Hazelight Studios’ latest co-op adventure, Split Fiction, is out later this week, with players controlling writers Mio and Zoe as they attempt to escape a simulation. They’ll visit fantasy and science fiction worlds, relying on each other to overcome their imaginations.

It’s a lengthy quest, with director Josef Fares confirming a playtime of 12 to 14 hours, though the side content could push that even further. Interestingly, he also told MinnMax that the budget is “almost double” of It Takes Two, the studio’s previous title. When jokingly asked where all the money went, Fares replied, “Look at the game, man. Are you kidding me? Look at the game!”

Regardless, Split Fiction’s scope is arguably more ambitious, encompassing multiple scenarios – from transforming into pigs to a spacewalk – with many more gameplay mechanics. The visual fidelity is also arguably higher with heavier requirements on PC (check them out here).

Game looks awesome environment and story wise, but i'm not sold on the two protagonists yet. The rest of the game intrigues me alot though and i'll keep an eye of sauron on it in the meantime.

It Takes Two didn’t have a budget problem though. It won GOTY.

I hope money didn’t fuck this one up

As a consumer, I appreciate the only 1 person has to buy the game for two to play. But with the success of It Takes Two…. Was this really necessary from a business standpoint?

Game looks great, if not better than ITT. I think most would be willing to buy their own copy knowing the caliber of this team.

It Takes Two was a surprise. Some parts of it were a bit… off (mainly the acting and some of the story elements), but it was perfect where it mattered: the game had so many unique moments, it was very diverse (not DEI, but like one second you are shooting, the next second you were flying a plane, the next you were 1v1 a squirrel in a 2D fighting game) and at all the times, the game felt intuitive. The visuals were also very special with unique environments.

I got It Takes Two on discount around 2022, but I’m getting Split Fiction day fucking one. The game has no DLC, no pre-order bonus, etc. The director has publicly condemned such practices and in this day and age, we gotta vote with our wallets if we want to support such things.

I’m also not 100% sold in the protagonists, but I’m giving it a shot anyways:

1. The director said that the girls are named after his own daughters. As a father myself, I respect it. I am playing this game with my oldest daughter after all too.
2. I’m okay with female protagonists, as long as they are not in your face lesbians. Nothing against lesbians, but I’m playing this game to escape reality a bit and enjoy the time with my daughter. I want to avoid having to explain in the middle of the game why mommy and mommy are kissing lol
3. I understand the chemistry between the two girls is more that of siblings, maybe fighting in the beginning (don’t get along) but become besties by the end. I’m okay with that. Hopefully the most controversial bit of this title is the pig massacre and nothing else.

Regardless, game seems like a blast. Hopefully it delivers and wins tons of awards.
