Games where the Original release was better than the Remake or Remaster

RE1 to RE3

RE1 had that funny charm that the RE1 Remake lacked but I'll give both of them a 10/10

RE2 is the best RE game still with the A/B having no repeat bosses so it really felt like Claire and Leon were adventuring at the same time instead of having repeat bosses like the remake. RE2 is a perfect 10/10 while RE2 Remake is a 9/10.

RE3 is also a 10/10 having more areas and the choice system which spiced things up a little. RE3 Remake is a 9/10. Had they include more areas like the original and expanded on the city with a revamped Gravedigger, it could have easily been the best RE game ever.

Ratchet and Clank 1 to 3 cause I heard the HD remaster collection had bugs, haven't tried the remasters though.

Majora's Mask cause of the Deku hop and some other things I heard that I forgot. Haven't tried the remaster.

The original PSX version is much better.

It works better for the discourse if you read past the topic title (y)
Oh, I read past the title. I just also read between the lines. This thread is basically a thinly veiled support group for people who think ‘remakes bad’ by default. Sure, you’re technically asking for ‘examples’ of originals that were better, but let’s not pretend this isn’t the same tired discourse that happens every time a remake or remaster exists

Obviously, bad technical remakes are bad. No one’s out here defending buggy, broken messes. But let’s be real, that’s not what most of you are actually mad about. Half the time, it’s not about ‘bad remakes,’ it’s just about change in general

Like clockwork, people come crawling out to complain that their precious games all were perfect. You can dress it up as ‘discussion’ all you want, but it’s the same old song and dance: Nostalgia is king

So yeah, I read past the title. And I see this for exactly what it is

Per the topic title.

What are some examples of games where you preferred the original release to any remake / remaster / 'director's cut' or re-releases it got later with brief reasons why.

Some notable examples that come off the top of my head:

1. All of MGS 3's re-releases have omitted the very unique Guy Savage mini-game, which makes for a good case that the original PS2 releases are the best.

Wait what, what is this? I don't recall this at all, I've finished the game 25 times.. am I retarded?

The original Majoras Mask is better than the 3ds remake.

Unlike with OoT3D which was mainly a 1;1 remake, they implemented changes to majoras mask like incorporating weaknesses in the bosses and heavily nerfing movement speed for the goron roll and zora dash which ultimately made the remake feel more like a demake

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

When you're put in the cell after the torture scene, save the game, quit and reload. You need to do this while in the cell and before the escape sequence.

Snake has a 'nightmare' which is that game, called Guy Savage. It was rumored to be a slice of a hack and slash game Konami was developing at the time. It's Snake's "nightmare" and then he wakes up after a bit.

Well you've already lost me at this point. I can't dictate everyone else's posts but all the examples I've posted are later releases that had notable differences / omissions to their original release, and not for the better.

I mean, I guess Demons Souls was better but not by much. I think if you played the OG at the time it is more nostalgic and had better aesthetics but remake is so clean and nice too.

4. Until Dawn recently got a remake which launched in a very poor state to say the least. Glitches, sub30 frame rate, notable changes to the games visual makeup that makes it feel like a cheap fan-overhaul in some places with some enhancements like better looking character models. It stings more because the original can be played in a mostly stable high performance on PS5's.

Got to disagree with this one, at least after playing it fully patched on PS5 Pro. Though unnecessary, I really liked the changes and the extra sections. I understand the original is still great, but would recommend the latter if someone were to play it for the first time (but not at full price)

Tales of Symphonia, gamecube version
:(

Oof, yeah, one of the top examples of bad remasters.

Don't have a Pro but the experience was pretty sub-par on the base PS5 at launch. Not just worse performance, but any time the game used video files (intro etc), it came with the worst stuttering ever.

I can only fit so much in the topic title.
Good point. In that case both Sonic Adventure games sucked on GameCube compared to DreamCast. Thankfully modders have fixed what was broken.

Wind Waker GC is the best. The bloom bonanza of the Wii U version doesn't bring out the wonderful celshading like a true remaster would have.

the Wii U version has multiple gameplay improvements that fix nearly every design flaw of the original.

so it might be visually divisive, but it is by far the better game otherwise.

better inventory management and better sea navigation thanks to the touch screen, better first person controls thanks to gyro and being able to move, it has the fast sail, and it has the shortened triforce quest at the end

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is two steps forward and three steps back from the original.

The voice acting, reactivity, art direction, balance and overall charm is worse than the original, before even getting into the controversies of cut mechanics and lines of dialogue. Still fun but lacking, and there are some additions that are welcome so it's not universally worse. Still, the original is the better game in my view.

Yes, but they messed the snow up a bit, as in snowstorms look a tad worse without as many particles on screen.
They also didn't add the dynamic lighting from the shots, which was a real bummer in my opinion. I still think the remake is the better version by far, but it's a shame it wasn't clearly better in every category.

Yeah, it is the lack of proper dynamic lighting from weapons that destroyed GLQuake for me… dynamic lighting adds a lot to the atmosphere even lighting from muzzle flashes and the like.

Yeah same. I kinda think destroys is a strong term, but I definitely mostly agree with you though, dynamic lighting from the shots adds tons of atmosphere to any fps, and removing it is damn near a sin. I know it won't happen, but damn it'd be great if they added the dynamic lighting back to Prime remake for the Switch 2, but that's silly thinking on my part and it definitely isn't Nintendo's m.o. to add free improvements to older games, so I'm not holding my breath.

The lighting not being present in the remake bothered me less than it being missing in Trilogy. That one made no sense at all. Though I was hoping it would be back, but remake is still really good regardless.

Assassins Creed 3 Remastered was and is a disgrace

Indeed

The more remasters I play the more I realize how much worse they tend to be than the originals. Look at the recent Lollipop Chainsaw remaster ....awful!

Why is it that devs these days just "have" to change aspects of a remaster that either didn't need to be changed or people didn't ask for to be changed?

It's like they just can't help themselves. Oh and Until Dawn Remake really sucks with how they couldn't pay for a SINGLE music license from the original! Kiss my ass devs.

Final Fantasy 7 is the first one that comes to mind here.
Easily the worst offender in my mind.

What's wrong with someone preferring the original, exactly? You sound personally offended, almost as if it's not possible for someone to enjoy an original more and any reason they might give would be deemed immaterial to you.

I feel like I might be the only human on this planet that likes this remake over the original. I respect the original but man that gamecube remake in my opinion is the bees knees. I loved everything about that game. Probably my most played Metal Gear game besides 2.

I don't necessarily like it more, but I also liked it. I love the gameplay enhancements, but really the original experience is just so classic. I do think Twin Snakes is overhated though in general, but they did go a bit far with the Matrix scenes.
