I was thinking between 7-10 million, no way did i think it was possible for a sub 5 million for the Series S/X.

These hardware numbers are terrible for Microsoft. Anyone trying to sell you on "Microsoft no longer cares about sales" pitch is full of bs.

It's at the point where I think they shouldn't even do a true next-gen console now. Just make the best handheld money and expertise can buy, label that an Xbox and have it support Xbox One and Xbox Series games. Release it in 2026 and support it for 5 strong years. Do what Nintendo did and have it support "TV play" by having a cradle that comes with it. Sell it for $500-$750 (depending on screen type and SSD space).

Cross gen games will still be made in 2031, even if the PS6 comes out in 2028.

I think business wise, they are still going to release a console next generation. The question is, will it be for a loss, or straight high end profit driven. Certainly, it will be interesting to see what they do.

Both S SneakersSO and HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 said it's going to be 1k+ pretty much or near that. I don't think it's a coincidence that Phil also mentioned that number during the last time he brought up consoles. So I think that's what we are looking at for sure when it comes to consoles. There's no point in continuing to subsidize hardware if you're aren't even seeing any growth. Better to release it and make a small profit and see who sticks around and hope the rest move to PC and possibly sign up for GP there.

I expect at least that $999 and agree with you its no coincidence Phil used that same number saying he knows that machine wont grow the player base

My man, if they couldn't fight against Sony in the traditional console space, how do you think they're going to do in the space dominated by Nintendo and that has the PCMR niche locked by anything supporting Steam?

That's what I was asking before, what they do now? Go with a windows lite handheld system (a MS Windows System) that support Steam and other stores or go with an Xbox handlheld with its walled garden secure making it even more niche?

Yep

As I said before, MS is soft-exiting hardware. It will be offered as an olive branch to legacy xbox consumers that own digital libraries to carry it forward. It will be good hardware at a premium that may or may not be cheaper just to go buy your own PC at that point.

I also suspect they may bring BC to the PC in some fashion?

Either way they seem to have given up on the console market and ceded it to Sony. Getting outsold 3:1 in home territory, and 20:1+ in EU/Asia.....it's over at this point. What spooked them last year (collapse in hardware sales), just accelerated this year. They are transforming into third party and doing it swiftly on the software side, and gradually on the hardware side.

Oh wow! I never thought of it that way. So Phil is basically planting the seed for what MS' expectations are if\when they release that $1,000 console next-gen.

If worldwide Ps5 pro made even just 300k sales last November, that is already a win for Sony, knowing how expensive it is and that is already profitable. But It could be more than 300k. While if its 500k then that is exceeding expectations.

There is rumour that it already has at the beginning of the year but not been said. Production dates on bought XSX seem to be from 2023 too. I personally think somebody would have known by now if it had and there is still a trickle of supply, but who knows.

"Great games won't increase console sales"
"Great console won't increase console sales"

Why even go through the motions except to "save face"?

The console wars are over. Fear the console fallout.

We are seeing the Console Fallout now on GAF. The following shouldn't have been talked about like they were, but alas......

- PS Portal was attacked when first shown
- PS5 Pro was attacked for even existing
- Playstation is now being accused of doing hidden money-hatting of 3rd party games (Black Myth Wukong)
- Intergalactic first trailer generating over 100 pages of comments in one week

The Console Fallout is among us already.

WHOA! He did say great game wouldn't increase consoles sales (aka won't change their console's hopes this generation). I can't believe this dude really does explain away years in advance that doing a great job at something won't help things. I legit don't understand where Phil thinks they should go from here.

The PS5Pro being 950€ is the real fallout here.

Astro Bot must be the best-performing Japan Studio game in the US ever at this point, right?
Depends what you mean by "Japan Studio". I reckon the original Gran Turismo is the best performance one unless I'm missing something obvious.

Japan Studio as in "games developed by internal units at SIEJ", but you're right! Gran Turismo 1 was directly developed by SIE before the rest of the series was handled by Polyphony Digital. So, outside of GT1 it is?
GT3 sold more around 14M with GT1 at around 11M
Yep, but that was by PD.

Polyphony Digital was established AFTER Gran Turismo (12/97) in 4/98. The first game was developed directly by SIE.
The key staff was moved into the newly established company.

Yes but it was still made by Polys Entertainment with the same people that form Polyphony Digital lead by Kazunori Yamauchi.

Probably, unless Arc the Lad or Everybody's Golf was way more popular in the US than I remember.

The point is that when the first GT was made, that team were part of Japan Studio. Afterwards they weren't.

Arc the Lad (the trilogy as a whole) wasn't localized until 2002, and by a third-party company at that. Everybody's Golf isn't at mega bomb territory, but it never caught up in the West like it did in Japan.
But all those games were developed by external studios so I don't count them, same way I didn't count Bloodborne or Death Stranding either.

Makes sense!
