Youtube Premium raising subscription $5/month for family plan

Just got an email that my Youtube Premium subscription will be going up $5/month starting next month, this is for the family plan. I know a lot of you will be asking why I pay for Youtube when there's apps that will skip the ads for free, I have four kids and a wife that all use it (two share) and I really don't care to make sure each of their devices plus the devices on all the tvs have something to block the ads. I use it enough that I didn't mind the $18/month, but damn that's quite a jump.

Here's the email;
We will be updating your YouTube Premium family plan price starting November 21, 2022

Hi Shonn,

We created YouTube Premium to provide an uninterrupted YouTube experience, so you can get closer to the videos, creators, and music artists that you love. To continue delivering great service and features, we will be increasing your Premium family plan price from $17.99/month to $22.99/month.

This change will take place on your next billing cycle starting on or after November 21, 2022. To check the status of your account and billing information, go to your Settings > Purchases and Memberships page. All members have the flexibility to pause or cancel anytime here.

With your family plan, you and up to 5 members of your household can continue to enjoy benefits like ad-free YouTube with background and offline play, and uninterrupted access to over 100 million songs with the YouTube Music app. Members also get to try experimental new features and exclusive livestream afterparties with music artists. This update will allow us to develop even more Premium features and continue to support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.

You can find more information on the latest updates in the YouTube Help Center.

Thanks for being a YouTube Premium member.

Sincerely,
The YouTube Premium team

I was about to get upset then I remembered I'm already paying $23 per month. I swapped Netflix for YouTube premium since I watch YouTube more.

I watch YouTube across so many devices that it's worth it for me. Plus being able to share with 6 people. But everyone is different and ymmv. If the value isn't there then move on.

I heard they were considering locking 4K video behind the paywall. I think if they do that the subscriber count could drop.

How long have you been paying $23? I've had Premium for years, maybe it was delayed to long time subscribers?

Dammit. I’m using premium out of the same reasons, OP. Haven’t seen Ads in ages and also like the PiP feature on iPhone. But 22 is way too much. I think I’ll have to cancel Netflix.

For 3 months now. I upgraded from an individual to a family plan and it was already that much. They probably just delayed it for current subscribers.

I don’t think I know a single person who has YouTube Premium. I remember reading a tweet of Elon Musk’s a little bit ago where he talked about the adverts he gets. So if even the richest man in the world doesn’t pay for premium then it seems they do a really shitty job of getting people to sign up.

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

I know one, I really don't know why they pay for it. They have several other subscriptions too. It's their money to throw away I guess...

I got a little kid who loves her YouTube shows. After getting some adult content as ads, even with the filter on, I decided to take the deal. YouTube Music is also quite nice, as it has every song available on YT

Exactly, YouTube Music is great. No music streaming service comes close. My wife uses it every day on her commute.

I can totally understand getting it. Makes total sense and the music service does sound good.I just think it’s kinda funny how YouTube is this site that we pretty much all use every day. Yet even with all the digital subscriptions people have these days very few seem to even consider getting YouTube premium. That really sucks your kid was being shown adult content through the ads though.

I use Brave as my YouTube app because it allows screen off playing, but I'm using PiP as I write this just to test it. It also blocks ads natively. I know that doesn't help you much in your situation, but it may be useful to some who are just looking for the browser features for themselves.

If you wanted to stick with Safari for whatever reason (I'm not a fan of the UI but whatever makes you happy), you can install extensions for it that will help. PiP is an extra step, but it can be done.

As for the price, that's ridiculous unless 6 people split the cost evenly. $276 a year for YouTube. What are the other benefits these days? Music is in, right?

i'm not on the family plan but if they try raising prices for the standard sub then i'm out. the ad free youtube is great but youtube music is a bit shit. the shuffle and recommendations suck compared to spotify. my renewal is due next week so been thinking about leaving anyway. i miss spotify but i really can't be fucked with youtube ads. i wish youtube had a sub for just getting rid of ads

Everything sucks compared to Spotify. I'm milking my family's Apple One plan at the moment now, but wow do I miss Spotify's algorithm for recommendations. I might just go back to it. The recommendations always let me find new and amazing music. Apple Music is like ... we heard you like Tchaikovsky ... here is some Lil' Wayne.

yeah i've tried apple music out too. youtube keeps playing the same shit all the time on shuffle/radios and i've hardly had any good recommendations. i've been liking/disliking as many songs as i can but it doesn't seem to be learning. i feel like i'm missing out because spotify introduced me to so many artists. most of the ones i listen to today are ones i found on spotify. fuck it i'm just gonna go back. i'll deal with youtube ads

Fortunately, I am also milking my family's YouTube Premium plan at this particular moment. :messenger_grinning_sweat: I literally don't use YouTube Music, even though it's free, for the exact reasons you mentioned. Some of the "playlists" it makes are random garbage songs from videos I would never listen to outside of YouTube. Most are one-offs, but they live on for eternity in YouTube's dumpster fire recommended lists. It's like a compilation of the worst things imaginable. Spotify really does have their algorithms on lockdown. They recommend some stuff I've seriously enjoyed that I never would have found in a thousand lifetimes. I rarely ever find new bands or playlists I love on Apple Music. And their radio is just ... bad. I don't understand how a company with unlimited funds like Apple can have such a terrible music experience. The only thing they have going for them is sound quality. Everything else is booty.

I don't think even YouTube's engineers know what their algorithms do anymore.

Lol I paid 60p or $0.66 a month for Premium thanks to Argentina's shit dollar value. Got an email they are putting it up, I think I will manage :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It's not that much of a jump, especially if you are a working adult, but each of these makes millions of people think: do I really need this?

I have the following subscriptions now:
Spotify - got 6 months for free, and if Apple launches Classical Apple Music I am probably going back
Disney + - essential
Netflix - nice to have
YouTube Premium - nice to have
OCS - 1 month to watch GoT spin-off

So OCS is getting cut after 1 month, and I am really considering cutting YT Premium, since if my kids watch TV I want them to watch Disney, not YoutTube.

Not enough to cancel, Youtube is used more than any other streaming service by my family. It's the only streaming service I pay for other than live tv (Prime doesn't count as I pay for the free shipping and the streaming is a bonus).

Parody of actual AJUMP23
I have YouTube tv. The fact that yt premium isn’t included in that $65 is beyond me.

I dread the day vanced no longer works. No ads, no stupid self promotion, no sponsor stuff. It's glorious.
i thought vanced did stop working? i'm sure i read something about it recently.

edit: seems it's working for those who have it installed but it's been shut down.

"The popular Vanced YouTube app is being discontinued, after a legal threat from Google. The creators of Vanced have revealed the project will be shut down in the coming days, with download links set to be removed. While the app will continue to work for anyone who currently has it installed on Android, without any future updates it’s likely to stop working at some point soon. The Vanced owners say they’ve had to discontinue the project “due to legal reasons.” "
