Whoa at the 360.

Seems like this was a very slow week. Awesome to see Mass Effect in the top 10 but at 18K I can tell it will drop hard.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I really hope Arc Rise Fantasia does better.

after the famitsu review no one could expect the game to sell when first party games like tact of magic sell 4k first week... xD

I think that overestimate's Famitsu's pull, and it's easier to attribute Kizuna's failure to:
- Not well advertised
- Deployed by a company that literally no longer exists and thus is almost certainly releasing this as a loss leader of sorts
- Famitsu review or no, looked like junk in basically all media released after the initial unveil
- In a dead market
- For a system that is having trouble selling software.
- Musou-type gameplay audience is obviously on literally any other platform (99 nights, actual musou games, gundam musou all elsewhere)

Hey look, some decent 1st day numbers as opposed to the slow couple weeks we've been on. Good to see a 100k+ seller again.

I assume this is a port of the PS2 port? Good thing they realized that PSP didn't have enough SRPGs, particularly ports!

Famitsu First Day Sales (05/28)

[NDS] Gyakuten Kenji (Capcom) - SE 118,000 (50%) / PE 1,500 (20%)

GS4 did 240k week one so GK is on par to be in the same range. Which is great, given that I really get the idea that this is a sort of hedged bet; if it had bombed, it would have been a one off experiment.

[PSP] Yuusha 30 (Marvelous Entertainment) - 13,000 (25%)

Not a great first day sellthrough, but actually would be MMV's second best first week on PSP.

Given the seemingly precipitous declines in gaming purchases in Japan, I would love to see some stats for their version of the App store.

Yeah, impressive first day sales for the Ace Attorney spinoff.
Yuusha 30 sells pretty much like I was expecting (~20k first week) and Dynasty Warriors Empires 6 first day on PS3 = Dynasty Warriors Empires 5 first week on PS2.

Does anyone remember Musou Orochi Z's opening day numbers for PS3? I think they were very similar to DWE6 on PS3.. if then they'll probably end up with similar LTDs at about 230,000.. Not bad, will keep a PS3 title in the top ten for two weeks possibly :lol

The next "visible" title for PS3 is Atelier Rorona in June I think.

They have settled around 4k. Last year and the year before wasn't it doing like 2k a week or less?

Why are people surprised at 360 numbers? They're pretty good all things considered. It was obviously going to drop, but at least it's not doing abysmal numbers like the previous years.

Less than 4k isn't abysmal numbers?

Really?

Not when you compare it to what it use to do, and compared to what the competition is doing. Baby steps and all.

4k in a shitty economy is better then 2k in a healthy economy. I'm not even saying it's good numbers, just questioning why people are surprised.

Is this some sort of sarcastic play on lines you don't like when PS3 enthusiasts say them?

Assuming you're serious, again, just like in the US, Xbox 360 is the only current-gen system that is priced lower than 12 months ago. A good enough reason for its year-over-year growth that will disappear as we pass September, if it even lasts that long. Barring massive third-party moneyhats to be revealed at E3, all cylinders have already been fired for the Xbox 360 in Japan. Between the lineup and the price, Microsoft will never have an easier sale than they had from Q4 '08 well into this year. And even so, it's sunken below the PS2 again. Where can this system possibly go from here?

We're talking about the 360 here, did you expect it to magically jump up to 10k range and stay there? Once again I'm not saying they're good, but it's not a surprise that it's dropping.

It is, but it's still pulling two or three thousend units more than it used to do months ago. And with the Wii and PS3 being as low as they are the 360 numbers don't look as horrible anymore.

Depends on your perspective. I think they're all doing pretty bad (some worse than others), for example.

Based on the latest Famitsu hardware numbers...
PSP comparisons: After 232 weeks, PSP is where PS2 was at 185.9 weeks (September 21, 2003), where DS was at 101.1 weeks (November 6, 2006), and where GBA was at 157.3 weeks (March 23, 2004).

X360 comparisons: After 180 weeks, X360 is where GCN was at 16.9 weeks (January 5, 2002), where PS3 was at 37.6 weeks (July 26, 2007), and where Wii was at 5.4 weeks (January 3, 2007).

PS3 comparisons: After 132 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 44.8 weeks (January 5, 2001), where PSP was at 67.7 weeks (March 24, 2006), where GCN was at 122.7 weeks (January 16, 2004), and where Wii was at 35.0 weeks (July 29, 2007).

Based on the latest Media Create hardware numbers...
DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 58.9 / 41.1 bring total shares to 68.3 / 31.7. If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 516.1 weeks (April 15, 2019).

X360 vs PS3: Weekly shares of 26.1 / 73.9 bring total shares to 24.5 / 75.5. If PS3 stopped selling and X360 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 553.0 weeks (December 29, 2019).

Week over week, things are pretty flat.

Wii: -64.1%

PS3: +28.3%
PSP: -44.0%
X360: +238.1%

Home hardware: -36.8%
Portable hardware: -25.1%
Sum of all hardware: -29.8%

Wii passes 8 million after 130 weeks.

Famitsu Software Stuff

RETURN OF THE EVERGREENS. New software isn't exactly lighting up the charts, so this chart is full of oldies. Some of them are always on the list, some come and go, but a few of these haven't been seen in a Top 30 for months. This week's list includes:

2005's Animal Crossing: Wild World (at 4,998,531)
2005's Mario Kart DS (first time since January)

2006's New Super Mario Bros.
2006's Wii Sports (first time since February)

2007's Wii Fit

2008's Monster Hunter Portable 2 G
2008's Mario Kart Wii
2008's Rhythm Tengoku Gold
2008's Pokémon Platinum
2008's Little Magician's Magic Adventure
2008's Animal Crossing: City Folk
2008's Taiko no Tatsujin Wii

The Bleach: Heat the Soul series has never been one of PSP's top sellers, but it has been prolific and pretty steady. Heat the Soul 6 (3521) looks to have the best first week in the series at 41K, but they've almost all started in the 35-40K range so it's not by much.

I've recently seen you cooked up some comparisons to PSX shipment numbers, due to lack of sales tracking reaching that far back, which I found pretty interesting. Any chance you could work that into (some of) these comparison lines?

I think the numbers show the state of the Japanese market very well. Wii having the highest drop yoy due to a very bad software landscape, but still highest selling due to being market leader, PS3 getting an uptick due to the recent AAA games, 360 getting a huge boost due to price drop + AAA titles. While the DS and PSP pummels everything to the ground. It's fair game here on out, the Japanese console market is there to be revived for anyone up the task. In the end us gamers win since everyone will have to work their butt off to get it poppin again.

MH3. Maybe SE will surprise us with FFXIII at E3/TGS? The market needs it right now.

There is an "in terms of" generator for shipments, but mixing up the two would be a bit of a pain.

Also unfortunately Nintendo is really the only one giving regional shipment data at present, so even using that to see how things compare as of the most recent quarter is pretty limited.

Wow, the Japanese market is such shit now, its so sad. Compare it to how everything is selling in the West, such a disappointment. Those sales over here would have analysts calling death to the industry. I wouldn't want to make a game to sell there unless its called Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, or any Mario Franchise. Damn!

That market's gonna crash soon...

iPhones aren't exactly flying off the shelves in Japan. Just one of my Japanese friends has an iPhone, whereas around 50% of my westerner (in Japan) friends do. So whilst it's a hit with the foreigners, it's not exciting the natives.
