Twelve games in twelve months

If you're looking for the more hardcore 52 games in a year post, then please go here

dQhU03.jpg

I've tried the 52 games a year challenge and it is just overwhelming though fun to try once. So I thought we could have a smaller one for those of us with more pressures on our time, or don't play as much as we used to. Rules are similar.

How do I take part?
Claim a ‘main post’ where you will list all your completions for the year. You can use fancy images or special formatting to make it extra cool. In addition to this post your updates, completions and thoughts as singular posts throughout the year.

How do I know when I've completed a game?
That can be tricky to determine, but it's ultimately up to you. If its a straightforward single player game then it's typically when the credits roll, but if it's say a multiplayer session based game maybe its when you’ve unlocked a certain feature or completed a battle pass.

Do the completions need to be games released this year?
Nope; any video game will suffice. It can be first plays or replays, classics or recent releases. It can be a game you started last year but are finishing this year.

reserved & bookmarked because this one will be very doable while that 52 games in a year challenge is too hardcore for my taste.

January:

#1 - Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition - Currently playing through the base game (clocked in around 30h so far).

#2 - Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation - I've started playing it around two days ago, but since it's a gacha game you can't really 'complete it'.

Completed. Couldn't be arsed to replay and get no deaths for the remaining achievements. Was a decent surprise this one.

Not sure I'll be able to complete it but let's try it out.

Do you need to complete a game per month, or that doesn't matter?

#1 Like a Dragon: Gaiden (January)

Sounds like fun! And more importantly, sounds very doable. I've taken a look at my rather big and intimidating backlog, and I've decided on these 12 games (which may or may not change depending on mood and new games). In no particular order:
  1. PS5 - Red Dead Redemption 2
Finished - 7/10, 60 hours of playtime. Visually stunning world with an interesting overarching story, stellar performances and character developments, but held back by outdated controls and terrible mission design and progression.
  2. PS5 - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  3. PS5 - The Talos Principle
  4. PS5 - Outer Wilds
  5. PS5 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  6. Switch - Final Fantasy VII
  7. Switch - Fire Emblem Engage
  8. Switch - Xenoblade Chronicles
  9. Switch - Pokémon Legends: Arceus
  10. Switch - Super Mario Sunshine
  11. PC - Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
  12. PC - Tyranny, or Pillars of Eternity II

Started playing RDR2 around new year's eve, so the year's off to a good start.
Also, looking back at this list while typing, I may have chosen some big games that require a lot of time. But we'll see how far we get.

Awesome, this is much more up my street than 52 which just isn't doable for me anymore. This will also help me stop buying games and focus on finishing stuff I already have!

I'll post my games and when I've completed them followed by a few words on what I thought.

1. Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty (PC) - finished 11/01/24

Really enjoyed my time with this. The expansion had a really gripping story which I played through before the last stretch of the OG campaign. Loved the combat, especially the hacking! 9/10.

2. Gears 5 (PC) - Finished 17/01/24

I needed this after Cyberpunk. A good palette cleanser that took me just over 9 hours to beat. Completed all the secondary missions in the open world sections, although wasn't a big fan of the open world parts. Will play through Hivebusters but won't count it separately as it's super short. 7/10

3. Dead Space Remake (PC) - Finished 29/01/24

So I picked this up back in a Steam sale last year and go up to around chapter 4. Since I finished Gears 5, I thought I'd go back to this one since I want to play through my backlog. I finished the OG Dead Space back when it first released on 360 and it was my one of my favourite survival horror games. I just wrapped this up and wow, amazing. Superb presentation, extremely atmospheric and just a ton of fun to play. 10/10 legendary game.

4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2023 version - PC/Steam Deck) - Finished 25/02/24

This is one of those games that I had played an hour of and then turned off because I was busy with other games. Now I realise how silly that was, as this is a fantastic game and probably the best of the series (not by much mind). Easy story to follow for once and the gameplay is still so much fun. I had a great time with this one but felt like the last few cutscenes dragged on a bit in typical Kojima fashion. 9/10

5. Rage 2 (Steam Deck) - Finished 21/04/24

Not terrible but not great either. The shooting is really fun, but the game lets itself down with an incredibly boring open world and very repetitive mission structures. Missions typically involve, go here find this, or go here and kill this. Fortunately there are only 8 missions, the killing bit is fun and the weapons are pretty good. Whoever thought to lock weapons behind the Arks is stupid, I only grabbed a few as I didn't want to prolong my time spent with the game. 5/10

6. Aliens Vs Predator 2010 (PC/Steam Deck) - Finished 16/05/2024

Played this back in 2010 on 360 and remembered it being very average. Picked this one up for just over £1 and thought I'd give it a go. Definitely aged badly and playing through on Hard just made this process longer than I would have liked. Whilst it's not a terrible game by any means, it's certainly not very good and I wouldn't recommend it now. It all feels very dated in my opinion and some of the encounters are frustrating. 4/10

7. Boltgun (PC/Steam Deck) - Finished 03/06/2024

I picked this one up on release last year and played through a few maps, but dropped it for whatever reason. I saw it in my library and decided to play through the rest of it with this challenge in mind. This is a damn good time and although it is purposefully retro looking, it plays so god damn well and looks amazing. I was playing on hard and lowered to normal on the second chapter since some of the purge sections felt a little to sweaty for my liking. Perfect length too! Only took me 10 hours to beat and that was with some exploration on maps and looking for a few secrets here and there. It wasn't perfect and I wouldn't play through the campaign again I don't think, but I am looking forward to the DLC. 8/10

8. Mullet Madjack (PC) - Finished 11/06/2024

Played the demo and it instantly went onto my wish list before release. It knows exactly what it is trying to be and executes it flawlessly. The game play is extremely fast and frenetic but has a great sense of flow to it if you can think on your feet and use the right tools at the right moment. Gory, fun and has a great sense of humour. I tried this on my Steam Deck and whilst it is more than playable and the performance is great, mouse and keyboard is the way to play this one in my opinion, it's just so fast! It's a very short game when playing through the campaign (2.7 hours with a number of deaths on the later floors) but this is very re-playable. A very easy 9/10.

9. Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3) - Finished 30/06/2024

I really felt like playing some older titles from previous generations and grabbed a PS3 with a bunch of games. I never played this one so made it the first title I went through.

I wrapped it up today and I'm in two minds with it. On the one hand it has some interesting weapons, it's linear and doesn't suffer with all the tropes of modern gaming and some parts of it are genuinely fun (tank missions were a hoot). That being said, it has the worst checkpoint system, the enemies are sponges unless you land a few shots to the head consistently and some of the levels are just fucking frustrating. I liked more of it than I disliked though. 6/10

10. Tekken 8 (PS5) - Finished 25/07/2024

Started playing this near launch and dropped it as I had other bits going on. Felt like playing a fighter and I was not disappointed. I've always enjoyed Tekken since combos are nice and easy to string together even for casuals and it looks flashy at the same time despite button mashing.

Fun story mode that probably only took around 3 hours to get through. My only gripes are the last two chapters that see you fight the same guy 3 or 4 times each and the cutscenes weren't for me so I just skipped them. 8/10

11. Uncharted (PS5)

I've never played the first Uncharted game and after finishing the first one (courtesy of the Nathan Drake Collection) I don't know why I hadn't played this sooner. What a fantastic game that knows not to outstay it's welcome.

There are a couple of mildly frustrating platform sections and maybe a couple of combat encounters that were not my favourites, but it's a fantastic game and I have had such a great time with it. 9/10

12. Mirrors Edge (PS3)

Played this as I got it included in a game bundle with the PS3 I bought. I didn't love this game on release, it was OK but definitely not worth all the hype in my opinion. Safe to say that I really really didn't like the second playthrough, awkward platforming in sections and the combat is dreadful. God knows why they decided to double down on the combat in the final third of the game. 4/10

That's a wrap for me this year, it was fun to take part in this challenge and I was able to play through some of my backlog finally. I'll continue to update this though I guess until the end of the year.

I won't include games where I'm playing through DLC and/or completing stuff just to get all of the achievements/trophies (ex. CP2077, Gotham Knights). There may be some other games I try and beat along the way but this is my "main" list.

1. Starfield (XSX) - 5 hrs in, I really like it. Sticking with this one through completion.
2. Wanted: Dead (XSX) - very close to finishing it up.
3. Bloodborne (PS4) - 9 hrs in, its amazing.
4. Sekiro (PS4) - maybe 20% done.
5. Ninja Blade (X360) - about 30% done.
6. Infamous 2 (PS3) - about 25% done.
7. Battle Chasers: Nightwar (PS4) - 60% done.
8. Bayonetta 3 (Switch) - close to done.
9. Elden Ring (XSX) - 9 hrs in, no clue how far I am.
10. Like A Dragon: Ishin (PS5) - not started.
11. Sword and Fairy (PS5) - not started.
12. Hogwarts: Legacy (XSX) - not started.

Cool.

January: It will be a split between Cyberpunk 2077, Nioh 2 (New game ++++) and GoW Ragnarok.

I finished yesterday Nioh 2 NG++, so maybe I will keep playing it until I complete all difficulty modes... However, I am also casually playing GoW Ragnarok and Cyberpunk 2077. Talking about Cyberpunk, last night I played it a little bit and I think it finally "clicked" with me and I started enjoying it a lot.

So honestly I dunno which one I will finish first this month.

February: FFVII Remake

I will finish it again while waiting for FFVII Rebirth.

March: FFVII Rebirth

Following months: Granblue Relink, Dragons Dogma 2 and Rise of The Ronin.

Sounds fun. Don't have a list but here is what I can foresee the next four- six months:

1. TLOU 1 (PS5- currently ongoing)
2. Cyberpunk 2077 (PC- 2nd playthrough then going for the DLC).
3. TLOU 2 (PS5)
4. FFVII Rebirth (PS5)
5. Plague Tale Requiem (PC)
6. Forza Motorsport (PC)
7. Elden Ring (PS5- may wait for PS5 pro tho or get on PC when cheap).

I’ll add more as I go. Great idea!

Great thread cormack12 cormack12 .

20/01/24 - Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Completed this with my 4 year old, who received the game as a Christmas present. I really enjoyed this game, the vibrancy of the levels, the fact that you can play as Yoshi for an easy mode. I would strongly recommend this game, it’s excellent.

24/02/24 - Pokémon Legends Arceus. Final play time 20 hours 15 minutes. 172 Pokémon seen, 132 caught. Really surprised by this game, best Pokémon since Emerald. This was my profile on my Switch, my son is also playing this through separately and I’m trying to help him complete the dex so he can meet Arceus. Another easy recommendation.

16/03/24 - Kingdoms of Amular Re-reckoning. Final play time 15 hours. Difficult one to recommend this, it showed its age. It’s a linear action game, I ran with a great hammer build. The Legend of Dead Kel was really disappointing IMO, but Teeth of Naros was one of the better parts of the game. I thought the traversal was absolutely pants. On a true scale of 10 I’d probably give this a 6.5.

24/03/24 - Bioshock Remastered. Wow, odd one for me. For the first 2 hours I had no idea what was going on. Combat wise I thought it seemed a standard shooter, the maps seemed complicated and story wise I had no clue. As the game progressed it got better and better IMO. Combat became a joy, I familiarised myself with the level and mission design and got some sort of semblance from the story. The credits have just rolled, I’d give that an 8/10. Really good game.

30/03/24 - Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Posted my thoughts here: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/rlttp-banjo-kazooie-grunty’s-revenge.1669036/ really pleasant little game (100% in 4 hours 45 mins).

04/04/24 - Super Mario 64. Chipped away at this for 3 months. What more can be said? Absolute 10/10 classic. I’ve not completed this since I played through the DS version. What a game, played on Switch Oled through NSO.

EnW9aRd.jpeg

21/04/24 - Metroid Prime Remastered. First ever play through of a Metroid Prime game. This was really great, it took me a lot longer to get my bearings directionally in comparison to Dread though. I’d jump on 2 & 3 Remastered if Nintendo drop them. I love the difficulty, the platforming is great - the combat with normal enemies was the only so-so aspect I thought, but boss fights are great.

20/06/24 - Bowser’s Fury. I’m not counting this in my total as I view it as a DLC and not standalone. Finished with 60 Cat Shines. Fun short romp. I’ve seen some comments that this should be the future of Mario. I’m not so sure. I missed the dynamism and range of movement from Odyssey.
Giga Plessie belly flopping Bowser in to oblivion was a pretty funny and unexpected ending, can’t lie.

04/07/24 - Portal 2. Enjoyable game, better than the first in my opinion, first time I’ve ever played through the game. I know this is supposedly a certified classic so I might be crucified for this, but I thought it was an hour or so too long.

06/08/24 - The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (remake). First ever play through of this, the credits have just rolled. Complicated one. Loved Koholint Island, its characters and the story concept. My issue is with the obtuseness of the game. Go and get a banana from a monkey in a forest, trade it with an old lady in a village who needs it for her banana bread and get a hand grenade in return, use the hand grenade to blow up a natural rock formation in a desert to create a bridge. This is some old school game design and it didn’t translate for me. I needed a guide towards the end just to avoid a needless time sink.

12/09/24 - GTA V. First time I’ve ever managed to compete this (tried on 360, PS4 and now Steak Deck). First game I started on my Deck and this time it clicked. Rockstar have made another exceptional open world here, I have 63 hours clocked at the end of it all, and haven’t touched online yet. Pros; I like Franklin and Micheal, I like the focus on heists and as always with GTA linking in with associates who later become enemies. Cons; I think Trevor is really poorly written. I can’t believe Rockstar actually wrote such a childish character: Hahaha he’s just raped Lloyd, hilarious. If we’re supposed to think he’s despicable, it doesn’t really happen because those moments are thrown in randomly alongside other humanising moments in the main campaign.
Overall a great immersive game which surprised me by managing to call to me every day.

28/09/24 - Halo CE (MCC). Another I’m not counting as it’s my second play-through. Did a run on easy to mop up some remaining achievements on Steam Deck, unlocked an additional 41 through the skulls, some terminals and the miscellaneous challenges/easter eggs.

01/12/24 - Banjo Tooie. Completed this game via NSO. Last time I completed this game was probably over 15 years ago. Got to Grunty Industries and ran out of steam. Only got 2 Jiggies on this level, 10/10 on Hailfire Peaks and then as soon as I got my 70th Jiggy on Cloud Cukoo Land I was out of there.

mtg2Mji.jpeg

Save scummed the last Grunty fight, the Joy Cons make it ridiculously tricky to aim so I don’t care.

15 hours, I can 100% Kazooie in 5-6. It’s not the size of the levels or interconnectivity that make this game end up dragging for me, it’s that Pterodactyl Land (as much as I love the theme) and Grunty Industries back to back are just 2 really poorly designed levels that make you feel lost and this is the first time you can say that in the franchise. It’s too much and it’s why I always run out of steam when I get to Pterodactyl Land whenever I’ve tried to replay this game. I’ve pushed though this time but wow I’ve not enjoyed the last 3-4 hours of it.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Baldurs Gate 3.

Not sure if I can finish it before Feb. I'm off out of country for almost a month, and I'm afraid if I haven't finished BG3 by then, I will have little to no inclination to pick it up after a months break.

Now this one I can do. Usually get to 20 games a year, sometimes more if there’s a few short ones.

1. First up for me is Super Mario RPG. Just started it this weekend, will see how it goes.
Edit: Fun game and I can see why people loved it in the 90s. Still pretty good but it just makes me want to play Paper Mario - those games are so much better it's not even close.

2. Paper Mario. SMRPG put me in the mood for this, and it holds up a lot better. The first two Paper Mario games are the best of the Mario RPGs, by a pretty large margin. I am excited to play the TTYD remake later this year.

3. I started Crisis Core Reunion, never played it before and really have no knowledge of Zack's story. It's a lot more fun than I thought, probably due to the battle system being revamped. There's no hiding it's a souped up PSP game, but still having a good time regardless. Hopefully the voice acting gets better, Zack's VA has been pretty terrible through chapter 4. Sounds like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Edit: Ended up liking it, though the story really derailed near the end and the voice acting didn't really improve. Gameplay was solid and I did like the story overall, really made me care about Zack.

4. FFVII Rebirth - My GOTY so far, it made me feel like a kid again. Seems like the first RPG of this scale being made to modern AAA standards, incredible achievement and I loved my time with it aside from a few crappy minigames. Final verdict on the story will very much depend on part 3, but I love the game regardless. That Queen's Blood theme is stuck in my head even now.

5. Helldivers 2 - I love and hate the game. It's a lot of fun and up my alley as a squad based co-operative FPS. But the game is constantly in a broken state and only getting worse, with the dev team focusing on creating new content and then nerfing the shit out of everything that was fun, while ignoring the game breaking bugs. I spent a lot of time with it and crossplay has been broken for literally months. If they ever fixed it, this game would be in the top for the year, but until then it doesn't even rank. Huge missed opportunity.

6. I had high hopes for Minit as a short and refreshing, new take on the Zelda formula from an indie dev. But instead of a short romp that does the genre well (like Gato Roboto) it was a shallow and gimmicky experience that will not stay with me. There is a ton of potential, but the game is really just a few obvious puzzles strung together by a timer and reset. It could have done a lot more. The game was so short it doesn't really count in this list, only about 2 hours tops.

7. Animal Well was really great actually. It came out on May 9th and was basically a combination of Halo 2 and Halo 3 (much like Halo 5). Open world style puzzle game with many different ways to complete its objectives, and an absurd amount of post-game puzzles and meta quests. Billy Basso did an awesome job here, I really loved everything about it including the art style and music. Highly recommended. The only thing I didn't really enjoy is to what extent the later puzzles relied on information from outside of the game. With that said, it doesn't detract much from the experience, puzzle and indie fans should play this. Dunkey fans too.

8. Disco Elysium was recommended often to me, but I waited for it to hit PS+ and finally got around to playing it. Didn't go in expecting much, and at first it seemed like a pretentious novel with an agenda. It sort of was, but I ended up really enjoying the game for its strong role playing mechanics and the interesting story (with a few really great characters). It went on sale for $4 on Steam during the Summer sale and I bought to revisit one day where I'll do a completely different kind of character. Even if the story beats remain mostly the same, it will be a fun journey doing things in a different way with another build.

9. The Last Guardian - what a difficult game to explain. Shadow of the Colossus is one of my favorite games of all time, and I also loved Ico. The Last Guardian was frustrating at times, but also rewarding and very special. Ultimately I didn't like the game as much as its predecessors, due to the mechanics of its gameplay - which often worked too well in portraying Trico as a living, breathing companion. Still a worthwhile experience and well made art, though not as much fun as a video game.

10. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Remake. Absolute joy in RPG form, if it were not just a remake I'd probably list it as my GOTY. It's a nearly flawless remake of a beloved game. The updated visuals, music, and quality of life improvements kept in line with the original while making it feel modern. That's about as high praise as I can give, it felt like a Bluepoint remake. Must play for anyone who wants to know why the newer Mario RPGs get hated on so much, and I hope it's a return to form for Nintendo.

11. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. I count this since it had more content than most entire games. The exploration and lore is From at their peaks, and the majority of the boss fights are among the most intense in the series. The first few bosses were extremely rewarding, but toward the end there were a few buggy/overtuned bosses that really decreased my enjoyment, but it was still an impressive offering regardless. I was looking for a good excuse to revisit the game and I'm very glad I did.

Wow, so I am definitely going to nail the goal of 12 completed games this year, even if I choose some other long ones from here on out. There's no way I'd reach close to 52 from the other thread, but will likely land in the mid 20s at this rate when all's said and done.

Up next: Armored Core VI, Super Mario Wonder

1. Tchia. Completed, apart from the diving and shooting gold trophies and the exasperating music sections. It was a delightful little game full of charm and well worth the sojourn. It's rather sad to see how few owners have been awarded any of the PlayStation 4 trophies. Just finding all 10 docks was less than 5% giving the impression that many owners have given up before getting anywhere. I enjoyed this charming little game so much that I was happy to go back into the game after the story was finished to complete the bits I missed, including the extensive treasure hunt. 7/10
2. Stray. Finished and as much as I admire the graphics I was left rather cold by the whole game, and gameplay, apart from the very end.

I do miss the days when I would hit 50+ games in a year.
Actually did over 100 a few times.

For 2024:
1. Mario Wonder was a Christmas present from my wife

Husky

THE Prey 2 fanatic
I finished Pokémon Shield recently (I bought a Switch!), but I started that last year. I'll start with a game I started a couple days ago.

I always play through one single-player game at a time, and usually I don't know what I'm going to play next until I've just about finished the game. I have access to a gigantic (9000+) Family Share library on Steam, so I'm pretty spoiled with options.

1 - Deathloop
Original: Right now I'm pretty unimpressed. The gunplay is fine. The AI is some of the worst I've seen in a really long time, and the dialogue's pretty bad. I also recently played Outer Wilds, an absolutely outstanding game set in a time loop, so Deathloop doesn't really have any novelty to me. I don't think the game excels at anything, but it's a little bit interesting to see FPS mechanics mixed with time loop puzzle mechanics, even if neither the FPS nor the time loop elements compare well to other games.

Dropped: This game has some of the worst AI I've ever seen in a video game, excluding stuff like asset flips. The enemy AI is honestly probably worse than in Aliens: Colonial Marines. The game incorporates some great ideas and mechanics that were mastered in other titles, but in combining these ideas Deathloop just makes me wish I was playing a better shooter, a better stealth game, a better roguelite, or a better time loop game. The writing was just painful. I also found the game to be pretty buggy, which I usually don't hold against a game, since I usually find them pretty easy to work around. One bug would repeatedly get me stuck on menus that wouldn't load though, and that meant I was routinely rebooting the game.

1 - Advance Wars (Switch)
I thought this was fine, but I wish I could turn the story mode off and just play through the levels. Lots of the time it felt like a level was built with just one strategy in mind, which made my victories feel less satisfying, since I didn't feel like I'd outsmarted my enemy, so much as I'd successfully stuck to the course determined by the level designers. Fun enough.

2 - Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu!
Pretty fun. I like the customization, but of course I'd like if it was more in-depth, or if there was more variety in the outfits. Outfits only vary in texture, and share the same model. That's fine, and it's better than no customization.
I don't think I'd like more Pokémon games designed like this, but I can enjoy it as a one-off. The Pikachu in this game is wicked cool.

3 - Resident Evil 4 (2023) + Separate Ways
This was fun. Didn't care much for Separate Ways (and why is the Ada Wong voice acting so amateur in comparison to everyone else?). I did miss the exploration focus of RE1 and RE2, but the action was pretty tight. I'd like to play the Wii version sometime, I'm a big fan of motion aiming, and a lot of people told me the original had better atmosphere.

4 - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Switch)
I'm a really big fan of the Krome Studios version of The Force Unleashed, which I insist is superior to the LucasArts version. Had a great time playing the Switch release. I collected about 75% of the holocrons! Primarily used a yellow lightsaber, that's always been a favorite of mine.

5 - NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...
I fell in love within the first half hour, and after about six hours of playtime the effect had worn off. The gameplay's really dull, the combat's so repetitive, easy, and boring, but worst of all the writing. The dialogue's so goddamn stupid. Apparently the story does something really cool later on, and I'm pretty sure the story's told over multiple playthroughs, but I'm not gonna slog through this awful writing just to check if there's something redeemable later on. I don't trust them to hit the mark. Also not sure why this game even has sidequests, since they're given so little effort. The whole open world mechanic seems pointless in this game. I guess it makes it easier for the game to justify constantly recycling its maps? Music was impressive at first, but it plays on a very short loop, and quickly becomes annoying.
Dropped after about 13 hours.

5 - The Forgotten City
This was really cool. Played each ending. I'd like to give the original Skyrim mod a go sometime.

6 - Mass Effect 2: Legendary Edition
Oh man, I knew I loved this game, but I really forgot how awesome it was. ME1 kind of failed to recapture my heart, but not ME2. What a sick game. I ended up using mods to bypass the hacking minigames, since they got repetitive, and to fully mine a planet after one probe, again so I could just bypass the repetitiveness. I also used an unofficial patch and a mod that corrected some of the lighting mistakes of the remaster.
Mechanically the game feels pretty simple now, but I'm still so into it. This was also my first time playing a lot of the game's DLC.

7 - Saints Row (2022)
Played four and a half hours. Think I've had enough. I can see a lot of Agents of Mayhem in the DNA for this game, but not a lot of Saints Row in there.

7 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
This was a replay, wth a mod to add c-stick camera control, and my New 3DS CPU running at full speed to improve performance. Fantastic game. I never finished Majora's Mask, so I plan to try the 3DS version again, with a major mod overhaul that's meant to bring some gameplay elements more in line with the original.

8 - Hi-Fi Rush
I don't have any problem with this game, but I don't care enough to finish it. I'd just be forcing myself through because I know everyone else likes it.

8 - Terminator: Resistance
This is basically exactly what I want from a Terminator game. The shooting feels great, and the open level design is rewarding to explore. At first the gameplay is pretty tense, as you have to sneak around more powerful machines (which your guns can't even damage at first), but by the end of the game you can be a total killing machine.
I actually got 100% of the achievements, which was a total accident, because I don't achievement hunt. I also played on Hard mode. I would've played on Extreme, but it had lower XP rewards, which I know I'd find less fun.

9 - Mass Effect 3: Legendary Edition
This was fun, but the endings sure suck. The combat was really easy, and the only times I died were when I willingly stepped into poisonous gas to see what would happen, and during a Reaper fight—the one on Thessia—when the weapon I was given didn't work until I reloaded. I didn't use any healing items. I should've played on hard mode.
There were definitely some gameplay improvements over ME2, but overall ME2 recaptured my imagination much more than ME3 did.

10 - Pokémon Legends: Arceus
This game feels unfinished to me, like it should have a watermark in the corner denoting this as an alpha build. It's better than Sun/Moon, but worse than any other Pokemon game. I really like the customization.
Dropped during the post-game stuff, I'm not gonna finish the Pokédex to catch Arceus. The game's much too bland and repetitive.

11 - Biomutant
This was pretty fun, even though the open world activities were very generic, and the dialogue's so bad. None of the quests were at all interesting, but the world really captured my imagination. Very nice-looking too. I played the dead-eye class, as a cat.
I really appreciated how much freedom I was given to explore the world. I was able to access areas that clearly weren't really intended to be gameplay zones, or areas I wasn't supposed to be able to access yet, but it felt like the developers weren't really trying to stop me from reaching them if I really wanted. I found areas where models lacked collisions or weren't textured on every side, and with empty buildings just serving as facades to be seen from afar. There are these giant roots you can see from all areas of the map, but unfortunately you can't climb them. I managed to reach one, and it didn't have any collision.

12 - Gloomwood
This was okay. I wasn't interested enough to finish it.

12 - Tales from Off-Peak City Vol. 1
I really liked Off-Peak, and I really liked this game too! The surreal world's awesome.

13 - Assassin's Creed Valhalla
wJipGVC.png

I wasted way too much time on this game. It's such a painful grind, and stupidly easy even with all the difficulty settings cranked up. I kept playing because there was always something I wanted to at least check out, but inevitably everything I found was just a disappointment.
The game's a downgrade from Odyssey in every way. The combat's worse, the leveling system's worse, the gear system is worse, the world has so much less personality (well, it is England), the characters and quests are all worse, and the fun bounty hunters are gone. The AI's abysmal, it's some of the worst I've seen in a video game—reminded me of Deathloop, actually. There's also strangely little loot for a viking game. Finally, characters kept referring to me as "she," even though I played as a male :lollipop_neutral:
Pictured: I told my friend I needed to quit Valhalla. I then resumed Valhalla. I've uninstalled it now.

13 - Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition
I wasn't sure whether I'd prefer the original release or the fully raytraced version, since in comparison videos the original looked more atmospheric. I went with the raytraced version to see how it looked in action, and this is the first time in ages that a game's really stunned me visually. It looks absolutely insane. Even when I can see the limits of the textures and models, the lighting makes everything look amazingly realistic. I keep wanting to reach out and touch everything. It feels like being in a lucid dream (where I have looked at things close up, and inspected the look and feel of the world).
I had a great time with this game.

14 - Mass Effect: Andromeda
I think I'm dropping this. It's just another soulless timesink like AC Valhalla.

14 - Portal with RTX
I'm not really sure what to say. I wanted to look at Portal with raytracing. Cool.

Update:

1. FF7 Remake completed on PS5. Wasn't anything amazing for me, but I can respect why people would have loved it back in the PS1 days (and yes I know it wasn't a full remake of the whole game). 7/10

Earlier post updated.

Just completed Tinykin. Not sure if I'll go for 100% but I had fun with it in short bursts. I'd play it an hour every other day or so otherwise would get burnt out.

Love the art style with 2D characters on the 3D environments. Controls felt great and the platforming was perfect.

I loved Pillars of Eternity II. Such a great CRpg.
Looking forward to it! I loved the gameplay from Pillars 1, and I've been told that it got even better in 2, as well as having a better story (?). The only thing holding me back is that it's probably going to be another 70+ hour RPG, which is why something relatively smaller like Tyranny looks tempting as well.

Noob Question
How do I edit my post to update games? I don't see any edit button.
You should be able to see Edit in the bottom left, next to Report.

This has been kind of a good idea tbh. It's pushed me to go back and clear out some weight from the backlog. So I'm currently playing through ffvii remake, and now up to chapter 14 so I'll be able to add that soon as well

Oh cool, I didn't know if there was a game completion thread on Gaf, and this looks to be a bit more doable than the 52 one. I can't really plan out the year since I usually just pick up whatever game on a whim, especially since I tend to delve into a lot of retro games.

January: Evolution: World of Sacred Device (Dreamcast) - A decent little JRPG, nothing great with a paper thin story and a very predictable plot twist, but still an ok RPG on a system with not many RPGs to play.

Bombrush Cyberfunk (Switch) - A fucking fantastic game that captures the spirit of Jet Grind Radio far better than I figured it would. If you like JGR at all, give this game a play!

February: Shadowrun (SNES) - Really solid game, I played this originally when I was young and couldn't wrap my head around it, but I really enjoyed this playthrough.

I also finished Side Order Splatoon 3 DLC, which I really enjoyed.

March: Nothing. I spent all month playing Octopath Traveler II and I got close to finishing all of the character's storylines in March, but I still had a couple left at the end of the month.

April: Octopath Traveler II - I completed everything in the game except for the super boss Galdera, that fight is some bullshit lol, and after 115 ish hours in Octo II I was ready to move on, but God damn what an amazing game!

May: Nada. May was busy for me IRL, and I only started a bit into Unicorn Overlord.

June: Unicorn Overlord - What a fantastic game. I really enjoyed my time with it, the visuals pull you in, but the gameplay will keep you hooked. Play this game if you haven't!

July: Doom 3 (Switch) - Good game, but not a good Doom game, and they absolutely gutted the shotgun which is a staple weapon for the Doom games. It's still fun, but it is my least favorite Doom game I have played.

Ninja Warriors (SNES) - A fun game, I played it because it's the SNES subreddit game of the month and I don't ever recall playing through it back in the day (even though I rented it a couple of times). It's a short playthrough, but a pretty good fun game even if it gets a bit repetitive by the end.

Monster Hunter Stories (3DS) - I have slowly been working on this one for months. I enjoyed it....but honestly it really made me just want to play a mainline MH game lol. Good for people who would want more of an RPG approach to the series. It is good, and it's well made, but falls very short of the fun and satisfaction I get from any of the mainline titles.

August: Contra III: The Alien War (SNES) - Another SNES subreddit game of the month game. It wasn't my first playthrough of the game, but it was the first time I was able to beat it on hard. The game is still fucking awesome to this day.

Fire Emblem Warriors - I really enjoyed Hyrule Warriors and was really expecting to love this game, I really like warrior's titles and the fire Emblem series. This game ended up being a fairly big disappointment, the gameplay is mostly ok (not a fan of the weapon triangle system here), but holy fuck anytime any of these characters open their stupid fucking mouths I wanted to shut the game off, I also didn't feel like the maps flowed as well as in other warrior's games, and the two main protagonists are both equally as fucking unappealing as the other. What a complete letdown.

Metroid Prime Remastered - A serviceable remaster of an amazing classic game. I enjoyed this a lot.

September: Emio: The Smilling Man - I wasn't sure if i would like this or not since I really haven't ever dived into a visual novel game before, but I did really enjoy my play with this. It helps that while the artsyle may be an anime type style none of the characters acted dumb or tropey, and everything felt grounded in reality. It's also interesting to see Nintendo dive into some very mature and underlying fucked up situations that occur in this game. Admittedly there isn't really much "gameplay" so I don't know if I would ever come back for a second visit, but the story hooked me in and it was a great ride all the way to the credits (the post game scenario is a hell of a ride too).

October: Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) - I have been working on this one for a bit, I really enjoyed it and see why it's often praised, especially since the Dreamcast is starved for JRPGs. The high as fuck random encounter rate and slow combat did start to wear on me, but this was still a damn good game.

The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom - I am super happy to still see Zelda games done in this style (not fully open world like BotW and TotK), because I think both styles should and can exist. I enjoyed the game and thought it was a good time, I did have a few issues with it and it's probably one of the weaker Zelda titles, but it's still a good game.

  2. Monster Hunter Worlds & Iceborne. Started playing before & dropped quickly for reasons. Trying again. It's 2 bloody different games basically!

My honest advice? Mainline the story until you get the broom

I loved the game, but its bloated. You could cut out the Southern section on the map & most of the Merlin trails. Spent too much time in RoR & then it changed size & ruined the layout!

Completed the story after about 70hrs of playtime, though I was vastly overpowered towards the end so you could skip some sidequests to bring time down!

I loved this game!

I had played this at a friend's house ages ago, but had since forgotten about it, then I saw it the Top Gun version is on sale for about £11

Ive been playing it on and off since then and I love it! I don't play flight games, so have been surprised how much I like this, it is also my first AC game, so I have no idea about backstory or history, but I didn't feel held back by this as a newcomer

The story is ridiculous! I do think I'll understand it a bit more if I watch the cinematic mission replays, to catch all the radio chatter that I miss due to concentrating on killing things

And that full name...If you've played the campaign you'll know exactly what I'm talking about lol 😆

Good selection of classes/skills/guns. It looks & sounds perfect. Runs can be done quickly, 15-30 mins depending on how comfortable you are with the layout and waves, interesting challenge cards to increase difficulty/rewards

Fully completed the missions & collected the intel, most of the weapons/attachments/perks & im slowly leveling guns & loadouts!

Pretty comfortable on intense with the helper bots, looking to push onto the next difficulties, but it looks like I need other humans to help out with the higher difficulties

3/10 AC game
8/10 Pirate game

Rose tinted nostalgic glasses have given me a warped view of Black Flag. It's about 10 years since I played it on the 360, and I remember loving it! Since then Ubi have made some vast improvements to thier games (much better traversal/climbing), and also taken horrible steps backwards (making massive, uninteresting maps filled with pointless collectables)

Black Flag as a pirate game in a decent sized world is awesome. Upgrading the Jackdaw, sailing further into harder areas, taking on bigger ships & forts. Even the side activities like diving to wrecks, whale hunting & raiding Plantations are fun & quick enough to not outstay their welcome. The cast of characters is fun to be around, and hits hard when certain characters get killed in the story

Black Flag as an AC game is terrible. The controls for Edward are the worst Ive come across by far since Ive gone back to complete the various AC games I'd started & abandoned over the years. An over abundance of "listen to these boring conversations whilst staying in this tiny circle" missions. The Assassin/Templar story is stupid & the real life/current time missions are pointless & only harm the pacing

If you are on the water, the game is a joy, sailing about listening to Pirate Shanties, plundering, boarding ships & looks gorgeous!
On the land its a slog of a game, that controls horribly, looks very dated & has the worst of Ubi/AC faults

I am literally at the end of the story (just escaped from the Observatory and killed Roberts), having done 11of the 13 main story missions, but I am so bored and tired of the game I'm finding it hard to just do the last few missions to "complete" it

I had been looking forward to both the upcoming, and very late, pirate game from Ubi, and the potential Black Flag remake, but replaying this now, Im done with it. If I want my pirate fix I can load up this and sail around for 30 minutes

8/10 (Slightly biased score from an Alien fan I admit, but I enjoyed it immensely. Doesn't fuck with the main Alien story/lore)

I love (most modern) alien games, but I'm also a bit of a wuss, so I only play them for short bursts or I exhaust myself, so to have an Aliens game that's a mix of Fallout Shelter/Xcom base building, Xcom soldier training/upgrades & RTS with an ever angrier alien threat, gives me more room to breath & play in a way I like

Ive completed the story, dont know if I have the nerve to go through it on harder difficulties. Im considering this "complete" for the challenege

7.5/10 (due to the DLC stories/weapons. Good game with not enough enemy varieties, nothing special about story that I'll remember 1 year from now) Without DLC -1.5 off the score. It was really that, that saved the score!

The Spacers Edition was a new game that appeared recently on PS+, I've been unpatiently waiting on the best Bethesda game in the last few years to turn up, that's right... Starfield Fallout4 update, so this scratched that itch a little

On paper, character upgrades look good, with lots of areas to improve or upgrade depending on the character you want to spec out, but realistically most of the stats were pointless except for main-ing one of the speech skills & tech/science. Without these you'll miss huge portions of the game with constant checks for speech & getting into rooms/secret areas or on computers, or upgrading weapons/armour with both Sci/Tech

It's fine & standard as RPG's go. The main story was a little daft, but we're in the future with wacky science stuff going on, so it is what it is. I much preferred the DLC story "Murder..." even if it is a rehash of various other tropes/films/TV series/games. "Peril..." was good too, but should have been main game story in my opinion

I assume they are making a 2nd one? I'd play it if they did

Not as good as FO4, but looked prettier, loaded much, much faster & had more colours than just brown/grey/green, which was nice!

Firstly, the store says that by buying the game you get the PS5+PS4 version. There's no such thing as a PS5 version of this game. It got cancelled, so you're stuck with the fine looking, but slower loading PS4 version. Meh. Feel free to private msg me if you want to know more and I'll dissuade you from buying it hopefully!

Platinum in about 18hours or so over a few weeks. It looks quite pretty, but it's very repetitive. Enjoyed the story, though it became very predictable early on. Got bored after about half way (around the time I'd got most of the powers and perks, so had nothing to look forward to regarding upgrading the team), so lowered the settings to easy and blasted through as quickly as possible

There's a little clean up needed after the story, meaning you need to do a partial playthrough again to pick up a few things you miss that added a few extra uneeded hours

Personally I think FO4 gets a bad rep. I liked it from day one when I originally played it back on the PS4. I liked it so much I played it on the Xbox1 too. Its not perfect, it's a buggy mess at times, and the engine is showing its age, but it scratches something that I can't get anywhere else, or at least I've not found it anywhere else

I'm way over powered, at level 170, I've spent about 250 hours in world. Some of that time is just building settlements, some was story, but a large part is just wandering and interacting with Boston, trying to get all the special traders, farming legendry weapons, collecting all the variations of power armour....

As well as finishing up this playthrough for the last few trophies, I'm planning on starting a new playthrough, modded as much as possible and starting with run with NukaWorld then going to help Preston

I enjoy Sniper Elite games. I like slow, methodical, stealthy games, and they get very slightly better each time, although being honest I preferred 4 to 5

5, in some levels, was less about being a sniper and more like CoD lol. I've purposely just done level runs where I've used a machine gun to run through, picking up enemy weapons to replenish ammo or replace an empty weapon. I felt 4 was much more "open", 5 had lots of tight, close quarter sections. No major issue with that, I enjoyed the game enough to buy all the DLC for it (and shoot Hitler in the dick obviously), I just think they're not as open on some levels

If you liked any of the others, you'll like this. Simple as

The game was good. But not brilliant hence the score. The first 50 hours are 7 or 8 score worthy, but as with a lot of these types of games, some of the trophies are there to just inflate your time in the game. A lot of padding that started to bore me, lots of get to day 100 type things. Well, to be honest, you've probably got everything sorted by day 20, so it's just lots of waiting around dealing with minor annoyances

Theres just a lack of effort I feel with this, compared to other Paradox games. I still feel engaged in Stellaris after hundreds of hours, Crusader Kings 2 is always fun if also difficult, even another "survivng" game with Surviving Mars has more to keep you interested and playing, and the Frontier sandbox/sim builders are also more "interesting", Jurassic World Evolution/2, Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo...cant help but think they dropped the ball on this one a bit

Some of the mentioned games I load up even now, after hundreds of hours, after platting, just to play and relax. StA, will be deleted and never reinstalled

Visusal Novel with a few puzzle elements and specific story choices leading to specfic endings. Some save game manipulating can decrease playthroughs, but to 100%, you'll need 1 perfect playthrough and 2 or 3 partials

Its fine but looks very dated, though it is an older game so didnt expect much. Story was ok, got a tad too strange in places. Had the game in my backlog for years. Used this as a palate cleaner from playing other much longer ongoing games, needed a small, quick, linear game. May do a few smaller games in a row now before diving into a longer game again. Helps get my backlog in order too

Another quick, linear, "easy" game to break up the bigger, longer games I've completed or are still continuing to play

Not sure if I bought this year's ago, or it was a PS+ game from years ago, either way, it's been in my backlog for far too long, saw that it can be finished in a few hours, so finally can hide it in my PS5 games library

The game is fine, good even, at what it does. Nothing complicated, you can interact with lots of things to gain more insight/lore/story or make your way through this story driven game quickly and make up your own idea of what is going on. Interesting game that follows the "the more you put in, the more you'll get out" rule

Sherlock Holmes Crimes & Punishment, I played this slowly, 1 case a week, with my parents as an interactive version of the Space Cowboys Sherlock Holmes tabletop games. It's gone surprisingly well. I control Sherlock but allow them to direct me and make the choices of where to go, who to talk to, what to look at, who to accuse...

This is more interactive and visual, but I would say the cases are simpler than the tabletop games, but still enjoyable. My parents were very impressed with things though, again, they havn't been spoiled by graphics, frames per second, teraflops....I could see the game is dated slightly. They enjoyed seeing an 1800's London portrayed on the screen.

We will play the other Sherlock games in a similar fashion now I know it's gone down well. Playing on my own, I'd probably have rated this a 5, or 5.5, it's perfectly fine, but we made nights out of it, getting together, ordering a pizza or eating snacks, a few beers or G&T's, it helped to play together, in a nice environment

On to "The Testament of..." next!

6/10

I'd played this previously when it first came out (the Definitive Edition) and obviously got bored or distracted half way through

A nice, perfectly fine game, decent-ish reboot for Tomb Raider. Even looks pretty decent now. Nothing annoyed me with it. The "tombs" are very easy. I got through the game very quickly. Its either much shorter than I remember or my prior knowledge let me get through quickly. If you weren't bothered about collecting certain things or doing side quests, you could probably run through this game in 3 or 4 hours? Nothing bad to say about it other than its not mind blowingly brilliant

Some MP trophies can be cheesed Solo, but the others are a grind. The servers also seem dodgy half the time. I did what I could, I'm now done

I saw this was leaving PS+ so I needed to finish my half done playthrough. That in itself should tell you something

Big, 1st party Sony game, and I'd left it half done at some point a year ago

The game is fine. Its very pretty. Lots to do and see. It's just....a bit boring, and Aloy is constantly talking to herself, outloud, about anything and everything. Shut the hell up girl

I actually enjoyed playing these last few hours even though I'd forgotten what the hell was going on, as I've taken a good break from the game where I'd apparently tried to uncover the map and do every little task. Fuck that. I mainlined the last few missions and stuff I needed for trophies. Much better experience

Thinking about it now, I did a similar thing with the 1st game. Started it, abandoned, then went back to it when I got the DLC for super cheap and did a streamlined playthrough and enjoyed it much more 🤔

I will actually buy this, preferably with the DLC, at some stage, but with a deep discount and put way back in the backlog of games to buy and complete

Okay, I have mixed feelings with that score I gave. I could easily increase it by increments of .5 upto 6/10 depending on when you ask me about it

From what I gather, this is the dev's first "biggish" game, and for that I praise them, especially porting it to PS5 and having slight improvements with graphics

My issue with it is that it's boring and bland. I bought this game originally at launch on PS4. Started it and gave up. Quickly. Multiple times. This must be my 5th or 6th time trying to complete this game

This time round, I followed a guide to mainline it asap. I also put it on the hardest difficulty, which instead of making it annoying, it made it better

The issues are that there are about 5 character models in the game, about 4 different enemy types, and every map looks exactly the same. No snowy area, sand area, swamp area....everywhere is just rocky/forest area. You've seen everything you are going to in the epilogue area

I had audiobooks, music, podcasts and sometimes TV shows on in the background to get me through. If I hadn't have had a handful of trophies already and just wanted to get this out if my backlog then I would never play it. Problem is I have to do the run again for the PS4 at some stage...maybe in 3 or 4 years

After playing Crimes & Punishments, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes was meant to be the next in the series. Its a worse game in almost every respect, almost like it was released 10 years previous?

The graphics seem worse, the voices are off, the sound levels are all over the place, character models have changed randomly but the old mkdels are still in the game but for other characters (!!??) or look worse than before, the UI is worse, the controls have been changed for the worse, the acting was atrocious, the story was stupid and the puzzles were mostly terrible

I played this the same way I did with C&P, with me controlling and having family help me deduce the story/puzzles together. It just didn't work the same way, but having the family time together, drinking, eating junk food, discussing theories, thats what makes me score this game 4.5, I'd score it lower if I were playing this on my own. I'm glad this one is over and done with

Weve already started the Devils Daughter and we have loved the return to individual cases and back to the old controls, but with a massive jump in graphics, it's nice to fully explore London during these cases, it's almost semi-open-world with decent crowd density (London is busy!), lots of different character models and voices. It's just a big step up. Even after just doing 1 of the cases I can safely say the final score will be higher than TToSH. We won't get to finish it for a while though as the majority of the family are going on a long holiday

Apparently I had played this game before, having the very basic trophies from a quick playthrough and then dropped it for something else. I remember nothing at all from this game apart from the Baba Yaga DLC and the trebuchet section at the end of the game

And that's how I'd describe the game. Very unremarkable. Bland. It's fine overall don't get me wrong. It's just... a bit boring. I've now done 87% of the base game, all the DLC I've not touched brings the % down to 54%. I may try some of it....I may not

Party game that I started 4 years ago at a friend's house when I signed into my account on his playstation. Got 1 trophy and we stopped playing

Been waiting for a worth while sale on the game to buy it and quickly plat it so I don't have to hide the 1 trophy. 4 years later....

It's actually not a bad game...if you play it as a party game with friends, with a drink or 2 and a pizza. I played it solo with 2 controllers and couch co-op with audiobooks and podcasts on. Not hard, just a little boring towards the end

7/10 - Base game with various DLC rules

It's not the best Civ, but it's the one I have for consoles (I also have it for Switch but it gets very slow and laggy mid game). Been playing since release, but wanted to try get it "finished" before I potentially buy Civ7 next year

I have now completed the base game, and about half the stuff from various DLC's. I will plug away at the extra stuff, but the base game is now done!

Strange one to score, I loved it so personally its 8/10 but I could see others hating it

"City" builder based in an post-apocalyptic world taken over by the sea? Cities auto generate around outposts, which grow larger if you connect to resource nodes

Depending on who you interact with, trade with, set up special outposts with, starts to change the way your buildings look. It's just aesthetics but different factions have cool looking buildings, and then politics comes in too, factions don't play well with each other

You can hire commanders who can help with resources, give you bigger and better military units, give you warships, become traders

There are slight difficulties, depending on the save slot (?), the faction you choose to start with, and the location you start at

From what I understand it was made mostly by 1 guy, who's very active on steam chatting and taking feedback and updating the game based on feedback

I think you get both PS4/5 versions with a purchase so I'll probably end up doing the PS4 version next year

Terrible game. The story is dreadful, some of the mechanics are some of the worst ive ever had the displeasure of having interacted with, there's about 3 different enemy types, I counted 2 different type of "world", asteroid field or ice asteroid field, voice acting is terrible, music is forgettable, the last boss is possibly the worst boss level I've played, constant bugs, some of the way points and instructions are just plain wrong. The game constantly makes your dualsense rumble...and I mean constantly. My hands are still aching from it now. I should have turned it off. It drained my battery and I suspect have probably worn down my controllers durability

Do not play this game, even for free. Waste of space, time & effort
