Console gamers need to recalibrate their pricing expectations from here on out

It's all about the ecosystems now. I think we will see something similar to phones moving forward, just longer gaps between devices (not yearly). Like I said earlier, they don't care what system you play on as long as its theirs (Sony/Microsoft). How long will dedicated systems be around? I don't know, but there will always probably be SOME market for it (if you are willing to pay). I think streaming will become the "budget" tier and if you are willing to pay through the nose you could get a dedicated box.

Remember, I'm not saying I like how things are going but YOU choose to pay to play or not. I see a lot of people saying this is crazy for them to charge this amount for the PS5 Pro. Don't buy it then? There is a PS5 available. Yeah I'd love a PS5 Pro for $500 as well but that isn't what they are charging, nor do I think they want to lose money on selling it that cheaply. PS5 Pro will be the premium device from Sony currently, whether you think its worth the money or not.

How do you win?
I want a 400 console. Oh no it has no power. I want sony to give me more power and raise the price so i can play 60fps.

Here you go fans here is power at 700.

What the fuck , 700 fuck you i want that power for 500.

Well, the answer is quite simple: people are willing to walk into a walled garden and lock themselves in there if the creator of said walled garden is willing to subsidize that power upfront. Specially with the console being digital by default... They're willing to put up with Sony's inflated PSN prices if Sony is willing to throw them a bone and pay for some of the console. This isn't exactly a new idea either, it's just not what Sony wants to do. They probably did the math and realized the people complaining won't amount to enough cash to make that deal viable.

Yeah, that's precisely what they did. They also did it with their inflated PS+ prices. They lost a million subscribers, but, made a lot more money - and that's ultimately all corporations are going to care about. Sony won't subsidise their console hardware anymore because they don't need to loss lead anymore. Now it's a question of how much markup can they push for before they see a negative tipping point.

I wonder if having a co-CEO who has P&L responsibility over hardware impacted the price at all…Additionally, the real question is whether the price will hold at $699 or if we will see it gradually increase just like the base console.

For now, that will probably work. But Sony needs to figure out what to do with their PS4 users. That library isn't growing anymore and that dries up sales...

Sony is almost certainly selling the PS5 Pro at very miniscule profit margins.
