Is the Switch 2’s portability of any value to you?

Yes, but not as much as being able to dock it.
This precisely. If it were just a portable, I would have far less interest. I need docked mode for couch co-op with the missus which is most of my gaming time these days. But, if I want to play something solo while we have something on in the background, portability is a big sell.

That, and it's just nice to have something smaller than a stationary console to take on trips or over to friends'. The hybrid design really works for me.

I've had my Switch since day one and I'm not lying when I say I must have used it undocked for no more than three hours in all these years.
I would gladly buy a Switch 2 version that is just a home console.

The SWITCH aspect of Switch specifically is killer for me. The last time I really enjoyed this was Game Boy games that saved on cart swapped between a Game Boy and Super Game Boy/Game Boy Player. This was an insane feature for me back then too, the ability to play the same game, with the same save, both handheld and TV, in a very smooth fashion.

I like both portable and TV gaming, and don't want to have to commit a save file (or game purchase) to one or the other. Switch basically destroyed this as its USP.

No

The only value of it being portable to me is, is having the larger install base to keep them games coming to us old timers that don't got no fucking time to be looking at no tiny ass screens lol

Look at it like this folks, if we got some um "home console" and them kids got the Portable, that fucking home console would be left in the dust, zero support etc

The fact that emulation is so great on phones and tablets, both iOS and Android makes for a great experience of replaying the old classics. I find it easier to experience those games portably.

I've tried playing games on my phone's and I just can't do it! I tried native games and streaming. The problem is, I'm sick of phones and how often you need to pick the f****** up. And then beeping and dinging for work and all this s***.

It's kind of like people who work on a computer so they don't want to come home and play PC at a desk. That's also me, by the way. I have a PC hooked up to the TV that is strictly for games and has nothing work related on it. My browser isn't even synced on there.

Never cared much for the docking. It was a fun gimmick for a while, but I started playing portable only pretty quickly and ultimately replaced my 'proper' Switch for a Lite.

It used to be. These days I just don't have time to play games once I leave my house. I'm leaving my house to do shit. Not really in a position to play games.

No, that was same case with even portable systems like Gameboy, DS and 3DS.....I buy system solely because it has games I want to play.

Switch was the gateway drug and the Steamdeck made me an addict. I wouldn’t go as far to say that I am anti-console just pro handheld.

The PS5 / Series X will be the last consoles I buy that I can’t take with me. Tethered means death.

Yes it is. Despite having a PS5( and previously a Series X), my Legion Go ( and the Steam Deck before it) is where I do most of my gaming even with the TV and home consoles sitting right there staring at me.

Traditionally I am a console gamer. Even with handhelds, I greatly prefer using tv tuners or accessories like the GBP for GCN. Very rarely would I use the handheld (if forced, out of town, whatever). So when I bought the Switch, I honestly didn't think much of the portability feature. Shockingly, I found out for the first time that I loved it. I love setting it up on a random table, detaching the controllers and going to town. I still primarily play on the dock, but for someone like me, I'm shocked how much I both use and enjoy portable mode. It has awesome utility - I also love being able to pick up the device and just shift to any other dock in the house or elsewhere to continue playing.

Long story short : the Switch is everything I did NOT know I needed.

Absolutely, that’s a big selling point. To be fair now days if I travel I will grab a Steam Deck OLED most likely. However, once Switch 2 hits and some decent games come out, I will travel with it, no question.

I also use it all the time on a couch when the wife watches her shows or when I got an hour to kill waiting for kids various activities.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Of course it is. For a lot of people.

Personally, I only used the Switch portably a handful of times and never particularly enjoyed it. I'd rather just play it at home, or not at all. The Switch 2 will be anchored firmly to my TV.

I have a Switch and ROG Ally.
Switch has been in the closet for the past six years. The Ally has been in the closet since August 2023.

So no, I don't think Switch 2's portability will have any value to me.

Used mine as a handheld a few times at launch to try the 'novelty', starting a gaming session on the tv and finishing at the bed, but, for me, the lack of ergonomics and worse performance made the novelty not worth, so it became a dock only Switch.
The same fate, I believe, will be bestowed on the Switch2...

I didn't have a Wii or Wii U. I had a DS and 3DS. I would not buy a Switch if it wasn't portable. It's nice to play laying around anywhere and to take on work trips. I have a GameCube and N64. I would never buy a screen-less Nintendo console again. I have a desktop with a 7950x, 64GB memory, a slew of NVME's and a 7600xt (I use my computer more for productivity than gaming). The most common way I play my PC is by streaming it to a mobile device. I have a dummy plug and set it to a resolution of 2560x1080 and most games I play support 21:9. Portability matters to me

I gotta say I prefer the Steam Deck's button layout, but I'm down with another round of joycons/pro controllers.

To answer the question: portability is EVERYTHING to me.

not anymore for me.
I can't use a small screen to play anymore... so much so that even cell phone games on external monitor
If I'm understanding this correctly... You play cell phone games but hook them up to an external monitor? This is the most bizarre gaming related thing I've ever heard of.

Not really. AirPlay an emulator to your TV while traveling, or even playing at home.

Someone only has a console plugged in to their tv, so they cast their phone to their TV to run an emulator.

Look at Samsung Dex, smartphones are basically mini computers nowadays.

With the Switch 2 motherboard being so small, I don't see why Nintendo couldn't release a Mac Mini sized stationary console.

Because some games will rely on touch screen, camera, accelerometer, etc. and they don’t want to fragment the install base. Plus it’s easier to market one as opposed to two.

Agreed. Plus the market for this is just too small imho for Nintendo. I think its redundant and they are best to just stick to how they have it now.

This is a beggars can't be choosers type situation.

After Wii U.... I don't think those that like the home console style really have a place to be even calling for something like this lol Not enough exist to actually buy it, to make it make sense.

I'm content with just having them support their portable and an option for us to just play it on the TV thur the dock. So much so, if Nintendo put out a stand alone home console version of it, I wouldn't buy it.... so I can miss out on support? So it can become some red headed step child of the company like Wii U? lol No thank you.

My primary use of the Switch is in hand while in bed. I do use it away from home at times. Like when I take my son to soccer practice because it’s too far away to drive back so I just stay there. So yes, it’s critical for me that the Switch is still a portable.

Agreed on all accounts. It would sell somewhat because it’s Nintendo, but it would be a PS Vita TV type situation.

Plus knowing Nintendo it wouldn’t even be a good deal in comparison and I’m sure they’d even position it as such to not undercut the main unit.

That would be a problem in docked mode anyway but I definitely agree on the other points.

If they were releasing an underpowered $450 console, I would not buy it without a handheld mode. At least this way I can justify it by convincing myself it is a portable that happens to dock.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I've spent at least 99% of the time with the Switch 1 playing in handheld mode. So portability for the upcoming hardware is of the utmost importance to me.
