Well, I for one welcome this resurgence of the PSP in Japan if it is a long term thing.
That is because I felt that Nintendo themselves have been too complacent in the handheld race. On the other hand, 3rd party companies just keep on amazing with new stuff announced each week.
Nintendo has done OK. Their 2008 lineup so far (JPN releases):
- Mario and Sonic @ the Olympics
- Advance Wars DS2
- Soma Bringer
- Pokemon Ranger 2
- Beautiful Character Training
- We Are Fossil Holders
In comparison, 2007 up until this point was:
- Hotel Dusk
- Wario: Master of Disguise
- Picross DS
- Jet Impulse
- English Training 2
- Yoshi's Island DS (JPN)
In each case, one non-game, five games of which one was first released in the US.
(In comparison, 2006 up until this point was Metroid Prime Pinball, English Training, Eyeshield 21 DS, Magnetica, Pokemon Ranger, Stafy 4, and one of their Kanji dictionaries. Two non-games, five games of which one was first released in the US.)
Nintendo is on the same schedule this year as the last two years for the DS.
Plenty of titles are under development, as well. Here's what we know about:
- Eternal Chronicle / Herakles VI
- Kirby Superstar Ultra Deluxe
- Fire Emblem Remake
- Wander Donkey
- Crosswords DS
- (Strong Rumour) Kirby Pinball
Also, speaking briefly from a US standpoint; now is the time in the DS's history where the most titles are JPN-only. We're entering a season whereby just about a billion titles could be localized; ASH, Soma Bringer, Card Hero, theta, Pokemon Ranger 2, We Are Fossil Holders--and that's not even including backlog like Kurikin Nano Island Story, theta, Jet Impulse, Project Hacker, etc.
You have to realize that for the last few years Nintendo has not announced stuff in advance. Panel de Pon and Ouendan 2 were both announced on the same day about one month before their release!--we're coming up on the anniversary for both of these.
I'd say there's certainly a ton more projects on the go.
Consider that of 31 Nintendo dev teams or external dev teams who make games that Nintendo publishes, we know projects for only 6 of them. 25 teams are either doing nothing or working on titles we don't know about.
