I thought it was great for what it was. Its was very well received.
The last MI was poor but the rest I enjoyed, along with the new Topgun. I think pre covid he did make other stuff more regularly , American Made was decent for example.
I mean...it's not like the man doesn't try and release good movies once in a while and no one cares. Edge of Tomorrow was kind of awesome and it flopped. The Mummy was bad but at least he was trying to go for something different. Jack Reacher wasn't terrible but too similar to other franchises he was already doing so it flopped. About him "doing something else besides Top Gun"...the man did one in the 80's and one a few years ago. This isn't the Saw franchise.
I agree with most of this, Maverick was a prime example of "right movie, right time". TG3 can't hit that high again unless they fold in Iron Eagle, Flight of the Navigator, Airwolf, and, fuck it, Macross why not? into the mix. They can't make a compelling bad guy unless they put China in it and they won't do that, though I suppose a Russia/Ukraine thing might work. But this nebulous "nameless country with fifth gen fighters" nonsense won't work again (though, now that I think about it, TG did basically the same thing over the Med, I think). They either need to just buy Red Storm Rising and adapt that basic storyline or it's gonna be a Fast and Furious thing with jet fighters from nefarious corporations or some shit. Though a Strike Commander plot with PMCs that somehow can afford advanced airframes going at it over African mines or whatever would be fine with me, it's the plane cinematography I'm coming for anyway.

I think we know with CERTAINTY that Miles and Glen are not capable of anchoring a tentpole blockbuster on their own. None of their individual projects have been a commercial success despite any critical acclaim.

I want some 1/2 scale remote piloted planes with in cockpit VR cameras so the real pilots in motion sims can fly the planes and capture 8k video for use in the film. Fly around REAL landscapes, do REAL dogfighting with REAL maneuvers. Then mirror that with the actors in g force simulators or backseats for that visceral effect. Cruise's adherence to making folks experience real motion helps his stunts soooo much versus the "pretend to fall to the left" stuff.
The fact that LucasArts could get a Rogue Squadron film off the ground, DESPITE the success of Maverick and having Patty Jenkins attached AND the wealth of lore already existing to mine for plots.....JFC the failure is immense. You have fricking WEDGE ANTILLES, Imperial defector so you can have some early academy stuff, then fights at Yavin, Hoth, AND Endor so you can fill the entire first act with a different POV retelling of those battles alone.
