CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela's Supreme Court has ruled that it can take over responsibilities assigned to Congress. Opponents of President Nicolas Maduro are saying it's part of an attempt to install a dictatorship in the South American nation.

In Wednesday night's decision, the magistrates say that as long as the opposition-controlled Congress remains in contempt of past court rulings, they can exercise congressional duties themselves.

The court has consistently sided with Maduro's government against Congress in ruling after ruling.'

Earlier this week, the high court also moved to place limits on lawmakers' immunity from prosecution.

Maduro has ruled over a devastating depression and obscene inflation and he decides now is the right time to seize more power even though everyone hates him.

The situation in Venezuela has been horrible for the last few years, but it's going to get much worse very soon.

I saw some violent communists on Twitter who were arguing that Maduro should now begin murdering all of his conservative political opponents.

It's like... guys, Maduro could fuck up a ham sandwich. Even if you support violent dictatorship, Maduro would fuck up all of your goals and ideas!

Are there any voices in the military showing discontent at all? I know Chavez was from the military so they probably have been very complacent with the political situation before. But have their position waved in any way since Maduro took power?

The situation in Venezuela is terrible. I seriously believe the only way Maduro will leave the presidency is in a body bag. He's a fucking dictator. And an awful one at that (not that there are good ones, mind you, but he's way more incompetent than your average tyrant).

As far as I know, the military is in Maduro's pocket. They aren't going to do anything.

It's truly pathetic here in Chile, to see the Communist and a good portion of the Socialist party defending Maduro about literally, everything. Always, the blame is on the dirty capitalist pigs.

Chavez was fairly elected but the Venezuelan government has gone through some extreme lengths to keep Maduro in power. He's as legitimate as Putin in Russia.

Venezuela is not going to collapse, IT IS collapsing. I hope something goods comes out at the end of this circus.

However, from what I've been told, they'd almost need a complete productive reeducation program after the dictatorship is over as most people are definitely not accustomed to the normal productive rules (schedules, duties, free market, non-asistencialism etc).

I wonder what can even be done. Maduro and everyone responsible could be out of Power tomorrow and replaced by well meaning and competent people, but I don't see Venezuela getting any better for a decade if that impossible hypothetical scenario were to happen. It would take too much time just to get things stabilized. Things are pretty fucked there.

Or is it like Turkey (technically according to the rule of law but essentially creating a dictatorship)?

This is NOT according to the constitution: There always has to be a separation of powers (Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary) and you can't have one overriding any other.

The Supreme Court (TSJ) it's shielding itself (and Maduro) behind some twitsted "interpretation of the law" in wich grants itself the power to "take" the Legislature's atributions, while also giving free reign to Executive. This is not legal in any way.

I was watching on Caracol today some interviews with the president of congress and some congress people, the military stopping them from even entering the chamber, and are being hostile with them.

One of the congressmen was with a ripper shirt and said it was a soldier that did it.

Hmm pretty sure Paraguay is trying to change the constitution to allow for re-election and there's a lot of tension at the moment. Evo Morales of Bolivia also tried it recently but I don't think it passed.

A guy like Maduro would be already hanged by his feet like Mussolini if only Chavez didn't had the hindsight of indoctrinating the military too. Frankly I don't see what options are left for venezuelans: try to storm the palace and hope the military doesn't shoot them?

This is depressing. Maduro is still very bad news and I wish all the best luck to the people of Venezuela, but I am worried that certain individuals and political parties elsewhere may be using (or rather, almost certainly will use) this ongoing tragedy to justify all sorts of shit in other countries for the sake of "preventing another Venezuela" or any other similar excuse.

Oh, it's not just the military, Chavez spent many years arming groups of his followers basically preparing them for this sot of thing (and others)

Yep, our President Kuczynski released a statement regarding the current state of affairs in Venezuela and the removal of the ambassador. Needless to say, Maduro's staff didn't like it.

Brazil or it's other bigger mainland neighbors? unlikely

The old dutch caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao are attractive targets, and it's extremely unlikely the netherlands will be capable of defending them.

By extension Suriname would also be an undefended target.

It would be interesting to see if they really would be prepared to pull an Argentina over it, if it's french guyana they they would automatically declare war no the EU considering it's status as a fully integrated province of france.

I'm not particularly familiar with Venezuelan politics or Maduro so I have to ask, is he really stupid/crazy enough to attack a NATO country?
