Thanks all for your help and input. Now for the thrilling conclusion:

We went with this one, and I set it up for him at our family Christmas. It's slick, quiet, and fast. I think it'll serve him well.

What monitor and keyboard? Just curious what your gramps is going to use. decent sized monitor and USB standard sized keyboard? My dad is in his 80s and needs standard sized stuff. No slim K/M.

Nothing fancy. He uses an older HP 1050p resolution* 27" monitor, then a wired Logitech keyboard and a wireless mouse. He didn't get a new monitor/keyboard/mouse for this--if it ain't broke, no need to upgrade.

*I'd not seen a 1050p in the wild before.

Never heard of 1050p. But if that’s what 16:10 is then I guess it makes sense. Still a weird res.

m4 mini mac or solid thinkcentre m75 series if. He had really basic needs so also dont skimp on something utterly cheap, if system starts lagging etc, it will only increase frustration wirh older people

16:10 screen, I used to have a similar. Strangest resolution I had on a screen was a 1152p Dell (2048x1152). A cool middle ground between 1080 & 1440.
