While PSP has a Monster bump, DS will probably have some Dragon bump.. Don't you think?

I was talking about games like Layton and Gyakuten. Dragon Quest is a different beast altogether and will eat Monster Hunter alive. But imo it is the only game announced for this year so far that will cause a huge bump for NDS.

Yeah, but don't forget that consoles are not just about the big sellers.

If third parties realize that people are buying PSP games, they will start announcing more of them.

Well, I for one welcome this resurgence of the PSP in Japan if it is a long term thing.

That is because I felt that Nintendo themselves have been too complacent in the handheld race. On the other hand, 3rd party companies just keep on amazing with new stuff announced each week.

Nintendo has done OK. Their 2008 lineup so far (JPN releases):
- Mario and Sonic @ the Olympics
- Advance Wars DS2
- Soma Bringer
- Pokemon Ranger 2
- Beautiful Character Training
- We Are Fossil Holders

In comparison, 2007 up until this point was:
- Hotel Dusk
- Wario: Master of Disguise
- Picross DS
- Jet Impulse
- English Training 2
- Yoshi's Island DS (JPN)

In each case, one non-game, five games of which one was first released in the US.
(In comparison, 2006 up until this point was Metroid Prime Pinball, English Training, Eyeshield 21 DS, Magnetica, Pokemon Ranger, Stafy 4, and one of their Kanji dictionaries. Two non-games, five games of which one was first released in the US.)

Nintendo is on the same schedule this year as the last two years for the DS.

Plenty of titles are under development, as well. Here's what we know about:
- Eternal Chronicle / Herakles VI
- Kirby Superstar Ultra Deluxe
- Fire Emblem Remake
- Wander Donkey
- Crosswords DS
- (Strong Rumour) Kirby Pinball

Also, speaking briefly from a US standpoint; now is the time in the DS's history where the most titles are JPN-only. We're entering a season whereby just about a billion titles could be localized; ASH, Soma Bringer, Card Hero, theta, Pokemon Ranger 2, We Are Fossil Holders--and that's not even including backlog like Kurikin Nano Island Story, theta, Jet Impulse, Project Hacker, etc.

You have to realize that for the last few years Nintendo has not announced stuff in advance. Panel de Pon and Ouendan 2 were both announced on the same day about one month before their release!--we're coming up on the anniversary for both of these.

I'd say there's certainly a ton more projects on the go. Consider that of 31 Nintendo dev teams or external dev teams who make games that Nintendo publishes, we know projects for only 6 of them. 25 teams are either doing nothing or working on titles we don't know about.

At some point, both Nintendo and Sony will seek to restart the arms race versus piracy, get rid of all the old software exploits, and make all the old gadgets and mods useless.

I certainly hope not.

My response to his/her post was that I wanted more square games after Dissidia, not whether DS resources should be shifted to the PSP.

That's true, and that means new hardware.

Because the holes in the PSP and the DS are so big that it will be hard to stop piracy.

PSP is trampling the competition! I expect quite a bit of backlash if it doesn't perform well on the Wii, even if it's not expected. If sony can keep enhancing PSP & PS3 connectivity, maybe that will help pull the PS3 up from the grave, I don't know.

Good job Capcom, they almost always exceed their expectations, and I got a good laugh at ethelred's soon to be MHP2G > Brawl = awesome. :lol

Since Crisis Core, SquareEnix's strategy seems to follow a similar path.

-Announce game
-Keep it secret for 90% of the development time
-Re-announce it again, saying it will be released in 3 months
-Start hyping it and marketing it like crazy

Even after all these years of success, it disappoints me greatly how companies like capcom namco, and konami never really dedicated much resources to new ds projects outside of their existing gba development teams

I'm sure that Nintendo is terrified that the DS is only selling ~50k a week in Japan. I'm pretty sure the DS outsold the PSP in the US by over 300,000 last month.

I know this a Japan sales thread but the DS is still selling absurd amounts in North America and Europe so there is really no reason for them to be concerned.

Not to mention that it is still at launch price in Japan.

sony HAS to be in talks with capcom to release a sequel to MH for PS3 as well. they just have to be.

Because PS3 = PSP?:lol

The PSP was never selling as poorly as the PS3 is.

The PS2 games sold nowhere near this, I can't imagine what the PS3 version would be like.

I don't think people quite understand that MH on conoles =/= MH on the PSP.
MH was a good seller, but before the PSP, not all that amazing.

Before, MHP, the series hadn't cracked 300k (going by Moor-Angol's site).
After MHP, with MH2, it did 577k (probably around 600k by now). That's definitely a great number, but nowhere near as great as the numbers the MHP games have pulled.
I don't see why any future MH game would do quite as well, especially on the Wii or PS3 (which haven't been able to live up to PS2 software numbers yet).

A expect a price cut for the DS soon in Japan. Not that selling 50k per week is bad, but I think it's time for a lill' price cut. Also, amazing how Mario Kart just continues to chart in the top 15.

MHP only sold about 100k more than MH2... in fact, we really don't know how well a console MH might do honestly, as we haven't had one since the series started taking off really.

I doubt that it will have a big effect if Nintendo doesn't commercialise it decently and without a big game at the same time. A price cut when Dragon Quest IX come out would be the optimum.

There are a lot of really idiotic memes that take root on GAF, but "this one improbable thing happened! How can you rule out any other obviously improbable thing?" is one of the stupider ones.

Generally when megatons, huge turnabouts, etc. happen, it's because two rules of the business or sensible guiding principles are in conflict, and people misread which one will take precedence. With DQ9, people knew that the game always goes to the largest, most all-encompassingly popular system, but people assumed that they would break this rule in order to stick with another rule: console series main entries don't move to handhelds. The surprise was that they stuck to the former rule instead of the latter.

DQIX on PSP, on the other hand, has nothing supporting it. The whole point of the DS announcement is that everyone owns one. All those people buying PSPs now aren't previously undecided gamers finally making their handheld choice -- by and large they're people who already have DSes who also want a PSP for Monster Hunter and/or media functions. And DQ is the most popular series in Japan -- there's no untapped market to be had moving to some other platform here.

S-E does really like the PSP, and (wisely) is putting some big games on there that will make them a lot of money. But it's seriously just crazytalk to suggest that DQIX will be ported or moved to that system.

It's higher.

On the PSP software side, before MHP2G's launch, the PSP was only ahead of the 360 in software sold during the month of March (i.e. looking at how its done recently). With MHP2G's launch, it shot up to #2 behind the DS. In short, PSP software sales are as "good" as they have been lately outside of MHP2G.

I said before MHP2G's launch that if it followed the MH -> MHG trend, it would have a higher first week but a lower LTD. With this second week, the initial thought would be that it'll crush MH2P's LTD. I do wonder how much of the second week total is left over demand from it being sold out the first week, though. That would show up in a much larger than normal decline for its third week, if that is the case. However, it'll still likely beat MH2P's LTD with this kind of start.

Yup, that's exactly what I was thinking as well. Nice post.

On a side note, sales for Sim city 2 are pretty good, seems to be doing better than the first one. It shows that western franchises do have a chance of succes in Japan. I wonder when western companies are seriously going to invest in Japan. Activision has a pretty big hit in there hands with Guitar Hero, why not make it more Japanese and earn some extra cash from Japan? It seems like a sure hit for them if they would use Japanese artists.

Nintendo needs to either drop the price on the DS Lite or else hurry up and release that DS Micro we all know they've got cooking (with WPA support, please).

Not really sure what Sony can do with the PS3 at this point. It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy: the games drought will continue as long as system sales are that low, and system sales will continue to be that low as long as there's a games drought. I don't really see how a Japanese publisher can justify funding a PS3 game at this point.

What they did with the PSP. Bring about an increase in sales that doesn't have to do with games on the system. On the more positive side, Wii, from lack of owner interest, lack of publisher interest, or a combination, isn't exactly running away with the traditional PS2 crowd. It is certainly in a gigantically better position to do so than the PS3, but it hasn't done it, yet.

SovanJedi said:

Because it is just wrong that the system costs more today in Japan than it did 3.5 years ago at launch.
