New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Movies in the Works at Warners, New Line

Warner Bros. and New Line are going back to Middle-earth, with the studio making a deal that will allow it to develop more Lord of the Rings movies.

The multi-year deal with rights holders Embracer Group AB allows Warners to develop features based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books and The Hobbit. Embracer Group, the Swedish gaming company, acquired the rights to LOTR film, games, merchandise, theme parks and live productions when it purchased rights holder Middle-earth Enterprises last year from The Saul Zaentz Company.

The move, announced during Warner Bros. Discovery’s investor call Thursday, comes as CEO David Zaslav seeks to assure Wall Street that Warners is very much in the franchise game as he harkens back to the 2000s glory days when the studio was minting money with Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Dark Knight trilogy. In November, Zaslav said he would like to make a deal with author J.K. Rowling for more Harry Potter, and initially floated the notion of a Lord of the Rings return.

If they keep to the story, scripts, characters, etc, and give us new stories and not a remake, maybe, just maybe. If it's a remake, fuck off. But considering Embracer Group spent some money on this, they're gonna go for a cash grab.

edit edit , looks like they won't go for a remake, but more or less spin off stories

“Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen. The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans. But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”

They are not going to find an equal to Jackson/Weta + LotR + cast + passion for what was likely decades working on those projects from start to finish. How about using that budget for green lighting dozens of new creative projects instead?

Heres the important part.
Warner Bros. film bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy signaled that they are not interested in a retread of what Jackson has already done
I dont see any director bold enough to attempt to adapt the main story like Jackson did anyway, so crisis averted?

Well, there is lots of ground to cover so… that is good… I guess?

I loved the 3 movies that they made. Maybe they will expand the universe with some additional ones or maybe a tv show

Nothing good will come of it because they don't have real interest in making them good.

This is a reflex of a putrit generation that doesn't know how to make their crap movies catch the audience so they go back to old well-know franchises and fuck them up. It's aways the same bullshit, it never changes.

I am good with no literature (particularly classic) or even genre fiction written before 2010 being adapted by any modern production studio or group. It simply won't be done right. Whatever they crank out will be inaccurate, toothless, and have that cheap made-for-TV feel like The Witcher or The Rings of Power.

Since Christopher Tolkien saw a few more of his father's Middle-earth stories published, they surely have a lot to draw from. The Children of Húrin, Beren and Lúthien, The Fall of Gondolin. I'd really like to see them hit the highs of The Lord of the Rings trilogy again :lollipop_pensive:

That’s a good point. Has there been any good recent adaptation?

Yeah, I'll second that. There was some slight monkeying with some of the characters, but, by and large, I loved it. And Villeneuve basically said the same thing as Jackson did: we're not expressing ourselves, we're expressing the material. It's almost as if that's a good idea...

Yep, Denis grew up reading the books and deeply respectful of the source material, and it showed in his movie. Can't wait for part 2.

Good luck chasing modern audiences with an established IP. These studios have balls, I’ll give them that.

I’d be walking on fucking eggshells after The Rings of Power debacle, but shit it ain’t my money they’re gonna burn.

Pro tip: People can smell inauthentic bullshit from a mile away and will reject it hard. Hope that helps, WB.

I think I would be open to a new story that takes place several centuries after RotK.

Like, there's been peace in Middle Earth for half an age, but now evil stirs in Mordor once more. New characters, evolved (yet familiar) locations, but the same governing rules of the universe.

Not sure how you'd work rings into it, though, since the One Ring was destroyed at Mt. Doom.

But why not? It doesn't have to end with Tolkien. If it's a well-planned, earnest endeavor with respect for the established lore, it could work.

Admittedly, however, that is one big fucking 'if'.
