So here's a podcast about the Yakuza series. A lot of it is about Zero, but it's spoiler-free.

A follow-up to that is quite the opposite and open with spoilers. It's also pretty much only about Zero.
http://www.gamerevolution.com/features/yakuza-0-is-the-best-yakuza-game-ever-podcast-2
0:00:16 - Disclaimers and minor spoiler warning
0:02:27 - Comparing and contrasting: Kiryu's story
0:07:45 - Comparing and contrasting: Majima's story
0:14:05 - Pacing the story across the game
0:18:05 - "Save the Cat" and cliffhangers
0:20:21 - MAJOR SPOILER WARNING, last chance to get out
0:20:26 - The character of
Makoto
0:22:35 - Escort Mission war stories
0:26:45 - Majima's final chapters
0:33:14 - Kiryu's final chapters

Probably only good for the few people who've finished Zero, but worth pointing out, since Western media coverage of Yakuza (let alone import-only Yakuza) is slim pickings.

Have I shared the greatest piece of journalism about Yakuza ever written?
Real Yakuza review Yakuza 3.

So the Zero demo made me finally get into this series (bought 3 back when I got my PS3 in 2012 but never actually played it) and in the last month I've plowed through 1-3, mostly ignoring the minigames/hostess stuff/etc because I figured they'd be the most polished in 4. Am I right about that assumption?

Yes, but it's a LOT of fun in 2. I love getting to design a business from the ground up. I don't recall 4's being that involved with changing the carpet, plants, wallpaper, etc.

Ok I started playing Yakuza 4 last week and just finished it last night.

It was my third Yakuza game (I skipped 2) and I enjoyed it just like the other 2.

Having 4 different protagonists had both positive and negative impact on the game personally.
Akiyama was good character but I wasn't really surprised since I have heard countless time how awesome he was. I was surprised at how much I like Tanimura's part (both story and gameplay). Saejima was probably my least favorite out of the 4. But none of them are even close to the legendary Kiryu Kazama.

The graphics and some of gameplay elements felt dated/slow and it was more evident since I played the PS4 version of Yakuza Zero demo before playing Yakuza 4. But overall I really enjoyed the experience and I can't wait to play the English version of Yakuza 5 (and hopefully they localize Yakuza Zero as well)

Shamefully I must admit I have owned Yakuza 1 and 2 for a while, but I have never finished them, to rectify I am doing a run through Yakuza 1 now.

After I have beaten the first and second games, I will go back to Yakuza Zero.

If you can, I would recommend playing 1 and 4, since you are going back to Zero.

4 especially explains Majima's past and Zero is actually what happens after what has been explained on 4.

Decided to take a photo of my Yakuza games all together.

The box for 2 is different because it's a promo version of the game sent out to retailers before general release, I scored this on ebay.

From the little I've heard, they're not super great...but can't confirm. Though last I heard from this, they may just be talking about their previous efforts with the poll.

I'd imagine unless Sony (or perhaps SEGA themselves) made the decision to change, they'd be sticking with Pole to Win/Inbound Games.

Apparently, Language Automation INC. is locazing Yakuza 5. Anyone know what games they have localized in the past? Can't find anything on their website.

Contacted them a few days ago and got a reply of them saying "I believe it is being translated, but we're not doing it. Not sure who is, though."
Not gonna lie, Language Automation INC is mixed anyway from what I've seen.

I've yet to play Zero but I hardly know any Japanese at all. Inshin is pretty good however.

Actually, it turns out that Inbound Games is handling the translation (They handled Y2 and assisted Pole to Win with every localized Yakuza game afterwards), so it will be consistent.

frustrated bc i left my copy of Y1 at my gf's house last year and now she can't find it. almost done with Y4 and was gonna play that one next... TT~TT

speaking of which, where the hell is our y5 release date

I think we will get it soon. I was contacted a week or two ago about Sony using my Twitter handle in their upcoming interview video (I'm guessing they asked one of my questions to the developers.) I suspect we might get a date with that video, and they're putting it together now. Perhaps we will see it around E3 time?

I hope it's one of those announcements where the speaker says "It's available to download RIGHT NOW" when explaining their list of great exclusive titles. Let them dream!

I'm assuming it's been in the works for a while, considering how large the script is. Though there's also the QA process...

It'd be nice if they made it possible to play PS3 PSN games on the PS4 to maximize the sales.

If you're struggling with the Japanese, try using the Google Translate app on your phone. It let's you take a photo of the screen (and text), then gives you a VERY rough translation.

It's not ideal, but I used it on a couple of the training objectives to work out what I had to do. One of them involved getting hit and countering right at the last second. Couldn't work it out for the life of me, but the translate app helped.

I can vouch for the app. I've used it quite a bit so far in my Zero playthrough and while the translations aren't spot on (you need to interpret some of the translations) its still solid and makes a lot of sense most of the time. Excellent for translating Kiryu's/Majima's moves list.

Which reminds me, I really need to get back to playing Zero. I stopped to let the wiki's/KHH Subs create his own guide so that I had plenty of info to do the side stuff in the game etc.

This is a pretty cool Yakuza story. My best friend messaged me Friday and said he had started Yakuza 4 after getting it for free on Plus. Before playing this, I'm pretty sure he thought I was full of crap when I said this series was any good. After playing it, he said he's very interested in the series and is ready for 5 to hit. He likes it so much, he was exhausted for work Sunday because he stayed up too late playing. He's beat maybe 10 games total in his life. This is one that this week, he'll add into that list.

See, Sega. People do like this series in the west. Just so many people haven't tried it. Give it some marketing here. Just a bit.

I really want Yakuza Zero. :(

I don't think there will ever be as good of an opportunity to secure Yakuza Zero than by making sure Y5 sells above expectations. If Y5 bombs - even if it's SEGA's fault by not marketing it - it's just a reason to not localize YZ. Given SEGA of America's current predicament, don't expect any kind of significant marketing unless it's on Sony's behalf. This might have to be a word-of-mouth deal, which sucks and I'm sure no one wants to do it, but if it means we get YZ I'm in.

I imagine Sony will have a hand in marketing this time considering the announcement said they were partnering up. Hopefully, they can do enough for it to be successful.

I wonder if the Y4 announcer can be tied into it.

"So it's late night in Kamurocho, and living at an orphanage really sucks.
Naturally, it's the ideal time to take on the music industry.
Hit up the clubs, drive cabs, beat the hell out of anyone in your way.
This chick's so badass she doesn't even need backup dancers.
Yakuza 5. Become a shining star... in a world of total darkness."

Can't play The Witcher 3 for like a week because I have to RMA a bad Motherboard, so I finally decided to finish Yakuza 4. Restarted it tonight because I knew there was no way I'd remember enough to pick my old save back up. I honestly can't believe how much I forgot. The whole Yakuza turf war at the beginning that's the impetus for the main story here I completely forgot. Only thing I remembered was the girl who comes in for the loan.

Also, as much shit as the multiple protagonist thing gets, man I love Shun. As cool as Kazuma is, his story is sort of been worn to its natural conclusion. I'm not sure there's much more they can do with his character. Shun, on the other hand, has a really interesting and different perspective into Kamurocho. He's sort of an outsider to the crime aspect, so it's really interesting to see things from his eyes. He's also a total badass and his loan business provides outlets for a ton of cool stories. I could play a whole game starring him.

Awesome. Never realized the games weren't done by Sega internal. They've done a fantastic job. Sure, there are some minor things I'd change just from a wording perspective (and knowing a small bit of Japanese), but every localization has its quirks.

Right now I am on chapter 10 in Ishin so it would be prefect if Yakuza 5 comes out in the next few weeks. Glad I at least started Yakuza 5 as most of the characters reappear in Ishin.

Ishin has a shorter script than Yakuza 5 but don't know if that will make a difference.

I'm really starting to think the lack of announced released date is either one (or a combination) of three things:

1) The volume of text that needs to translated/programmed/QAed makes it hard to estimate
2) Sony or SEGA's release time table
3) Licensed stuff is being edited/replaced and that takes time.

on a related note, not sure if anyone on GAF has made a thread on this, but SEGA's localization producer Sam Mullen held a presentation at Momocon last weekend regarding Japanese game localization, which is some pretty interesting (and detailed) stuff regarding the entire process:
