Rumor: Project 007 (IO interactive) to be both first and third person

Announced three years ago by IO Interactive, Project 007 still doesn't have many official details or a release date. But a controversial gameplay element may have been confirmed through the publication of a new job vacancy.

The studio is looking for a senior level designer specializing in combat, and candidates must have experience in third-person and first-person action games.

Immediately, many fans pointed out that this game will be a sort of "hybrid" of camera angles, similar to MachineGames' recent Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Have a passion for and demonstrate expertise in crafting levels with a keen focus on combat scenarios for third-person (or first-person) action-adventure games."
In this particular case, it will be mainly first-person, but will have third-person moments for traversal and cinematic sequences.

Difficult to say anything without knowing anything about the game. They've already tried something similar when they added a VR mode to one of the Hitman games. Building a game from the ground up with plans for both perspectives should lead to even better results.

Just make a remake of NOLF. The whole james bond thing has a serious smelly feet problem. The last well made Bond movie was the modern Casino Royale.

Oh, you. Your gif implies all the first-person haters will now come out of the woodwork to complain. They won't! Because it's a great fit for 007!

As much as certain people insist on framing this debate as first vs third person, the debate is over whether it was appropriate for that game.

Yeah, the debate whether first person was a good fit for that game because it featured an iconic movie protangonist.

Oh, wait.

So now all movie protagonists are the same and if one thing works for one character it automatically works for another character with no critical judgement whatsoever. Bond, a character played by 20 different actors, with a genre-defining past in FPS video games. Compared to one of the most iconic likenesses of all time, from adventure genre, who rarely uses guns. But keep using the simplest logic possible to help form false equivalencies all day lol

It may or may not have both...

...But this is QUITE the conclusion to jump to based on that single line from a job listing. They could just mean that skills from both genres are applicable.

I think what he and others have been saying this whole time is that perspective doesn't matter and that they just need to be good video games.

Games like Goldeneye and Riddick simply had the luxury of releasing and just being awesome games, because social media was not as prevalent back then.

That's exactly what it is. It's even clear that the game is in third person. IO Interactive is mainly looking for people who have experience creating third person action games. They just indicate that applicants who have worked on first person action games can also apply. But the parenthesis around "or first-person" give away it's a second choice.

First person?
Brace Yourself Here We Go GIF by MOODMAN

Nobody ever said first person was a problem in general. It just doesn't fit an indiana Jones game. An action adventure with an iconic character. Let's face it, they only went with it because they have no experience making 3rd person games. If they gave it to a studio who could, you think they would choose first person instead of third? Doubt it.

Sure a game can be good regardless of perspective and even IP attached. But what we get could be a poor fit/use of that IP. I'd prefer a great 007 game than simply a great game with 007 in it -I see that as a missed opportunity. Whatever IJ is I'll probably play it at some point because I expect a decent game, but not necessarily an outstanding Indy game.

I think Bond has more flexibility because it has history as FPS and is kind of a lapsed franchise, it can "return" going in different directions as a spy game for example mixing Goldeneye with Splinter Cell or Metal Gear. It wouldn't be a sequel to Goldeneye but it already has successors. Might make it a better spy game than Goldeneye, even if the FPS aspect of the game is better had elsewhere. Or it could stay FPS only but need to be a really good game to be noteworthy...we just have so many already.

I think a hybrid first/third person view might be a good fit for a spy game like 007 same way a third person view is best for Indiana Jones. The characters just lend themselves better to a certain style and gameplay IMO. It's not a crusade against either style. I think a good 3D Indy game makes you almost feel like a platforming character because that's just how he acts in the movie. It can still be a great game if it doesn't capture that it just means it's not my idea of a great use of the IP

yeah, right. We’ve had two Bonds in the modern gaming era, each starring in 4 movies apiece, just one short of the total number of Indiana Jones movies. At the time of Golden Eye’s release, Pierce Brosnan was globally recognizable as Bond. Not to mention the likes of Sean Connery that starred in seven Bond movies.

Nobody’s arguing that it automatically has to work for another franchise or character. It just invalidates the argument that you need to see an iconic character at all times in third person otherwise it’s a ‘travesty’.

An action adventure with an iconic character.

Welp 🤣

Or perhaps they went first person because they have significant experience translating first person POV into an immersive experience, as seen in Riddick and The Darkness?

The guys who made KI 2013 had never made a fighting game before. Goldeneye was Rare’s first ever FPS title. The idea that highly experienced game developers can’t pivot to a different perspective is something one doesn’t expect to read on an enthusiast game forum.

I agree with most of your points. I just feel that if that Indy game ends up getting a score that's not 8, 9, or 10, people are going to be putting some of the blame in the wrong direction.

Indiana Jones movie are really about adventure and archeology, with his university and profession as a backdrop. Some of that is what MachineGames say they hope to capture in their game. Not sure how that makes you think ‘platforming’ or ‘platformer’.

Some of you need to acknowledge that it isn’t the movies you’re trying to honor, but Uncharted and Tomb Raider.

Personally I wanted it to be a 3rd person game, pre-reveal. I’d still probably prefer it to be third person. But it’s silly to insist first person is ‘wrong’ or a ‘bad choice’. It’s a different choice, but at least one that could very well work out, just like Metroid Prime did.

I'm not saying 007's likeness is worthless, just that it's on a different planet than Harrison Ford himself as Indiana Jones. It's like Han Solo, nobody else can even do it. Whereas we just guess who the next Bond will be.

Nobody ever said you should see an iconic character on screen all the time; it was this specific character this time, so we are in agreement that it doesn't automatically have to work for another franchise/character.

My opinion on what would make a good IJ game is really based on nothing but my own impression of the character. Nothing said by MachineGames has anything to do with it. I am not saying they are going to make a poor platformer. I'm saying my idea of capturing Indy's essence involves almost feeling like a platforming game character -and we aren't getting it. Your quote makes it sound like they will "capture" stuff like his profession, with story and cutscenes. That's great and all but I'm talking about capturing the essence of the character in moment-to-moment gameplay. Just my opinion I think capturing that would involve a 3p view. Doesn't mean it can't be a fine game despite that sure.

I don't care if it's first or third person camera.

I think Goldeneye was a highly overrated game by people who didn't play previous better shooters back then because they started with a N64.

I think Hitman, Metal Gear, Deus EX or Splinter Cell offer a better secret agent experience. So if I had to choose one of them, I'd go with 3rd person. But I'm ok with both.

This is awful. They should’ve gone for one or thr other. The games that tried to do both are really awful at both.

I like this style of game. Hopefully it means more environment-driven storytelling and less “walking and talking” because the director would rather be making an HBO series.

Of all the examples you could have picked lol. You gave the man ammo with that answer.

Damn, a lot of idiotic takes around these days on gaf. You can play the game without issues on third person. Same as most Bethesda games like Fallout 3,4,Starfield. Their shitty animations has nothing to do with the view and I dont see IO doing poorly on that aspect.
