Did you hear, guys? Apparently, locking down exclusives like The Elder Scrolls, Starfield, and Indiana Jones is fine for a failing console brand, but when the market leader keeps FromSoftware's gems exclusive to PlayStation, it suddenly becomes a huge issue.

Anyone thinking this is for anime by the way is living in a dream land, how much money does sony make from gaming vs anime, lets get fucking real people.

There are at least a couple of benefits this acquisition may bring:
  • Bloodborne remaster may become a realistic possibility
  • Even Bloodborne 2 may be on the cards
  • FromSoftware's positive impact on other PlayStation Studios games (and vice versa)
  • FromSoftware might end up releasing a technically optimized game at least once in their lifetime.
Those are some great points. However, I am not holding my breath for the bolded, unless the market penalizes this behaviour of releasing unoptimized crap and From's horrendous optimization record will persist.

The lack of optimization in japanese software is truly baffling. This year we got Metaphor (a game I actually hope wins GoTY), which is a prime example of this. It runs like crap (especially considering how it looks) and I do not know why it does not have the option for even basic post-process AA techniques like SMAA or FXAA. P5R had SMAA if I recall correctly.

Well, Sony made a lot of money from anime streaming, music, IP rights and gachas like FGO. Crunchyroll surpassed the $2B User Spending Mark this year. It's no slouch and the margins there were very, very good, better than in gaming.

Silver lining is that although this would have a high chance of killing From Soft, we’ve had the best run. DeS, DaS, DaS III, Sekiro, Bloodborne and ER - 6 phenomenal world class games with a lot of replayability and we’ll probably get an uncompromised ER II as well. Miyazaki is 50 now and would probably realistically look to step back by the age of what, 60? The games have endless replayability, we’ve been blessed.

Go for it Sony. I do I buy multiplatform games but I always prefer exclusives or 1st party or 2nd party because it will have better quality due to it developers focus all there resources on the capabilities of a specific console. I just hope it will not turn woke. By the way, correct me if Im wrong, from what I know Sony already has shares with fromsoftware especially with Elden ring?

Found on Reeee.

I was in a meeting and suddenly the number of messages and emails increased.

I can say vague things, but I don't have anything to say with certainty yet. However, I think it can be said that they consider it a possible option to bring Kadokawa, now that the founding family has left, into the group as an IP creation core.

(Not by Sony, but it is my understanding that acquisition talks have been going on for some time now.)

All of this is on the table with the trifecta of FromSoftware + Bluepoint + Nixxes

Demon's Souls PC Port
Demon's Souls 2 AKA Dark Souls 4 - PS5, PC a year after launch
Bloodborne Remastered - PS5, PC a year after launch
Bloodborne 2 - PS5, PC a year after launch
Elden Ring 2 - PS5, PC a year after launch

That's 3 new games, a port, and a remaster probably all within the next 5-7 years.

Hopefully all the "why did Sony close the Japan Studio?" crybabies would now shut the fuck up, as this acquisition would bring Spike Chunsoft (Danganronpa, AI: The Somnium Files, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero), Acquire (Tenchu, No Heroes Allowed, Rain, Octopath Traveller) and FromSoftware (Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Souls, Armored Core, Sekiro) into the fold.

I listed this as one that makes sense but I always think about this as how Sony could have bought them much cheaper. This purchase is effectively to stop MS buying them. I can't see them taking games off Xbox.

You could create a new Japan Studios label.

But just think of the prestige of having Asobi, Polyphony Digital, and FromSoftware. I think that would put them up against pretty much any Japanese studio not named Nintendo.

Lets talk in a few years ... if they are not gaas machines and/or have been closed .. than we can celebrate.

Those of you downplaying FromSoftware in this should realize that FromSoftware is probably worth two thirds of Kadokawa's total value.

They are not a footnote in this.
two thirds? Are you high?

FromSoft makes them a ton of profit when they release a game, yes, but overall their gaming segment's revenue makes up not even 20% of their overall revenue. The profit can be amazing when they have something like Elden Ring on their hands as can be seen from their financial reports (2022-2023), but even then their gaming profit just equals their anime/manga segment.

Their gaming segment is extremely volatile generating 5-15 billion Yen profit, while their anime/manga segment is growing and is generating a stable 15-20 billion Yen profit each year (it would be over 20b for 2025 if they hadn't had a cyberattack earlier this year which cost them 6.4b in profit according to their financial report).

This is what Sony wants. Getting FromSoft for Playstation is just a nice bonus here.

Western media hit pieces incoming, hard. Get ready for gems like this:

Activision buyout from Microsoft is different because reasons,

Sony is monopolizing the industry,

Gamers are the real losers in this deal,

Nintendo would be a better fit for FromSoft

Gaming across the board needs a reset,

Consolidation is now terrible. Turn tables everywhere abruptly.

A few years ago this would have been a huge deal and a big win in the console wars, but now the console wars are over(by Phil Spencers own admission),and From games will remain multiplatform(because £££££).......thing's are a lot less fun around here these days, lol.

Yep. Never doubt that the games media will have the exactly wrong conversation at sny given time.

It probably (hopefully) has very little to do with gaming.

"(Not by Sony, but my understanding is that takeover talks have not been unheard of.)"

Sounds like another player is involved other than Sony. Best bet is Tencent as they already own shares in Kadakawa.

I won't be surprised if they accept Sony as Kadakawa has a piece of the pie in almost everything non-gaming and that sort of stuff is better to have with another domestic company, rather than selling all those rights and ownerships to a Chinese company.

Think people are misunderstanding the tweet. Based on other translated tweets, it looks like Kadokawa has been looking to sell for some time, so they may have engaged in talks with other companies before Sony.

That Sony involved and talks look like they'll be wrapped up within weeks, we're looking at this being a done deal by the end of the year...

Massive move by Sony.

It makes a ton of sense for Sony given Sonys attempts to secure a monopoly on anime distribution. Fromsoft are icing on the cake for them
