Still enough of a risk because of the connector design to be a fire risk, regardless of the customer didn't push hard enough. Peoples were talking to recall these back then too. Either way, I'm on good ol 8pin and seeing the prices of these GPUs and scarcity, seems I'm on that GPU for years to come.

Well there have been design regressions on that front which have contributed to the 50 series being worse than the 40 series (and the 30 series cards that used this connector):

In addition, this time round they seem to have removed the power protection from the PCIE slot, which has resulted in situations like this:

So instead of them learning from the 40 series power connector fiasco, they've doubled down and made things worse. I have no idea why they even decided to go down this road in the first place, 8 and 6 pin cables were never a problem that needed to be solved.

You realie they both sit at the same dinner table no christmas?
The whole market is set up by them both. That's why there is no real competition
Which is why we need to resurrect 3DFX! (I loved my voodoo3 and voodoo5 5500 with that super sleek and sexy Glide api - ran like silk! ).
They had the market until one bad move and nvidia bought them out.
Hell bring back Matrox, Oak Technologies , S3, Silcon graphics, Trident and others.

Competition and innovation is needed and when its a bilateral price fixing operation, we aren't seeing anything change.

I am going to go with bullshit until further notice.

Sounds like they want a 5090 and trying to scare people so they can get a chance to buy one...kidding... i think...who the fk knows lol

Anyway. If there were lots of fire incidents with the 5090, would have seen it by now. But so far up till this point, there were more burnt 4090s than 5090s around the same time frame. And no cards bullshit line doesn’t work. Here in Canada we getting cards every day. They just sell out within 10 mins

I think quite a few folks have these now. A store here had about 50 in stock this sunday, and have a few left still.
Those were sold in pre-builds btw.
Not as many available boxed, but seems many stores here gets a few from time to time.
Definitly not as bad as the first few weeks.
which store? but they were all in prebuilds, that's slimy predatory practice.

damn she didn't have a bucket of water nearby just in case or anything?

They typically keep a flame-resistant towel draped around their neck for this exact situation. If flames ignite, the best response is to calmly drop the torches and quickly cover their head and shoulders with the towel to smother the fire. Not take off like a Hellcat at full throttle, fanning the flames the way Nvidia has been lately.

What should a 5090 user have to hand?

1. Flame resistant towel
2. Bucket of water
3. Powder fire extinguisher
4. Under volt it to 5070 performance

The good news is that the scarcity of the 5090s may have saved a lot of people from disaster, myself included. That said, I’m still tempted to sell my 4090 for an absurd price, live off PlayStation, Switch and Xbox for a while, then buy another 4090 once the madness dies down. Then wait for the 6000 series cards to release and upgrade, presuming things take a turn for the better.

Edit: I might even dig out my old 780 Ti from the closet and see how it handles the cheesy yet fun games I often find myself playing.

RUMOR DEBUNKED, update to link in the OP

y'all with the premature chest thumping need to go take a cold shower.

UPDATE: Your Game Specialist has retracted the claim that Nvidia has issued an RTX 5090 recall. The customer who was told that they could not receive their graphics card due to the recall is now getting their unit next week and the retail outlet is conducting an internal investigation. The new story can be found HERE.

Rocked my 8800 GTX until it died, then upgraded to a 980. Did the same with my 980, then upgraded to a 3080. With the way things are going, I'll also be sitting out until the 6000 series at the earliest.

It ain't even about the prices anymore, this has become such a miserable hobby since I first started. I struggle to even even call it a hobby anymore, it's more like a necessary evil if you want to PC game.
