Authorities hold press conference in wake of shooting at Texas elementary school

A shooting at a Texas elementary school killed 14 children and one teacher Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott said.
Abbott identified the suspect as Salvador Romas, a Uvalde resident, who is also dead.
"Texans across the state are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime and for the community of Uvalde. Cecilia and I mourn this horrific loss and we urge all Texans to come together to show our unwavering support to all who are suffering," he said in a statement.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers have been instructed to work with local law enforcement.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told Fox News that the shooter – who ran to Robb Elementary School – had become barricaded inside. Uvalde Memorial Hospital confirmed that two people were brought to the hospital deceased.
Fifteen children were taken to the facility via ambulance or bus for treatment, a hospital spokesman told Fox News.
"There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary. Law enforcement is on site," the school posted on Facebook shortly after shots rang out. "Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus."
No information on the suspected shooter or the victim was released. The school is located 80 miles west of San Antonio.

University Health in San Antonio said it received two patients – a child and a 66-year-old woman who is in critical condition. The condition of the child was not released. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been briefed on the shooting.
The agency is also coordinating with local and state authorities. Uvalde Memorial Hospital said Tuesday evening it was having an emergency blood drive on Wednesday, though it was not clear if the event is related to the shooting.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District first reported the school lockdown at 11:43 a.m. local time.

"Please know at this time all campuses are under a Lockdown Status due to gunshots in the area. The students and staff are safe in the buildings," the district had said in a message to parents.
The district asked parents not to pick up their children and that students needed to be accounted for before being released. Parents were notified to pick up their children around 2 p.m.
All district and campus activities, including after-school programs and events have been canceled. Parents are being asked to pick up their children at their regular dismissal times at their school campus. School bus transportation has also been canceled.
Police officers will escort students to the parent vehicles.

Well that's definitely the guy in all the make up in the instagram photos.

This is awful. Anything involving children just seems to hit harder.

I don’t think any logical person would argue against the idea that if tomorrow every gun(legal and illegal) in the US disappeared, there would be far fewer homicides and death. But that obviously is a fantasy hypothetical. I don’t know what you do about a country that has more guns than people. Over 350 million. This isn’t like Australia in 1996 that didn’t have close to the gun count America has now.

Im not an expert on guns or gun laws, so I don’t even really know what the proposed reforms are and if they’d actually make a difference.

We might as well just lock this thread now. It's just going to turn into a political gun debate.
You’re probably right, but I honestly don’t even know what else there is to do in a thread regarding a news story like this. A bunch of strangers on an Internet forum just stopping by to post “RIP. This is awful” seems like a very trite thing to do, albeit kind gestured.

It’s not like this is a memorial page where people drop by and offer condolences. Once this thread was started, there’s only one place it’s going to inevitably go.

This is heart breaking, America has to really take a step back and figure out how to solve this issue because children should not be afraid to go to school .... this is insane.

10 years after we did nothing, we let 5-9 year olds die again. That’s how young the kids are in elementary schools. I had hoped that Sandy hook would’ve made Americans care about the children enough to do something about this, but nope. These kids were likely all born after the Sandy hook shooting. I have a kid going to an elementary school and I’m terrified. Why this has become a left vs right thing is beyond me. I just don’t understand anything anymore.
dont they teach them kids in kindergarten how to stay on toiletseats if something like this happens?

@news : Pretty horrific. RIP to all the people who died. :(

Then it's an issue with mental illness and the material well-being of the people, both which get ignored.
Very good post, and I agree.

I hate the politicization of mass shootings, as it ignores the very blatant mental health part of it. Something people have noticed is that almost invariably, the perpetrator has suffered some sort of mental illness or is of weak mental constitution and falls into a dark rabbit hole.

For example, the Buffalo terrorist was:
(1) a white supremacist
(2) mentally ill

Unfortunately #2 got almost completely ignored.

Absolutely sickening.

Serious question as a non US citizen, but what could change to stop further attacks like this?

Security and protection services has to go up especially for elementary schools and only people that work at the school with identification are permitted through maybe and schools need to be ready to go and ready to blast these psychos' heads off when they come knocking.

I find it interesting that every time one of these shooters have "mental illness" it ends in innocent and unarmed people getting killed.

The Buffalo guy planned that whole thing out, its not mental illness its just evil and more things need to be put in place to not let guns into the wrong hands.

My daughters have two days left till summer break, I'm thinking they can start summer break tomorrow.
RIP little ones, what a senseless tragedy.

"It's not mental illness."

You could not possibly be more WRONG.

Also you're proving my point. By ignoring the obvious mental component, you're not addressing a big contributor to the problem.

Never do we talk about what drives people to do this. Mental illness needs to be the issue discussed
Don't know if that's a solvable issue. Some people are born messed up, some people are in environments that make them become messed up. Don't think we know nearly enough about the brain and human psyche yet to come close to fixing mental illness. At least not the kind that contributes to people growing up to do awful things. We have drugs that treat specific issues that work to varying degrees of success, but even then there are trade offs, and it's not a cure all. I think that's something that will take longer to fix than any gun issue.

Doesn't help that it's expensive in states to get the help needed.

Why so surprised?

America is fine with their kids being killed.

Nothing changed since Sandy Hook… nothing will change due to this incident.

Get your heads out your ass America, you are completely deluded.
Everyone in this thread agrees that this is a horrible tragedy beyond words. United we'll work on something.

But I'll politely ask for a favor -- can we chill with the "fuck America" narrative, at least for a little bit? It's a giant nation of 330+ million people, don't throw everyone in the same category.

At least let's pay our respects to the victims first. AFTER THAT, if you still can't help yourself, you can resume your "fuck America" narrative 🙄

Pissed that they named the dead suspect because it doesn't fit their narrative and what the media was hoping it was.
Naming the suspect glorifies the shooter and encourages copy cats because the shooters become famous in a way.
That’s what some believe anyways

That's sounds awful. You may as well go into lockdown and work and educate at home.

The Americans need to register guns (one per household maybe),
secure them boxes (make the registrant accountable for it),
And crush any guns not registered. Dishing out fines to the householders that have them on their premises.

He didn't say "eff america". He said america needs to get its s*** together and hes right.

This should not be allowed to happen even once. Let alone twice in less than 10 years, for the most developed nation on the planet. Period.

Theres things that can be done that aren't being done because everything gotta be a gd political tactic now instead of just doing the right thing.

I think if your mental illness is to a point where you want to kill people, for most people, no help is going to cure you. At that point you're probably a sociopath, if not a psychopath. Sociopathy and psychopathy are for life. Some people can be locked up for decades, get out and start killing again. In those instances, the only help for those people is keeping them away from society forever. Which you obviously can't do if they haven't harmed anyone yet. But generally speaking, yes, mental health services are not available enough for people, but I think that is an issue that affects the depressed and suicidal the most. Those people it could actually potentially help.

The issue is that the US isn't an outlier in terms of mental health disorders* but is an outlier in terms of mass shootings. Only beaten by Yemen in 2017 for mass shootings per 100,000 people.

*Might be a measurement problem but that's a whole issue with the US health care system.

The US has multiple factors causing the number of mass shootings but for some weird reasons, you decide not to go for the biggest one first.

"Get your head out your asses."

Just because you say "period" doesn't make your statement definitive. We're all reacting to this, but the reality is that you can't prevent crime. Someone in Wisconsin killed 6 people driving a van during a Christmas parade.

So, I maintain... I'll process this tragedy by paying respects to the victims first. Everyone is in a reactionary state at the moment, which is not an ideal configuration to talk about what to do about it in an agreeable, understood, civilized way.

Indeed. More than half of American people want stricter gun control.

Hmm I don't think it's that simple, because depression can and will lower your ability, to care about others to the point when shooting them could be possibility. Like a hard depression I mean. Mental state can alter who you are.

Well you can process it the way thats best for you. I'm gonna be staring at the GLARING problem and pointing it out specifically, because it is specific, and it is glaring.

The families will have many consoling them in the coming days and weeks but that won't bring their children and their kid siblings back. Thats forever.

Well, that's just fucking depressing. I don't even know what to say.
RIP to those poor children and the teacher. I cannot even fathom what their families are suffering right now.

He's somehow gaining followers since that video. Some of the comments on that post are so despicable.
I really despise what social media has done to people.

Myself included. Yet you've got people like R reksveks speaking for me and saying I'm "ignoring the biggest issue."

Like... Do we not know how things work at all? That you can pay attention to multiple issues at once? Since practically the majority of the thread is talking about gun control, I and a couple of others are highlighting another issue, one that is a contributor but nowhere near talked about as much as it should.

Most elementary schools already have this kind of setup. No one but staff is allowed in building. All doors are locked. Armed security on premises.

You can only arm/lockdown a school enough before it’s not a school anymore.
What I envision from your post is more of a military camp.

We need national healthcare (including mental health) and stricter gun regulations.
I shouldn’t have to maintain more records and paperwork for my car than I do guns and ammunition.

No, idiocy hurts. Yours, most recently and specifically. Preach about the gun problem in a country you don't even fucking live in until you're blue in the face, but if you start a sentence with "I don't care if my kids die," then you can go fuck yourself.
What have American parents done since Sandy Hook to prevent another Sandy Hook?

Well thank you for your permission on letting me know how I can process it 🙄

Also please enlighten us with your quick, foolproof, practical, and expert opinion on how to deal with this "glaring" issue. I'll be waiting...

Mental illness is a strawman to do nothing. Oh well, we don't know how or what to do to stop this mental illness stuff, so buckle up for more. They don't even try to address the illness part cause there is nothing to address.

Lol I wasn't giving you permission. I was telling you that I'M not gonna be approaching this the same way you are.

You dont need to he an expert, nor does the solution need to be foolproof to see the core tenet of the issue and why this doesn't happen nearly as frequently in any other developed nation.

So if it's your preference to avoid touching on that topic, by all means. I won't be doing the same though. Paying respects to the families won't bring their dead child back. But there's NO question in my mind this country has the power to stop something like this from happening as frequently as it does. No question.

US is fucked for a ton of reasons, which no other country has. I dont think even third world African countries with poor people, warlords and rebels have this many random shooting sprees at people in schools or grocery stores.

But you'll NEVER get gun violence down in the US for many reasons:

- Too many guns to start with in people's hands (most guns and highest per capita)
- Gun users in general seem to love owning one (NRA supporter or crime weary people needing a gun). I dont see too many gun users giving back guns. As crazy as it seems when violence goes up, people BUY MORE guns instead of letting it go
- A shit ton of those ultra patriotic/political "well, the constitution from hundred of years ago says people can bear arms, so I'm doing it"
- An overall culture of high crime rates (compared to other rich countries)
- A shit load of mentally whacked people who go on killing sprees (volatile culture). Can come from anything from discrimination, rich guy/poor guy issues, revenge, doing something to be famous, those camo miltia dudes who live in forest thinking the US gov is going to take over their houses and cars etc....

It makes no difference really. Whether it's trying to reduce gun availability, usage or improving mental stability. None of these are easy fixes.

I mean, the US has no bigger issue with mental illness than us here in the UK, but we have no mass shootings at all. Almost like there’s one big difference between the two countries.

Two things can be true. Gun reform is important and crazy people shouldn't have them and that person could be mentally ill. He was most likely a sociopath, which is a mental illness. Being mentally ill doesn't just mean someone who hears voices. A wide range of things account for mental illness. A mentally well person doesn't plot to kill innocent people. Evil is a byproduct of mental illness. Whether it's a mass shooting or killing people one by one over a period of time like a serial killer does, mental illness is a major factor in people who desire to kill massive amounts of people.

What have American parents done since Sandy Hook to prevent another Sandy Hook?

I don't speak for or represent the entirety of my country, which is (one of) the reason(s) painting in broad strokes more often than not looks foolish on the person doing it, but I'll say:

-parents educating their children better, both in stranger danger and in life/death/consequences and respect for a weapon.

-Better planned and more routine/rehearsed lockdown/escape drills.

-More strict policies about letting adults that the school doesn't employee into the premises.

-hiring of more school police officers.

-installation of metal detectors becoming far more of a norm in school settings.

It's appalling, and upsetting and senseless, but it's big news specifically because it doesn't happen that often. The fact that you can name the occasions off the top of your head despite apparently not being a local goes to show.

Second ammendment is a sticky subject, and I agree with you that something needs to be revised and managed better because this is unacceptable, but standing on the sidelines painting the entire population like we all have assault rifles with special nicknames and shoot each other up over getting cut in line at McDonald's is stereotypical absurdity, and a good portion of the population feels the same way as the enlightened Brits/Aussies/Asians/whatevers about it.
