Buying a laptop help

Hi,

My girlfriend is on the market for a new laptop and she can't decide between two computers. Above all, she's worried about not knowing much about AMD CPUs (how reliable, how they compare with Intel). She won't use the PC for gaming and the most she'll ask of the machine will be to use some statistics' softwares and watch movies.

The first one is 220 euros cheaper. Essentially, the difference is the storage and the CPU, but I don't understand enough to properly advise her.

I would much appreciate the help.

Thank you!

Personally I would look for something with more ram, and a larger hard drive. Might be able to find a better price on a model without a ssd.

3700U in the first offering is a decent CPU, on part with latest Intel's perf wise, much faster on GPU side of things.
But note that laptops are much more than raw spec, build quality, and even screen quality are often invisible when you compare them on paper.

I'd suggest looking into this direction, HP has phenomenal x360 Envy series, (13" is normally more expensive as it is also more portable/lighter)

Excellent screen, tablet mode (my daughter is using it that way a lot) stylus support.

3xxx series CPUs are a bit better power consumption wise than 2xxx series.
Note that in ultra-portable format, 3700u, while faster, is not necessarily showing better results than 3500u.

Lenovo has very solid T495/T595 (do not mistake with E series) but they are much more expensive and they don't have touch screen.

hard to say specific model without knowing budget but here are some things to keep in mind when buying a laptop.

1) SSD is a must. Avoid models with only HDD.
2) IPS panel, preferably with thin bezels. The screen is the thing you look at most so you shouldn't torture yourself with a bad display. I suggest looking at the model in person to see how good or bad the screen is.
3) Battery life and weight if you are always on the go.
4) You don't need a discrete video card if you don't plan to play games.

Are AMD CPUs more prone to higher battery consumption? (since it's a laptop)
They actually use a lot less power then their intel counterparts due to using a much efficient node (14nm vs 7nm).
That's true in the desktop market, but I'll be honest, I don't know if this is the case with laptop parts.

what is your budget OP?
While the HP is good if you don’t need the extra GPU power of the APU I would go with Intel.

Not really, one reason is that wattage varies between APU’s from one manufacturer to the other, most are set 15W from the factory but run optimally at 25W .
Plus AMD APU’s need dual-channel RAM to shine over Intel and most laptops only come with single channel RAM with no upgrade options. ( One thing to look into for AMD APU laptops is to see if it has 2 slots for RAM to configure to dual channel ).

No. 2xxx series is 14nm, 3xxx series is 12nm.

3xxxu series are on par with INtel's expensive ultrabook chips.
2xxxu series are notabl behind but still decent chips.
Both beat Intel's non-ultrabook oriented CPUs

Is the statistics software web based or do they need to run on windows?
If it's the former, get a Chromebook. I recommend the ASUS 434 8GB
If she needs an windows laptop, Lenovo's Yoga 730 is a solid choice

There's actually a Yoga 730 on sale on the site that OP posted:

Not sure how good the deal is though, OP would need to compare it to what other stores are charging
