stage, but then Snake bombs himself back to safety, among many other details that make Smash what it is --very replayable. From the controls, to animation, to content, Smash is not cheap nor easy to replicate. It's a strong game at its core, before taking inspiration from the Marios and Zeldas for its fighter selection, items, stage selection, and move-sets, all of which it expertly adapts and balances.

I think the biggest mistake they made was trying to go for the EVO crowd and the party game fighter crowd at the same time. Cooldown timers in a platform fighter? Ugly red vs blue character shaders on by default? Making people fight in teams instead of FFA with their freinds? Limiting on screen characters to four? Taking forever to release bland new stages without many differences to how all the other stages played? Actually, now that I type all that out, I think their biggest mistake might have been IGNORING the party game fighter crowd.

There was a lot of good in this game, but it came with a lot of missteps as well.

Almost no one knows what TemTem is, it's not mass marketed, retailers are pushing it in your face, it's barely on TV if at all in terms of ads, and iirc it's steam exclusive.

Steam games are on PC, it's not a platform to forge an identity like proprietary hardware can, that's always been the case, that's why console gamers know little about computer gaming before 1999, and will take credit for things console devs took from computers and PC. You can associate games and identity with hardware, you can't do that with PC easily unless its a breakout hit in sales, or in a genre.

Or back in the day, associated with a tech advancement.

Consoles and handhelds don't have that problem, that's why a steam "competitor" to Smash or Pokemon won't work, just like a steam Forza or Uncharted competitior didn't work. It's that simple.

People want to simplify it as Nintendo having a magic something when that's not even the issue.
