Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7, will direct the next new entry in the Resident Evil series.

As confirmed during the Capcom Next digital showcase, Nakanishi will helm the next new entry in the series, expected to be Resident Evil 9.

“It was difficult to figure out what to do after Resident Evil 7,”

Nakanishi said.

“But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can’t share any details yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”

While yet to be officially revealed by Capcom, reports of Resident Evil 9’s progress have increased in recent months.

Guy had monumental balls to take the franchise so traditional and reboot it in such a convention-breaking way, especially with VR in mind. RE7 is on par with GoW 2018 in taking something stale and making it fresh again with very unconventional soft-reboot.

I'm eagerly awaiting RE9.

Great...My least liked RE game.Hopefully it borrows more from RE8 than the boring slog of RE7. Game is awesome on a first playthrough. Absolutely horrendous on repeats.

The DLCs were the best thing about RE7.

I think it's bad on the first playthrough, too., though I agree the DLCs were good.

The base game becomes an uninspired mess at the ship, gets worse in the mines, and then lets out the loudest, wettest fart it possibly can when the final boss is revealed.

This game was yet another nail in the coffin for gaming "journos." How the fuck can you possibly overlook the last half of a game when doing a review? By not playing it, of course.

But I was talking strictly about PS4 gen. RE4 is brilliant, but it’s older than a lot of GAF members by now.

Yeah, but 4 was more unconventional overall for the series. 7 basically took the original survival horror gameplay and put it in first person. I’m not saying there were zero innovation, but it was not as revolutionary to those who recognized the foundation used from the original RE titles.

Resident Evil was in a very bad place for a while, and RE7 saved it from mediocrity. It took a franchise that was at it's lowest point and suffering from an identity crisis, and brought it back to it's survival roots. The boat section was trash, I agree. But the first third of that game is one of the best survival horror experiences in gaming. I fondly remember how brilliant the marketing of that game was. Where they released a demo, and drip fed updates to it to keep people speculating. Players were pouring over the demo and try to discover any secret they could, and share their findings online. The game was mysterious and legit spooky. Fans who don't like RE7 can go get fucked.

As ShaiKhulud1989 ShaiKhulud1989 mentioned, it was a ballsy entry that took some heavy risks, and reinvigorated the IP.

I love Resident Evil, but I'm not the most hardcore fan. Once upon a time I owned a few first-person games, but overall I hate first-person games as a genre. I could never play Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8 because of their design choices. I used to love Super Metroid, but Nintendo letting white people westernize it pissed me off and made me avoid the thought of even buying a Nintendo console to play those first-person Metroids.
When Capcom - and Nintendo - makes third person games again, I'll be ready.

RE changed it's mold for 3 times already, where 7 was current iteration of the same survival-horror formula. It's really hard to look at the series this long without picking favorites.

7 for me was a pivotal point where I finally was converted from occasional RE buyer to RE fan. Especially because of terrific use of VR.

Interesting choice.

I just hope it doesn't have the same pacing issues that RE 7 had.

Arguably after Margaret dies, the game becomes only okay.
Lucas is great, and his section does peak the game a bit over just okay, but it doesn't reach the same peak when Jack and Margaret were still around.

Also the ending and "final boss" are very flaccid.

But I'm excited to see what him and the gang do!

I don’t think the boat section was even that bad even if it was inferior to what came before in the game, rather the final mines section that was just a long corridor was where it fell apart capping with a very basic final boss. Also, I assume you meant the first two thirds of the game, as the main house, the side house, and Lucas’ area takes roughly 60-70% of the game.

Edit: also, I only see 6 as the lowest point. 5 is still a very fun game, Revelations 1 is good but flawed (needs to cut everything except the Jill sections, and to an extent keep the Chris sections, also don’t make the plot focus so heavily on these new randoms), and Revelations 2 was very solid.

As long as it's third person, I'm hyped. This man made the scariest entry in the series. As much as I fucking love RE4make and want more games like it, I still think the main entries should maintain horror. Re8 lost a bit of that (though it also had potentially the scariest scene in the series).

I still hope that Leon game is legit though as a different entry.

Pls no 'blank slate' 'everyman' protagonist again, that's all I ask.

Ethan redeemed himself somewhat with Village, but in a series full of iconic and charismatic leads, it was still a terrible idea.

Funny enough though, I think 4 Remake did have far more of a horror vibe than the original 4.

There was nothing unconventional about RE7, VR and first-person horror were already a trend back then. Now RE4, that was convention-breaking for its time.

Because RE7 "went back to horror" so a lot of people gave it a free pass. And yes, there were a lot of issues in the game.

I thought RE7 was okay overall, but not great. Didn't like Ethan, didn't like the gore-porn or grindhouse horror, didn't like the enemies or the last third. But I did like a lot of the first few areas and it was really, really scary to be fair.

I'd like RE9 to basically be like RE2make. Or possibly RE4make. Those two were much better than 7 IMO.

On replays that boat section is a genuinely slog for me, especially with all the flashback sections. And yeah, everything before the boat house was great, but I think Jack's section in particular is the peak of the game.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
1st person yeahhhhh!!!

but hopefully more replay value like re4. Less "walking" section please.
I say it and i say it again, re4 remake has alot of amazing play areas. RE7 has....few? alot of them are boring sections in ng+

RE7 has some great moments but the latter half of the game loses that momentum.

Also, IMO the mold was the worst thing to happen to the series.
The molded were O.K. That crawling molded on Madhouse was cheap as fuck, tho. Son of a bitch. Shotty or Rotary Saw on a single duck and slice.
Fucking A, when I first started playing that game I was getting dicked down by those mother fuckers. They one shot on Madhouse!

Having played the game in VR, as my first experience with RE7, I can tell you that the Molded were absolutely terrifying. That game gave me a horror experience like no other.

Good choice for the director, loved RE7 and Revelations.

Also I really enjoyed the second half of RE7, including the boat section, I've never quite understood the criticism. It felt like you could enjoy the mechanics of the combat more in the second half plus the added power fantasy of actually being able to dominate the molded by that point was great fun.

I don't mind this being another first person game, I just wish we got to play as Ethan Winters one last time.
