[Reuters] Exclusive-Sony in talks to buy media powerhouse behind 'Elden Ring', sources say

Think people are misunderstanding the tweet. Based on other translated tweets, it looks like Kadokawa has been looking to sell for some time, so they may have engaged in talks with other companies before Sony.

That Sony involved and talks look like they'll be wrapped up within weeks, we're looking at this being a done deal by the end of the year...

Massive move by Sony.

As previously reported by Reuters, Sony is considering acquiring KADOKAWA. A spokesperson for KADOKAWA said, "At this point, nothing is definite."

I think the other players are still involved. They probably DO want to get Kadakawa, but I highly doubt it will be easy for Sony if Tencent or someone else is involved.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Do you prefer Microsoft or Tencent will acquire Kadokawa? A none option isn't possible. :p

it would be dumbest idea ever to make from software games exclusive . they sell really well as multi platfrom.
Unlike a lot of multi platform games, which struggle to get 15-20% of sales on xbox, Elden ring actually did pretty well, with 30%. So there’s definitely an audience for it there. However, it was both a cross gen game, and was a while ago now. The “nobody buys xbox games, they just get them for free on games pass” phenomenon has really picked up steam in the last couple of years, and the console unit sales divide between xbox and PlayStation has really widened quite considerably in the last couple of years too. So I would be surprised if they would lose any more than at most 20% by choosing not to launch on xbox.

Making it console exclusive, even a timed one would definitely drive some console sales, without sacrificing an uncomfortable amount of sales (some of which they could recoup if they chose to bring it to xbox two years later).

Making from soft games ps5 only tho, if that’s the route they took, would definitely hurt (I doubt they’d do that tho)

This is big news if you are a Sony/Kadokawa shareholder. Not so big news for a gamer as I imagine all souls game will be multiplat going forward. I expect the Switch 2 port of Elden Ring to sell exceedinly well and Sony will make a big folly if they make From's output exclusive.
They dont have to make them exclusive, if they are acquiring studios that normally are multi platform then they usually keep them that way (see Bungie) it just makes them more money that way. But with FromSoft that could open up the possibility of 'some' exclusivity if they do something like Bloodborne 2, but an Elden Ring or new Dark Souls game would remain multi platform most likely.

FROMSOFT doesn't have a say as they're owned by the parent company being bought out. Bungies one condition was to remain multiplatform and they had the upper hand to ask for that condition as they weren't owned by anyone.

My fear is that I don't want Hermen Hulst or Totoki or Sony top brass in general getting any big ideas about being a multimedia conglomerate where the gaming piece is just a cog in that machine. We see what that kind of position has led to with the Xbox brand.
Havent Sony always been that though? Sure, gaming is perhaps 'the' most important section of what they do, but they have always been a multimedia/tv/audio/camera/other hardware company.

Doesnt mean Sony couldn't very easily continue with the multi platform releases that From currently do. Thats up to Sony if they do buy them, but it wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if they continue with multplatform for a majority of releases (like I said, unless they make a Bloodborne 2, which I think will be PS exclusive)

Supposed this guarantees Sekiro 2 will be full of wokeness. Hip hop side kick and a woman dispensing the missions and no-nonsense advice. That's pretty much the minimum you'd expect in a Sony branded Elden Ring 2. I'd look for product placement too."Nothing helps you traverse the lands between like a Jeep Wrangler GLADIATOR".

Go Sony. Finally this is a much better purchase than Bungie and Firewalk. But I hope it will still be base in Japan to avoid western woke agenda.

On a more lighthearted note, how long until Dark Souls games gets put on those "Sony games are all the same" montages?
It's inevitable imo lol.

Just wait until Totoki makes all those proud PC warriors sign into PSN for Elden Ring 2. That man has his finger on the gaming trolling pulse tbh.

Did you hear, guys? Apparently, locking down exclusives like The Elder Scrolls, Starfield, and Indiana Jones is fine for a failing console brand, but when the market leader keeps FromSoftware's gems exclusive to PlayStation, it suddenly becomes a huge issue.

There’s going to be a fucking cottage industry of finding old pro ABK acquisition posts when the Xbox fans start complaining about From games being exclusive to Sony.

Of course nothing is definite, otherwise they'd be reporting that the deal is finished.

But Sony making a move for Kadokawa is serious business. Especially after the deal for Paramount fell through. I'd be surprised if they couldn't get this over the finish line.

It's big for anime/manga and its big for tv/movies, and it's big for PlayStation.

There will be a counter with Xbox guys finding anti-ABK posts by Sony guys.

Like I said, Totoki is a master troll.

This is probably Sony and not Playstation who want to buy. So nope, they probably want the Anime/manga part of Kadokawa

Stop pushing this narrative.

Before Elden Ring, Kadokawa was trading at 526 yen per share. They're now trading at 3,745 yen per share... The valuation of their company is entirely dependant on FromSoftware...

Damn man, how they can keep doing it?
One small acquisition at a time but being a lot more in touch with what has value and what not.

That's how you become an industry leader, not by throwing money here and there.
FromSoftware always had technical problems, making more games with the help from ICE team will probably result in the best games ever created.
Great stuff.

Considering that I am a PS fanboy and Sony is apparently buying Fromsoft, am I finally allowed to say that it makes no sense for sote to be in consideration for goty? It's a dlc, the award is "game of the year", if you want to award sote, give it "dlc of the year" or "dlc of the decade", not goty.

From already bought back the Elden Ring publishing rights, almost as if in preparation for this.
Oh right, I forgot about that. Still they can have some agreement. I imagine that when you are selling full rights to IP like that you need a lot of money (especially that it was their biggest hit) or some kind of agreement. But maybe not.

No mate, they are clearly doing it for from software.
Purchase X company for a few anime projects and movies vs purchase X company for one of the biggest and most popular development studios who make some of the most highly regarded games released.

Please.

Screw head on.

I just want the gaming part to remain "the" most important.

Maybe I'm too twitchy with the alarm bells, but the lack of care in acquisitions is ultimately what sealed Microsoft's fate.
