[Verge] Leak: Lenovo’s larger Legion handheld adds OLED and keeps the detachable mouse

Earlier today, Evan Blass revealed an unannounced Lenovo Legion Go S handheld gaming PC with an extremely intriguing twist: a Steam button that suggests it could be the first third-party SteamOS handheld, and thus the first true competitor to the Steam Deck.

But that handheld gaming PC apparently won’t be alone: Blass just provided The Verge with these images of a new, larger Lenovo Legion Go as well.

As you can see, this Legion Go plans to keep the detachable Joy-Con like gamepads and kickstand that were the single most distinctive features of the original — and they’ll keep the “FPS mode” where you can plop one of those controllers on a disc-shaped skate and use it like a vertical mouse.

But one model may also swap out the Legion Go’s 8.8-inch IPS LCD screen for one with an OLED panel at the same size, according to the original filenames of these images. That should mean improved colors and deeper blacks, and potentially improved response times.
We don’t have any specs or marketing claims yet, though, like the all-important battery life size. Nor have we gotten a glimpse of the ports on this system. There is an AMD Z2 Extreme chip coming that could likely be the core of this handheld, but we don’t yet know.

In my review of the original Legion Go, I was mixed on the detachable controllers with their sharp-ish edges and loads of extra mouse buttons that made them awkward to hold. These one seem to be far more smoothly sculpted, though, with revised mouse buttons on the right detachable pad, and a cover you can place over the mounting rail so the copper charging pins don’t poke your palm.

The images we’ve seen do not feature a Steam button, so it’s quite likely Lenovo is still hedging its bets with Windows in addition to SteamOS.

But we are much more confident in our prediction that the smaller Lenovo Legion Go S will be a SteamOS handheld. Blass showed me filenames that suggest the S will be “powered by” Steam, mirroring Valve’s new branding guidelines for “Powered by SteamOS” devices.

Valve defines “Powered by SteamOS” as “hardware running the SteamOS operating system, implemented in close collaboration with Valve.”
We’ve reached out to Valve and Lenovo to hopefully learn more.

Imagine if they still don’t have VRR which is a must for handheld with this power….. otherwise the whole system is useless .. again ..

Really liked the original look and feel but it had issues. Really hopi g they addressed all that and we get a more solid and performance variant this time!

It was always a bit too large for me. 8” OLED with Z2 chip, 32GB RAM, VRR and non detachable controllers would have been a great sweet spot.

I like the screensize but they could really just stop with the detachable controls. The button placement was horrible because it was trying to do far too much. The joycons didn't seem to ever attach firmly. Always felt like I was going to break something eventually.

Simpler is better.

Yep, more things to break and less ergonomic controls. And grips make that decide even more massive.

Prices on these are going to be interesting.

Mini PCs with “AI” 370 are going for like a cool $999. That is vs around $700 for 7000 series on release and about $800 for 8000 series chipset.

2025 will be a very exciting year for PC handhelds (on top of other exciting hardware).
Awesome stuff.
Steam OS is a game changer for these devices.
As I mentioned before I think price will be an unpleasant surprise. The upcoming Chinese handhelds with the new chipset are like $1,400+ with 32GB.

Yeah, these devices will cost a lot for sure. But very tempting indeed. The Steam Deck is getting a bit long in the tooth in a few games, so the idea of getting a heavy speced "sucessor" in 2025 is very tempting.

The issue at the end is that we are looking at like 40% - 50% more performance vs Deck at around 15w - 20w at best.

And the cost will be very high. Hopefully Z2 Extreme will be more reasonable price wise vs the standard chipset.

Yeah, fingers crossed for a decent priced Z2 Extreme, but i'm not expecting any less than 1000 bucks. Anything else will be a decent suprise.
At least since the 2025 PC handhelds all probably will have OLED as well.
I can't imagine a Rog Ally 2 with anything less than OLED when the new Legion devices have it.

Then again, a Rog Ally 2 with Steam OS, OLED and hopefully improved specs.. now that would probably be my Steam Deck succesor for sure.

For those prices they better be OLED, lol, and also got to have VRR. It does help a lot.
