Need a chill JRPG for the PS5

Evening boys.

So, after finishing Lies of P after 47 hours and almost tearing my hair out during the last 2 bosses in the process (Manus + nameless puppet) I need a palette cleanser, meaning, something not grimdark, chill, colorful, flashy and...kind of easy since I HAVE to take a break from the masochore bullshit for my own well being (fuxking game nearly broke me G'dammit 😁).

So, from taking a look around these appear to be my choices :

- Metaphor ReFantazio: just tried the demo, looks and plays good but, those graphics man, no AA whatsoever, it looks like a g'damned PS3 game running as-is on the PS5 - pixel crawling and shimmering are really bringing the beautiful GFX and art-direction down and it really bothers me.

- Persona 5 royal : apparently this is one of the best JRPGs ever made (?) and it can be found for as low as 25 Eurodollars, what I'm afraid of though is that, apparently, it's very long and time consuming and I don't know If I have 100+ hours to invest in it - Read a couple of opinions that many people dropped it mid-way due to how slow everything is, any truth to that?

- FF7 Rebirth: enjoyed 7remake and this apparently is more of the same, just that it's bigger better and more badass ®

- Shin megami Tensei V : I liked what I saw, thing is, last time I played a SMT title was the one on the PS2 (Nocturne?) and I remember it being ball breakingly hard after a certain point.

- Granblue Fantasy relink : This appears to be on the shorter side (which for me is a plus) with the endgame being something like online co-op MOHUN ?
From what I've seen though, this appears to be the more...MOE title out of them all - I really can't do lolli girls with squeaky voices any more, fuuccxxk that sheeeiiit...

Mind you, last time I touched a JRPG was with FF13 on the PS3 so I'm little rusty in knowing what's out there/what games are actually good etc etc.

So, how would you rate the titles I mentioned ? Which would be the best one for my case ?
Any other good recommendations ?

TLDNR : Need a JRPG that isn't overly long/doesn't outstay its welcome, is chill, not overly hard/frustrating AND doesn't feature lolli, MOE, yattaaaa !® shit.

Thanks 😉

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Ni No Kuni 1 or 2.

If you mean chill in terms of mechanics, not a JRPG, but try Diablo 3 or 4, lower the difficulty and just enjoy rolling through the enemy mobs.

And, yes, Persona 5 *is* a long game, but like the above example, you can set the difficulty to a level that combat stress is a non-factor, so you can focus more on chilling with your homies and increasing social link stats.

Visions of mana. I don't think you can get more chill than that.

Edit: Ok, the character design might not be up your alley.

If you haven't played it, I recommend Live a Live.
  1. Isn't overly long/doesn't outstay its welcome - you can finish this in 20-30 hours.
  2. Is chill - depends on the chapter/character
  3. Not overly hard/frustrating - 90% of the game does not require any grinding, but you might have to do some in the last chapter if you plan to skip the character specific dungeons.
  4. Doesn't feature lolli - there is none from what I remember

DQIII-HD, Star Ocean 2 Remake or Octopath 2 could be pretty chill if you want to try some newer 2D stuff. You also have the classic FFVI as well.

Also, P3 Remake and P4 Golden are amazing and in some ways better narratively vs P5. They are also shorter.

Ys X or Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D. Both games have multiple difficulty levels as well. Ys X is more action rpg oriented, but can be about 30 hours long. Haven’t started DQ yet, so I can’t speak on that yet.

Since when are Atlus games for relaxation? I understand that for some people BDSM sex is relaxation, but you can't do that to people :messenger_tears_of_joy:
I think P4 Golden perfectly fits the chill narrative. It’s much more fun and a bit less serious vs say 3 and 5 (which are also very good).

Rebirth for sure. Persona 5 also doesn’t need to be overly long, it only is if you are min maxing your stats and confidants. It’s also a game I wouldn’t exclusively play through.

Well, I wouldn't say so, you still need to watch the links. Plus fights is not easy, you'll also need an average of 70 hours to complete it and 80-90 hours if you, God forbid, get into the side quests.
As an example above - Ni no kuni, yes, you can relax there, the game has no complex mechanics, no difficult fights and it plays like a fairy tale. You can also add games from the Atelier series or Blue Reflection Second Light, almost zero load on the player.

You can put it on Easy and not worry about it fights for the most part. Overall story structure is pretty lax and Golden has a lot of time in general to complete Social Links. There is no need to get all of them to 100%, just couple that could be easily looked up.

i think out of all Persona games, P4G is the most laid back.

Rebirth is definitely very chill.
Since it covers the middle part of the original game it mostly focuses on the characters traveling around the world and the story is a bit more lighthearted and low stakes. There's stuff like a whole beach area, a cruise ship, a theme park and lots of minigames and IMO fun side activities spread around the world.

YS8 is pretty chill too. The tropical island setting is nice and it's more gameplay focused than other JRPG so a lot of your time is spend exploring these fun chill locations fighting monsters as you listen to catchy tunes

The combat system is good but aside from a couple of bosses it's forgiving enough that you can sort of kick back and have fun without having to be super focused at all time.

Persona 5 Royal is an absolute must. I had no problems with it being slow but some people feel like it is slow to start. This game is 50% a visual novel and 50% combat. And the game literally tells you "Take your time". I think it's chill and relaxing. Yeah, it can take 100 hours or more but I loved every second of it. I was playing it for 10 hours straight at times because I was so hooked on it.

Shin Megami Tensei V if you enjoy the combat in P5R and want something deeper and challenging. Persona is a spin off from SMT. I got to near the end of the original version in about 60 hours but with Vengeance release if you choose to play both routes then it will probably take much longer than Persona 5 Royal. I struggled with the difficulty at the start but afterwards I was doing well until near the end where there is a HUGE step up in difficulty. You can change the difficulty.

I assume if you haven't played P5 then you've not played P3 or P4. If you do play P5R then go play P3 Reload and P4 Golden. Both are amazing games. With P3 Reload it almost makes it the perfect version of the game. If you want to play as Female MC then get P3 Portable.

FFVII Rebirth is great. Enjoyed the story and combat. However, it's more open world and lots of "filler" shit. I enjoyed doing the side stuff for a while but eventually gave up and focused on the main story.

At this point OP has at least about 1,000 hours of quality RPGs to go through. 😉

I'll add my voice to those about Persona 5 Royal (yes, it's long, but it's pretty chill and the story is great), FFVII Rebirth (it's bigger and better, and a great time all around, you don't have to engage in the minigames at all if you don't like them (unlike what some folks here would have you believe). Metaphor isn't a bad choice either.

And I can also vouch for Ys8, which I actually finished yesterday. Great game, as chill as it gets, and the story is pretty entertaining :D

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Dragon Quest I guess, there's III 2D HD or XI.

Not an RPG, but if you like Zelda's exploration and a whacky story ala Kingdom Hearts, Infinity Nikki is both chill and addicting.

- Awesome visuals.

- Even better OST (top 10 this gen easily)

- Amazing exploration with great dungeons.

- Momo is a fun companion, unlike the generally annoying ones.

Just for the music and sound design this game is worth your time.

I finished Sea of Stars a few weeks ago. What a beautiful and chill (pretty easy) game. Took me roughly 30 hours, I did maybe 60% of the sidequests. Highly recommend.

I went from that to Metaphor, and holy fcking god what a shock lol.

I vote for rebirth.

Pretty easy on the default normal mode. If you skip a ton of side content it should not be overly long . Nice and cheerful, with a banger ost. And should be cheaper now on PS5 or even pc

So, since my last post I went to my local GameStop and snatched - wait for it - FF16 since it was on sale for 22 Eurotrons 😁😁
Yeah, it's not turned based, it's still grimdark but, fuck me has it sucked me in with its story and snappy combat, I'm 4 hours in and I'm really enjoying it, plus, no fucking lollies in sight so that's always a plus...

I get why final fantasy afficionados may dislike it since it pretty much goes against the characteristics that FF games go for (or, used to) but, since I'm no big FF fan I don't find it to be detrimental to my enjoyment.
Also, it's a very pretty game and the fact that it looks cleaner and runs much better on the Pro is a big plus.

Was also about to buy persona 5 Royal but some fucker had snatched the last copy so...
They had granblue fantasy relink in stock but I decided against it since that's also very action-y and I had already grabbed FF16.

Anyway, going to order PS5 royal from Amazon as a backup and I think that I'm pretty much settled for the next couple of months when it comes to JRPGs, next up is going to be Final fantasy 7 rebirth 😉

Thanks for all the suggestions boys, appreciate it and I'll bookmark this topic as to have another gander at the games you suggested.

Man, so many games, so little time, FML...

Cheers

I finished SMTV on PS5 last night and it was a slog. The last third of the game requires heavy grinding unless you switch to the free DLC super easy difficulty. The Vengeance campaign kinda fell short story wise for me and when the credits finally finished I ejected the disk, immediately deleted the game, and put it back on the shelf.

Found myself picking up P3 Reload for $25 today and am about to start it. I still have Soul Hackers 2 in my backlog. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

Smt vengeance is the best jrpg in years and it has a good demo. Check it out, you wont be dissapointed

Buy the OG Persona 5.

Better than Royal because it has a tighter, more concise story without all the extraneous BS which was later tacked on. For that reason, doesn't overstay its welcome.

Buy Persona 3 Reloaded. You get violence, depression, suicide, existentialism, bullying, isolation and death. Overall, chill game.

Very honourable mentions: Nier Automata and Nier Replicant. They're not turn based but, sweet baby Jesus, they are good.

If you liked 7 Remake then 7 Rebirth is gonna knock your socks off. It is a long game though.

I wanted to mention Dragon Quest 11 but it's also a good 60 hours I believe.. it's pretty colorful and charming so it might be worth checking out.

P5 has a ps4 version only and that runs at 30fps so it's a no-go for me brother since I game on an OLED.

I finished Automata back in the day on the PS4 and liked it, started Replicant last year on the PS5, played about 8 hours and dropped it...

Is P3 reloaded 30 or 60fps ?

I would recommend Chained Echoes as I found it to be a bit better vs Sea of Stars, but both are good.

I couldn’t find the patience to finish P5, but I finished SMT5. I’m more of a SMT person than Persona, even though I really enjoy the voice overs. I’d say FF7 Rebirth is very chill since it’s basically the king of nostalgia. Too bad Unicorn Overlord wasn’t on your list. That’s a very chill game.
