Nintendo eShop seemingly takes action against notorious “hentai” puzzle games

NeoGAF's Physical Games Advocate Extraordinaire
If you frequent the My Nintendo Store/Nintendo eShop, you’re probably already used to encountering mass produced games along the lines of “Hentai Girls” or “Hentai Golf” for ridiculously cheap prices, and have accepted this as a part of life. However, it seems the Switch store has been taking action against these sexy puzzle games, or at least, one of the methods they employ to gain exposure on the store.

Japanese X user Naruki, who tracks trends on My Nintendo Store, noticed and pointed out that a bunch of these “hentai games,” published by RedDeer.Games, have had their alternate versions delisted from the store since late February this year. To clarify, several of RedDeer.Games’ suggestive jigsaw puzzle games were listed on the store with an almost comically large number of different editions, such as “Ultimate Edition,” “Special Edition,” “Definitive Edition,” “Legendary Edition,” “Director’s Cut,” “Game of the Year Edition,” “Amazing Edition,” and “Epic Edition.”

Hentai Girls, for example, had a total of sixteen editions, but as of March 1, these have been deleted from the store. On the other hand, the game itself and its DLC remains available for purchase. The same has happened with Hentai Golf, Hentai World and Anime Girls.

Listing numerous “editions” of a game is generally considered to be a kind of exploit of Nintendo eShop’s system, meant to bump the game’s position in the recent releases section and give it more hits from people searching “Deluxe Edition” and the like when looking for other games. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that the practice is frowned upon by users of the platform, as it clutters up search results.

Did the Nintendo eShop take action in response to such complaints or did RedDeer.Games decide to clean up the store listings of their “Hentai series”? We can’t know for sure at the moment, but it might be worth mentioning that other games from the publisher, like the infamous “AAA Clock” still have many different editions listed on the store, so it’s possible that the sexually suggestive hentai puzzle games attracted more negative attention and were thus targeted. AUTOMATON has reached out to RedDeer.Games for comment, and will be updating this article if there is a response from the publisher.

Nintendo is a family-oriented brand, so this is common sense.

What amazes me is that digital stores have no human filter whatsoever. Is it so hard to have one guy checking this out daily?

How does Hentai Golf work exactly? Is it just the better you play, the more naked the anime girls get? Or are you playing on a Golf course that's essentially a giant naked woman and the objective is to put the ball in one of her holes? Because the latter is far more interesting.

Yes, because there are hundreds if not thousands games published daily. Also, companies hate everything that has to do with CS and QA, it's a cost center = doesn't bring in the $$$.

You can't get creative without having uncle working at Nintendo.

The other eshop exploit I noticed that publishers take advantage of to get their game more noticed on dekudeals and other price monitoring websites is making their game continually hit their "new lowest price" by lowering the cost by a penny.

Yeah, PQube does that quite often. In this case it's less obnoxious because at least you get a slightly better price every time.

I prefer this than other companies that make the same price drop time and again (and I've seen even worse). This is from the Argentina store which opened in 2022.

It's kind of cool that Nintendo is not censoring everything, though, currently Demon Gaze Extra, a dungeon crawler, and so far there were a few ecchi things (not as bad as Moero Crystal H though), however it took me by surprise as I only checked one gameplay to see if it was grid movement. These "Hentai" games, though, are obviously using the name for appealing which leads me to believe they are just low quality, quickly done games with AI-generated illustrations (never bought one).

There have been several cases of censorship at Nintendo very recently.
