This has prompted several retailers to drop the price to $249, including Gamestop who removed their $299 listing pretty fast after.

In the UK, Microsoft has slashed prices £25.00 off £249.99 for the Series S to £224.99,

Other UK retailers are also doing discounts gradually reversing their $299.

I suspect, that Microsoft saw the data and want to prevent a post holiday 2014 Xbox One fiasco by raising the price up after two months in a row of BF level sales or better, and since we are now in the third month it would be close to impossible for Microsoft to expect sales goals to be met at $299.

I think it's likely they will stop being stubborn and keep the Series S officially at $249 MSRP and that equal for other countries, which are also putting S on sale (including Japan although slowly). There's still a chance at the end of the month MS decides to go with $299 but that would be an incredibly risky and nonsensical business move.

At this point I believe that consumers are so used to $249 at minimum (or less) that anything higher than that price will be a hard sell. Plus, Microsoft has the Series X for those who want to spend more and want the better spec, they already knew the Series S would be the entry level console so I suspect they saw this coming and will be smart to prevent turning off customers by raising it back to $299. Of course, it's not impossible, they could raise the price universally back to $299, that would be a Don move though.

Microsoft has issued an official price cut for the Xbox Series S, that slashes the already generous price by £50, but it won’t last long.

This year’s Black Friday didn’t have much in the way of video game bargains, given the lack of big name games and the fact that no-one’s going to discount the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 while they’re still low on stock.

The Xbox Series S, though, has been relatively easy to get hold of all year and so it saw discounts as low as £189.99, down from the usual price of £249.99. You wouldn’t usually expect to see a repeat of that until next November and yet Microsoft has slashed £50 off the price until Christmas.



The new price of £199.99 is not just on the Microsoft website but everywhere, with the likes of GAME and Amazon.co.uk both advertising the console for a penny under £200.

Microsoft has made the decision to reduce the console by £50 / $60 from now until Saturday, December 24th.

The Xbox Series S console is one of the best deals in gaming, with its retail price of £250 being a really accessible point for the current generation of games. During Black Friday 2022 we saw the price of the console drop down to £190 which was amazing, and now it's dropped back down to under £200 again just before Christmas.

Microsoft starting today has officially discounted the Xbox Series S at the MS store, and guidance to other retailers, to sell the consoles on sale at $239.99|£199.99|€229.00 for the next 12 days until end of Christmas Eve.

Microsoft likely saw an opportunity here. People brought their X's, PS5's and even Switches in BF and CM and so there's a slow down for December, so they likely believe that there's a vacuum up for grabs. Not to mention for best selling consoles of 2022 in the US and UK the three gaming systems are very close, in the UK so much so there's less than 40,000 units separating all 3 iirc according to Ding.

The one issue I see with this is that if this works out and we see an influx of interest in the Series S at this price point for December that wasn't there earlier than most likely this strategy will force them to keep these prices permanently in January. We have seen this strategy before with the Xbox One where they raised the price back up end of December 2014 and early January and Microsoft had to lower the price again to have stable sales momentum. However, this time it won't be so bad because the Series S was intended to be a cheaper entry level console and not the main console, while the main console is still selling at regular price of $499 supply constrained.

But I must say Microsoft has given people one hell of a deal for Series S, first in November, and now for the second half of December, pre-Christmas.

The holiday console is just the S but the box has a pictures of presents on it in the background image of the box. That was done last month to push for holiday sales and collabs but it seems they are still selling those boxes.

I think you're mistaking them playing catch still. Series generation are the fasting selling Xbox ever.

PS4 to Xbox One was something like 2.25:1 ratio.

Xbox Series S/X is somewhere closer to 1.4:1 or 1.3:1 ratio.

In months from this year, we've seen 1:1 and ups/down of who sold more in what region etc.

Sales like this are to close that gap and accelerate. Xbox will be tracking metrics of falling behind vs profit for the long game.

As for Nintendo I don't have a clue on those comparisons but I think it's more like 1.8:1 previous gen and 1.5:1 current gen e.g. Nintendo vs Xbox.

I doubt that's the case. The console market has always been a race to the bottom in order to sell more software. If they can sell 30m consoles at $300 but 60m at $200 then they will want the price to be $200.

It's the same reason you can buy a printer for 50 bucks. The profit comes from selling ink cartridges.

Around this point in time, PS4 was also outselling Xbox One by a ratio of 1:4.

Even by April 2015, Xbox One was outselling PS4 in NPD. In 2022, PS4 handsomely outsold Xbox One even in the US, which is the strongest market for Xbox, and this is despite Series S and its discounted price. It's effectively a $250 console vs. a $499 console, and PS5 is still outselling Xbox in its strongest market.

Phil's full of shit and front loading unamoratized expenses like Nintendo and Hollywood accountants do. There is no chance whatsoever the BoM (that is the material and assembly cost) is anywhere near $400-$500 for a Series S, what an absolutely comical exaggeration. The SoC is less than 200mm^2 on a now aging mainstream node with 8GB of middling RAM, 2GB of trash tier RAM, no disk drive, and a bargain bin 512GB nvme. Even a $200 BoM would be pushing it, but with packaging and shipping I could see $239 being their break even.
