The Type-Moon visual novel Witch on the Holy Night has somewhat recently achieved a significant feat on PC, amassing over 2,000 Steam user reviews. As of the time of this writing, 2,105 Steam user reviews have been submitted, with 98% of them being positive.

Witch on the Holy Night tells the story of a trio who live together in an old Western mansion on the outskirts of a Japanese town. Rumors say that a witch lives in the place, and they might not be so far-fetched. After all, Aoko Aozaki studies her sorcery in the area under the tutelage of Alice Kuonji. During the Showa Era (the 1980s), a young man called Soujuurou Shizuki meets the two of them. He comes from a rural area and has slowly been adjusting to the new reality of high school in the city. Eventually, he encounters these two mages in the most unconventional of circumstances, initiating a curious set of bonds.

Witch on the Holy Night is also available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Yeah, really an excellent VN and I find Type-Moon's best work. It greatly helps that this doesn't have roots in hentai territory. No fucking harem, no dumb love relationship... so the main character is actually very good. Not that he was bad in Tsukihime, but he was too obsessed with the girl. And Shiro in Fate is so bland an cringe, impossible to love him.

If you like this VN, you should definitely watch all seven Kara no Kyoukai movies if you haven't. Absolutely masterpieces.

Yeah, this is exactly why it's so good. No dumb anime clicles, no brain-damaged male protagonist, great dialogue, some truly tense moments. Also absolutely insane art and great effects/animation which I did not expect in a visual novel. Don't get me wrong, I like many of those anime tropes, but having them shoved in on everything isn't always the answer.

If you like this VN, you should definitely watch all seven Kara no Kyoukai movies if you haven't. Absolutely masterpieces.

Tsukihime (the recent remaster) is definitely not as good. Same production value, but weaker story and bad pacing. Overstays its welcome, and this has its roots as a hentai VN, so there is a strong love component that often felt forced. VN definitely has some great moments, but I wished it was shorter. It would have helped a lot.

Tsukihime also has routes and choices, and the implementation was a bit lacking and you have to go through the same scenes a lot to eventually unlock everything. Felt like a chore. They should have made this much simpler, like choose route 1, 2 or 3 at the beginning and be done with it. Choices aren't great, many lead to deaths and you have to rewind. Not super fun. Only a handful are really interesting.
