Ubisoft says more of its games will be getting NFTs, despite the initial backlash (VGC)

Ubisoft has promised that more of its games will feature NFTs in the future, despite the overall negativity its Quartz platform has been getting so far.

Billed by Ubisoft as “the first platform for playable and energy-efficient NFTs in AAA games”, Quartz was originally revealed in December 2021 and was quickly met with overwhelming backlash by players.

Despite this, a statement on the Ubisoft Quartz website tells players that the publisher will continue to add ‘Digits’ – its equivalent of NFTs – to future games.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint was the first game to get Digits, and the statement claims that even though it won’t be getting any more, there will be more games in the future that support them.

“Thank you to all Ghost Recon Breakpoint players who claimed their first Digits,” the statement reads.

“You own a piece of the game and have left your mark in its history. As the last Digit for Ghost Recon Breakpoint was released on 3/17/2022, stay tuned for more updates with features to the platform and future drops coming with other games.”

Numerous game companies have already started selling digital items as NFTs, including Konami and Atari, though this has attracted criticism from some due to the format’s high carbon footprint and what many perceive to be cynical implementation.

Ubisoft was one of the first publishers – and certainly one of the largest – to declare that it would be implementing NFTs in its games, and continues to press ahead with those plans despite widespread criticism.

In January, a Ubisoft executive stated that the company will proceed with its NFT plans, controversially claiming players just “don’t get it”.

Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab VP Nicolas Pouard told Australian financial site Finder: “Well, it was a reaction we were expecting. We know it’s not an easy concept to grasp. But Quartz is really just a first step that should lead to something bigger. Something that will be more easily understood by our players.”

Pouard continued to imply throughout the interview that the player backlash was due to their inability to understand the benefits of NFTs, rather than any legitimate concerns about the scheme.

“I think gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them,” Pouard said. “For now, because of the current situation and context of NFTs, gamers really believe it’s first destroying the planet, and second just a tool for speculation.

“But what we [at Ubisoft] are seeing first is the end game. The end game is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re finished with them or they’re finished playing the game itself.

“So, it’s really, for them. It’s really beneficial. But they don’t get it for now.”

Despite the apparent surge in NFT schemes, a recent GDC survey of over 2700 game developers showed that 70% have no interest in implementing NFTs in their games.

Fan backlash has caused other companies and personalities to U-turn on their decision to enter the NFT space, including Stalker 2 developer GSC Game World and prolific video games voice actor Troy Baker.

It appears that Ubisoft has no intention of backing down from its plans, however.

What if we could make more money from consumers? Here me out... we can get them to grind for items in games with less content and sell that item to make it work in a more prestige title? That way we can half ass ten games and make one good one...

Can anyone link me a short YouTube or article explaining why I should hate NFTs as much as y'all? I'd be happy to be proven ignorant on this issue.

So it goes like this:

Gamer buys weapon skin mtx for $5 = "Thank you for your purchase"

Gamer buys weapon skin NFT for $5 = "OMG! You gamers rule! Just remember, we're doing this more for you than us. You can now put the NFT receipt beside your home's property deed as a mark on history!"

In short answer, it's a form of mtx that is digital token. You buy it to own that token, and sell it if you want to. But if the game is deleted, or closed down, all your bought items is flushed to the ground, since they are basically worthless items.

Its a pyramid scheme made it look like, you are making money. Like those online casino games, which makes you play ads nonstop, in order to earn $10.

Think of it like collecting oil paintings or baseballl cards. Whether someone is doing to to make money or collect and keep forever it doesn't matter.

The key difference is your collection is digital and can be gone if the service shuts down. It also tries to play off the limited availability aspect which is farcical since it's digital. At least collecting 200 year old vases only have so many around.

NFTs are no different than mtx, but they make it tradeable with limited quantities.

The first Ghost Recon NFTs were pages of the same grey assault rifle skin selling for like $10 each. Instead of selling it like a normal mtx skin, they put a cap on the number of these grey NFTs to entice people to buy them because it might say # 6/100 available.

The first time I heard about NFTs was when NBA players were selling one of a kind art work. At least thats what I think they were. So instead of a one of a kind oil painting, it's a one of a kind digital picture. Whatever. But I thought that's what NFTs were at the beginning. One of a kind digital art. Then I realized that's not necessarily true. It can be as many as the creator wants (like the Ghost Recon gun skin NFTs).

But what I don't get is why I should care.

No one is forcing anyone to buy them. I personally like the concept of MTX because I'd rather invest in a game I like/play than buy a new game I don't like.

GAAS developers have a hard time getting money out of me because I'm not attracted to cosmetics. However, I like the fact that developers have the ability to produce MTX that may interest me in the future.

I think Ubisoft did some NFT cosmetics for Breakpoint. I viewed those in the same way I view a womans scarf at a Macy's department store. It doesn't entice me, or bother me. To be honest, I'm waaaaay more bothered by bad or uninspired game design than womens scarfs at department stores.

I just don't understand where this weird energy comes from.

NFT's are literally a free money printer, it's a smart business decision for companies. "Gamers" have demonstrated 100 billion times over they are a spinless group utterly devoid of any convictions, so there's no downside for Ubisoft. No one who would have bought Game-X otherwise is going to cancel their preorder because of some scummy paid skins.

Because its much worse than mtx.
This nft is everywhere. from sports to normal picture. Its cancerous method, that preys on innocent people.
At least with mtx, they are tied to the game.

It's just make it easier to avoid their games then.

Didn't miss a single thing since I quit playing EA decades ago.

Illustrative of my point above, EA is worth over 10x more now than it was a decade ago when you quit playing. The critical mass of GVMERS doesn't give a shit about this stuff, they happily buy it up in droves.

I wonder if they are mandating all games support the same nfts like it should be if they want to sell nfts. That’s got to be a horrible situation for the devs though.

NFT is a PURE WASTE of energy.
Also, Fuck You Ubi, Fuck You from the deep of my ass.
We had a fun time back in AC Unity, but it's over: I won't remember you. You can keep the children. Bye.

The French Konami.
We are no more proud of them, they can die and go pachinko, then do a crossover with Konami for Metal Rayman Survive 2: ASSassin's Grind NFT sucker's edition.

I can't stand Ubi, but why wouldn't they? As moronic as the average consumer has shown themselves to be repeatedly, any company is going to milk the herd for as much as possible. For better or worse (I would argue worse), it's the nature of business.

How is digital product that has no value, and the only resale value it has, is to find other stupid people like, who are willing to buy it from you.

They are sink of money, and not worth it.

Can NFTs ever be gameplay oriented or are they tied to being cosmetic for some innate reason?
They can. Metaverse is part of that. There was a metaverse like game, which allowed you to buy ingame properties, and sell them for money. This basically stems from that. Now its incorporated in blockchain, which makes the process faster.

Here is what you can buy as nft.

They aren’t much different and are awful for the environment. Why would you want them? A game just shut down and it’s nfts are now worthless. There is a limit to amount of stuff that will carry over from one game to another and no game last forever, be sure of that

I know the inside structural story of why they're completely disconnected from reality, it's not just Ubisoft fault but also a larger cultural problem. But mostly their fault.

Seriously, as I said in another thread, boycott everything they say or do, I mean not that it'll take efforts...

Why are digital MTX "awful for the environment"?

Maybe if very few people “get it”, you’ve done a bad job of explaining it.

This is such arrogant and tone deaf messaging on so many levels.

Too bad I don't give a shit as well.
EA could simply mass buy out everything and I still don't care.
A simple piece of advice to fellow smart Gafers who think I'm doing the " boycott": I don't give a single shit. I stop buying not because I want to bankrupt them, I simply don't want anything to do with disgusting and scum companies. If you people are happy with them, then let them be happy. Not my business to judge how people spend their money and I ain't here to prove anything.

What's the difference between that and buying digital assets (mtx) that you can't resell?

NFTs aren't even something to be mad about but the price and availability might be. They are just asset ownership through a digital contract and the ability to transfer to others through a transaction. They can be gameplay oriented like trading cards can be gameplay oriented i guess but I'm not sure why people are mad that a publisher might limit sales and doesn't just make millions of copies to sell like they do mtxs today.
