Final Fantasy XVI is a Good Game

This is my first Final Fantasy game and I fucking love it.

I hope they iterate on the foundation laid with this game in terms of gameplay. If we get another FF with this kind of combat system I'll play that one too.
I would suggest playing 7 remake and XV.
2 latest modern FF games that are both very different but don't feel like ancient ff games.

I tried 7R when it came to PS+ a few years ago and I hated the combat. I stopped when I finished Chapter 3.
I was basically in the same boat. I only played the demo for FF7R and didn't like it enough to care about it.
But then I ended up getting FFXVI and really liking it. After I beat XVI, I went back and I was more open and accepting of the FF7R combat and finished it.
It took XVI for me to be more open to the quazi turn based and team member crap in FF7R. I still don't like team management type stuff, but I was able to get through the game without caring about it too much.

Isn't that a subscription-based MMO? Negative interest in that tbh.
That's fair. XVI seems more like a entry point for newcomers to FF. I prefer VIIR over XVI easily. XVI is a more casual friendly kind of game.
Stranger of Paradise probably has the best Action Combat among them all though.

Yea, XVI got me into FF. Then I beat VIIR and bought stranger of paradise and ever crisis for cheap, but they're in my backlog.
I plan to play Rebirth before touching my backlog.

It was okay. I enjoyed it,. Definitely not really want I wanted out of an FF game, Wish there was more gear customization and party members etc. But I finished it and enjoyed it.

It's a good game that just falls so far short of its obvious potential after first act that the ultimate impression it leaves is disappointment.

I think something similar happened to Starfield. These are clearly both good games, but they should have been better.

Personally, I love all the last few FF entries (7R, 15, SoP, and 16). I think 16 would have been even better received if it didn't carry the FF name since I am sure FF purists were let down by the extremely basic RPG options.

I fucking love this game. It’s one of my fav FFs. Yeah it’s straight forward and the side quests are all painfully superfluous (but painfully necessary to get XP and mats for gear), but the world, story, characters, music and combat (for me make up for all of it). And the spectacle for many of the boss fights are fucking unmatched.

On the Pro on performance. Finally finishing up since it released.

Current build and absolutely destroying. Killed that level 50 dragon bounty while I was at 42. Used all my potions but still 😂

Game rules. Ben Starr is the man.

I went in hating it but after the 2nd or 3rd hour the story really picked up. It's really the best game in the series since 10 in my opinion but it doesn't get close to touching the older (IV-X) games. Also, it looks like ass on PS5 so i recommend PC for anyone that has that option.

It’s an okay game, but it just doesn’t nearly reach my expectations for a Final Fantasy main entry.
I never felt the polish, the twists or the quality I expect from a Final Fantasy game.

On the other hand, Rebirth is amazing, so they still know how to make great games, but it shows that the development team of XVI didn’t had much experience with single player games.

I'm new at Final Fantasy, I'm playing this right now in tandem with VII Remake on the PC and it's a good game, I really like it, but my God, so wildly different gameplay, XVI is like playing a shooter with aim assist on easy while Reamke is quite challenging, at least for me.

What I really like though more about this one is the story, it's more serious, the conversations between characters are more believable, also the romance that it's shaping up is more seriously done, basically all behave like actual humans.
VIIR on the other hand, all is good until someone opens their mouth, Jesus Christ, I mean I like goofy stuff, ok, but then it tries to have these serious moments intertwined with over the top, goofy ass character behaviours, I'm like wtf?
You can have a serious story with humor and over the top moments whilst also having the characters behaving in a more believable way.

The music is also very good, but I like it more in VIIR, the Main theme, Tifa's theme and Aerith's theme, I could listen to these all day like a junkie.
I may seem like I hate VIIR, but quite the contrary, even if I wanna blow my brains out most of the time someone talks, I really like it and look forward to Rebirth.

Youve nailed one of the 2 reasons ive hated it, the other one being that the villain characters are unexplained, the monitor, helicopter and motorcycle guys for example (if Rebirth has a boat guy ill die of laughter) game acts like i am supposed to know them, but it feels like theyve just materialized (no pun intended) out of nowhere.

Can anyone chime in if Rebirth is the same? I know that the Chadley character is there unfortunately, but is it better in this regard otherwise? Really hope i wont go back to hating FF after having such a great time with 16.

Yeah, exactly, this is another reason, but I guess we can put these 2 reasons in the writing overall.
Look, I like Sephiroth even if he too behaves a bit like the rest of them -- and I know the whole story of OG VII and how it ends and understand some decisions that they've taken story wise, they don't want to spoil everything because they decided to split it in 3 parts -- but yeah, even so, give some little backstory to this character, or don't introduce him this early.

Spot on with how some of those guys are presented, this is what I like about XVII, there are a ton of characters and locations, factions, politics etc. but it's nicely done, there's that active lore stuff if you pause, it has much better world building.

I think it's the same, from the stuff I watched on YT, couldn't help myself and the conversations are like in Remake and the romance -- if you can even call whatever VII has a romance -- it's like early high-school level, I mean I like some cringy, awkward stuff as the next guy, but this is whatever it is.

Even so, don't know what it is, I like FF VII, I like some characters, I kind of like the combat, although had some problems understanding it, can't say that I fully do or what exactly wants me to do sometimes, I like the world and the general idea behind it, also already said it, the music, lol, it's a weird feeling with this game.

It's half a 10/10 game and half a 6/10. You can tell most of their budget went into the big setpiece battles and cutscenes. Every in between the big story moments is bad.

The game clearly didn't make an impact though. Ben Starr's performance was kind of wasted. Clive was an excellent foundation for a great character, but he doesn't have much going on with him after the time skip.

This is the perfect way of looking at it. I was in love with the game for the first half, then the second half disappointed me with how mediocre it was.

Ultima was such a generic final villain. It should have been Odin, the only other character who had more wasted potential than Clive. They set up some weird mommy complex backstory for him, and then offed him without going into any detail. Clive had mommy issues and childhood trauma, Odin had mommy issues and childhood trauma. You have your parallel right there. Why did they make the main villain a fucking space alien.

You're making me want to replay it!

The battle theme is so good

Love it so much I double dip on the pc version during the last steam sale thinking my rtx3060 lappy can run it with dlss.
Just lol is all I have to say.
Will be my first game to stress test my 50xx pc build later.

There is a mod to increase the difficultty for the normal mode in XVI. I wanted to test it out but my lappy vomits blood everytime I try to play the game.

If Square Enix is not going to go back to a smart turn-based system and even "re-invent and modernize" it I doubt they will ever be as succesful and famous as before with Final Fantasy.
I believe they lost a lot of "Reference" reputation by going that Action oriented fighting system route.

The singular best idea they had to find a way in between was FF XII, however, fans of the franchise only realized that later and I am not sure they really got the message..

Lol, I had equipped the talisman to automatically evade attacks and the one where the skills where just one button, don't know were I got those, unequipped those and is a bit better.
I figured it's part of the game, so yeah, never imagined those made the game a snooze fest. Still, even so it isn't the most challenging game, far from VIIR.

I have an RTX 4070 and at 4k DLSS Q isn't all the time good, Balanced is more so, but is so damn blurry. Even DLSS Q is still blurry, comparing it to Remake which is running native 4k and looks a lot crisper.

Chadley is 100x worse now. He handles every single overworld quest in the game. The additions to Remake are still in Rebirth, but their roles have been diminished somewhat. There are new additions though. The story and dialogues are absolutely stupid.

The game isn't nearly as bleak and focused as the original, which also had its goofy moments but in here its far more apparent.

FFVII Rebirth has more freedom and content than Remake, but all things considered its the same thing. I rather play the original again.

Never played the OG, but I watched some videos about the story and my impression is sort of the same, the original had a serious tone with goofy moments, this is a goofy game with serious moments.

I'm curious about the final game, as in the OG there is that bleak, serious section with Cloud and Tifa, wonder what they're gonna change, or if they're gonna use the same cryptic weak dialogue as these 2.

Yep, first half was a good 8 (in a old school, non-exagerated scale of scores) second half is barely a 6.

I bailed out when the writing took an absolute nosedive and never finished it, odin demise\explanation was beyond pathetic.

Having zero challenge whatsoever for 98% of the game also didn't helped at all.
