China calls for less 'effeminate' men in videogames and bans 'gay love'

Yea, I never claimed otherwise. That poster in particular was saying promotion wasn't a thing and then in their next post said they wanted to take a few posters in to watch them have gay sex. It's not at all the same thing.

Its all essentially imagery. Im just pointing out the general tolerance for "locker room" talk when it comes to heterosexuality, but particularly men to women, as being commonplace, widely accepted, encouraged or ignored. I mean hell, there was a lot sexualization of Rivet, a made up female video game alien Lombax....think it led to discussions about Furries.

I'm not chinese but maybe the majority of them are happy with their government overall. It's their call where they want to keep the cccp in charge. They are a completely different society with different values. They probably see us and wonder why we would ever accept our leadership. The US leadership is pretty broken right and they spend more time fighting than addressing social issues. Overall the Chinese leadership has been addressing social issues and improving conditions there over last 70 years. So it will be interesting to see how both forms of government pan out in the long term.
And I thought ResetEra was the only Chinese sponsored videogame forum…

I believe that heterosexually is the default outcome for the vast majority of people and is the majority. Homosexuality is a much smaller outcome in people and those people also have a place in society. I think the lgbtq community should have rights the same rights as everyone else, as adults.

I think that children's games and other entertainment content shouldn't promote sexuality in either direction. I think that kids should learn about it at home. I don't like the idea of teachers talking to minors about sexuality or promoting agendas at school. They should be neutral.

I think that it's OK to talk to teens about the biology once they are older, but kids in pre-k and to 8th grade shouldn't be exposed to any sexuality.

Some game companies are already making different versions of their games for western and Chinese audiences. As long as this doesn't affect games made for western audiences I don't care what they do

It will.

Or do you think it's economically feasible to make 2 versions of the same game?
We're all gonna get china-ized.
The only defense is... well... VOTE WITH YOUR FUCKING WALLETS FOR ONCE.

China gets along well with the "woke" people internationally (divide), but wants nothing to do with them at home. And even though people who happily stare at screens all day are probably much easier to keep under control by a repressive authoritarian communist regime, they want none of that and prefer tougher people (conquer).

I can't deny that videogames are part of this story obviously, but videogames seem to be a small part of a much bigger story IMO.

Sun Tzu would be very proud.

China are concerned about the feminization of men, or men becoming "soft". This is not homophobic because it is nothing to do with sexuality. A straight man can be effeminate and a gay man can be masculine.

It is really not too dissimilar to JFKs warning in the 1960s that American boys were becoming soft.

You're way off the mark.

There is a reason that these two subjects are being "adressed" simultaneously. Its because they are considered one and the same in this context. Men expressing feminine behavior are often associated with homosexuality.

If the Chinese want to change their government then it's up to them. We shouldn't interfere since that same cccp has also increase the quality of life for the vast majority of chinese and raised the country to a super power level all within 70 years. I'm pretty sure that the cccp has a lot more local support than what the western media portrays. I've never lived there but there is plenty of footage from all over China that their standard of living is on part with western countries.

And by the way, it wasn’t your CCP raising the quality of life. It was Nixon.

Don't conflate China with the CCP, guys. It's overwhelming the CCPs hands being played.

The CCP has a vision of a future, that on paper can seem like a better one. The problem is that instead of promoting honest encouragement programs to motivate people, they instead choose to force and threaten.

It's the means to an end situation.

I support programs and would even restrict companies that develop games for children to do so only in educational/skill building fashion. Most children do not have sexual drives or think of adult activities (such as managing funds), until they are close to the teen years, so I can get behind enforcing restriction, in these terms.

I can speak from personal experience. I've played games since I was a child, which became my primary method of escaping life. Over the years I realize that this was NOT a productive activity to engage in, but I still do it because I''m accustomed to it. It's what puts my mind at ease, as an adult. I can't blame my family or the government for this, now. HOWEVER, if I wasn't allowed to play games as much (if at all, while i was growing up), then I could have turned out completely different, in turns of my direction in life.

I think Kids playing games that reward them, for learning or getting better at something, is a noble cause.

With that said; I can understand what the CCP is trying to do, but they are authoritarian in method and I don't support that.

Is that the purpose of the EU? To homogenize culture? Rhetorical question, feel free to not answer.
I'm not sure how deep to go into this subject in a gaming forum, but I do believe that one of the natural consequences of the EU, and really and large political body, is to homogenize culture. Some political actors want to do that explicitly, but it's at best an unintended consequence of almost any political assemblage above a certain scale.

China calls for less 'effeminate' men in videogames | PC Gamer

In August, China announced new regulations which will strictly limit when and for how long people under the age of 18 are allowed to play online games: Just one hour per day, from 8-9 pm, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and official holidays. That rule took effect September 1. All players are also now required to register using their real names, and game companies are strictly forbidden from offering any services to unregistered players.

According to a South China Morning Post report last week, China has also slowed its approval process for new online games in order to help combat online gaming addiction among young people. A source told the site that the goal is to "cut the number of new games" and "reduce gaming addiction," amid concerns that the number of games approved in the first half of 2021 was "a bit too aggressive."

The slowdown had been in place for at least a month prior, according to the report. It's not known when the approval process is expected to return to its normal rate.

This isn't the first time that Chinese authorities have pumped the brakes on approvals for new games. In March 2018, the government stopped issuing game license approvals completely for the remainder of the year, which lopped a massive $190 billion in market value off of Chinese tech giant Tencent, and hit some small developers even harder.

Word of the slowdown followed a meeting between Chinese officials and representatives of Tencent and NetEase, an internet technology company. The purpose of that meeting was to reinforce the need to enforce restrictions, and also to lay out other content guidelines: Games with a "wrong set of values," including "gay love," are to be avoided, according to the report, and the companies were also instructed to ease up on monetization and profit-focused game mechanics.

"The authorities ordered the enterprises and platforms to tighten examination of the contents of their games," a separate report on english.gov.cn, the official English-language website of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, said. "Obscene and violent content and those breeding unhealthy tendencies, such as money-worship and effeminacy, should be removed."

That report also called for potential monopolies to be resisted, avoidance of game designs that induce addiction, for new restrictions on ads "involving celebrity endorsement," and for new rules related to livestreaming.

Xinhua's English-language website didn't reference any specific content guidelines, but warned that the country's Minister of Culture and Tourism "will strengthen education on moral standards for all practitioners in the entertainment sector."

This might be the first time that negativity toward effeminate men in videogames has been made official policy, but it's not actually a new attitude. Compare, for instance, the differences between the North American art for the flamboyant (and, as far as I know, canonically gay) League of Legends character Taric, who's had two different looks in the West across the game's long history,

University of Hong Kong associate professor Geng Song told AFP (via Yahoo! News) that the crackdown is driven in part by the perception that "effeminate men are physically weak and emotionally fragile," and are thus unable to effectively defend the nation from threats. Gaming itself may also be seen by some leaders as "contributing to a softening of character in young men," Lancaster University Chinese Studies senior lecturer Derek Hird added.

Tencent was already pretty well committed to cracking down on youth gaming in China. It rolled out a facial recognition system earlier this year to keep minors from gaming all night, and in August it cut allowable playtime, ramped up the frequency of its facial recognition checks to an "all-day inspection" system, and banned playing online entirely for people under 12. But that wasn't enough to prevent even tighter regulations, which—unsurprisingly—have had a negative effect on its bottom line: After a precipitous decline through July and early August, its share price had begun to climb back, but took another downward turn after word of the new content guidelines and slowed game approvals was made public. NetEase's share price has followed an almost identical pattern.

....

As much as I enjoy woke companies being kicked in the balls and be denied the sweet Chinese dollar they drool for ...

This is just wrong.

I don't like gay characters or other minorities being shoved down my throat and make me feel like I'm being lectured, but I don't like gay characters getting banned from gaming altogether. Yes, I know, it's China we're talking about, not exactly the most democracy-friendly country in the world, but the point still stands.

On one hand, you have Netflix and Amazon telling you your story and staff need to have women and gay people just because, and on the other hand you have assholes in China attempting to ban wokeness altogether.

Why does it have to be an 'either / or' situation? Let writers write the stories and characters they want to write. Let them hire the people they want/need to hire. Stop pandering to either side. Why is it so hard?

Has Blizzard responded to this?

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
If the cultural values of Hungary don't match those of the rest of the EU, they probably shouldn't be part of the same political union.

In that case all eastern European/Balkan countries have to leave the EU, because Hungary is really not an outlier.

You’re basically saying that I’m fine with the gays as long as I don’t see them anywhere.
It's the good ol' argument "I'm fine with people of color, but..." just now it is "I'm fine with homosexuals, but..."

It's especially funny when those type of arguments come from men that just scream insecurity from all ends.

You’ve clearly got a lot to say about China and the gays, 11 of your 14 posts are in this one thread

That’s why past attempts to unify Europe failed. But hey, diversity is a strength 😋

Hopefully, this gets the console makers to wake up and stop trying to appease China. Not counting on it, though.

Minors should not be exposed to any sexuality in my opinion. I think that if a is games for mature audiences then It is all good. Kids can be easily persuaded and manipulated. I believe that if they are homosexual by birth it will develop naturally, but I also believe that some people can be influenced. I'm an afro latino and I don't mind seeing diversity of race in games as long as it is not forced. A lot of games lately are focused on forcing agendas on players and I'm not a fan.

When you say any form of sexuality... What do you mean exactly. I am gay, I have a husband, and I also have a child. He sees my sexuality every day because he sees me with my husband.

Everyday, children are exposed to sexuality of their parents. Are you confusing sexuality with actual acts of sex?
