An AI-assisted upscaling mode, called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, works across the whole game library without any needed patch, adding in details to upscale to 4K. I didn't see this demonstrated, but the feature should help enhance older games if you have a 4K TV. It'll also work on PSVR 2 games in the future, too, Cerny said.

As CNET's resident VR expert, I'm curious what the PS5 Pro can do for the PlayStation VR 2, although Sony's support for the headset has been underwhelming lately. Cerny said the Pro will allow higher-resolution games on the PSVR 2 thanks to the GPU boost and eventually a tuning of Sony's AI upscaling that will work with all VR games. But no specific PSVR 2 upgraded games have been announced yet, and I wonder what those improvements would even feel like. (I mentioned to Cerny and Nishino that I'd still love to see original PSVR games like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which are incompatible with PSVR 2, to get ports that still haven't happened yet. I didn't get a response to that comment.)

Only $100 more than the adorably all digital 2 TB XSX no :)?

but seriously I still hate AI image reconstruction and fake frames. all your games will look like 120 fps but still play at 24.

The communication at Sony HQ is fucking terrible. The same happens with base PS5 BC.
Yeah same happened with ps5 BC.

They put out comms that made it sound like only some ps4 games would work in back compat. When in pretty much most the library worked without issues.

Yeah, the base PS5 BC list is vast and would kinda help the PS5pro presentation with a little more info about what games will get PSSR support.

The 2TB series X has a disc drive, so it’s 180$ more (280€ in Europe). Give that that SKU was, rightfully, criticized for being overpriced, I think the complaints here are valid.

I was disappointed by the price, but then, like you, I thought of that 2 TB Xbox one for 599. A much superior Pro also with 2T for 699 doesn't seem too expensive now...

Different needs. I got a PS5 with the disk drive by mistake in 2020 (I guess the store was out of digital versions and had to send me that one). Only popped a disk once to test it, but never used it again.

Interesting. How will they intercept and change the reconstruction solution from FSR or checkerboarding or TSR to their own solution? And even if they could do it would devs allow it without testing?

What? We're not talking about remasters here, we're talking about software that automatically improves your existing games without developer input. Who would not want all those old 1080p PS4 games to look like 4k?

The most vocal about the price I noticed are people who have no, or never intended to buy a pro in the first place

Gaming GPUs rely on that: people buy expensive NVidia cards and then mostly play the same games as those with cheaper hardware.

Is this a spacial upscaler like DLSS1 or FSR1? Because without motion vector information etc. there is no way this would work for every game without devs investing time in patches for their games etc.

Just like DLSS 2 und FSR 2 devs need to implement support for it in their gamecode. I guess PSSR would work the same way. Therefore I call "bullshit" on this news.

FYI, Cnet's wording is a bit wonky.

They imply that PSSR will help all older games without needing patches.

Dude this series X is the biggest rip off in the market. Get more capable PS5 normal for less price or get a PRO for added benefit.

Hows the PS5 normal more capable? The Series X is more powerful in every way than the base PS5 and you can get it regularly for around $400. Only advantage PS5 has in my opinion are better first party games, but its certainly not more capable lol

It will probably work similarly to DLDSR. Take the final output image and reconstruct it up to a higher target and then downscale if necessary back to 4K. PS4 games at 1080p would be integer scaled up to 4K, while 4K games could conceivably be scaled to 8K and then back down to 4K.

It's actually something I was really excited about for the Pro as AI reconstruction can still do some work on an image its fed without it needing to be coded in. It's just inferior. See RTX Video for pretty solid results on video footage.

I could conceivably see it put to work on PS3 backwards compatibility if they ever got that working. 720p for the base PS5 and enhanced further with PSSR on the Pro.

Everything else was known from the rumors. For those invested in the system with tons of games, having your entire library improved is pretty big. I'm not one of those that buys a game and sells it after they're done.

This is where I hope Sonys broader tech is being leveraged.

Their top of the line TVs bypass hardware upscaling to identify source information (e.g. low nitrate 720p image upscale by Apple TV to 4k) and treat it as such vs the upscale input.

A developer working on PS5 Pro kits is saying that part is wrong.

I think the CNet author jumped the shark here.

Someone should ask him for clarifications. But if that is being tested internally by Sony a third party developer would not know of it yet.
