A new entry in the vertical scrolling shoot ’em up series Aero Fighters is in development, SUCCESS Corporation‘s Shinya Nagatomo announced during Hamster Corporation‘s “502nd Arcade Archives Super Volley ’91 Special” broadcast.

Known as Sonic Wings in Japan, the series began with the release of the original Aero Fighters in 1992, and was followed up by sequels Aero Fighters 2 in 1994 and Aero Fighters 3 in 1995, compilation game Aero Fighters Special in 1996, and the 3D game Aero Fighters Assault in 1997. This makes the new game the first new entry in the series in 27 years.

A presentation event for the new Aero Fighters game will be held at EXBAR TOKYO plus in Shinjuku, Tokyo on November 8 at 20:00 JST, where information about the game and available platforms will be announced.

So the event happened yesterday. The game is going to be named Sonic Wings Reunion and it'll be a vertical shooter like SW1, i.e. traditional vertically oriented 4:3 monitor TATE style instead of the horizontal screen layout from the NEOGEO games.
No word on art style, if it's 3D or Pixel art, but it's slated for release on Arcade, Switch, PC & Playstation May 29'th 2025.

Developers from the old game as well as playable characters like Mao Mao & Kowful (a very Swedish name) make a return, again with character design by Fumihiko Nantoka.

I lied, Kowful sounds like fk'n nonsense.

Not feeling this new music especially after the jungle in 3, but I'm glad Hosoi is back. Is there any gameplay footage out there, I watched the events and I didn't see any.
